- The Tigris river is said to have watered the biblical Garden of Eden and helped give birth to civilisation itself. But today it is dying. Human activity and climate change have choked its once mighty flow through Iraq. The country may be oil-rich but it is plagued by poverty after decades of war and by droughts and desertification.The Tigris, the lifeline connecting the storied cities of Mosul, Baghdad and Basra, has been choked by dams, most of them upstream in Turkey, and falling rainfall. An AFP video journalist travelled along the river's 1,500-kilometre (900-mile) course through Iraq, from the rugged Kurdish north to the Gulf in the south, to document the ecological disaster that is forcing people to change their ancient way of life.

This documentary really upset me. Two mighty rivers Tigris & Euphrates are drying up where once flourished two great ancient civilizations. These two rivers has a special place in the history. These are not just rivers but are pride & heritage of Iraq. I wish the glory of these two rivers is brought back by Iraqis through sound environment policies....

I don’t think it’s from climate change as much as poor water management. I used to do patrols near the Tigris and on the Tigris. Amazing how much pollution they dumped in it. It had some beautiful stretches. Then you would see pipes from a nearby factory dumping straight into it and the water would be a completely different color.
Turkey and Syria damming up the sources of the Tigris and Euphrates doesn’t help either
