Thank you for watching today's Vox Atlas! I wanted to leave a note about our process since so many of you have asked. First of all, yes, Atlas takes a TON of research and reporting. Thankfully I have a talented team of journalists beside me to make it all possible. The most important part of our process is finding the right story. Not every story can be a video and not every video can be a map-video. I'm always looking for two things in a story: 1) is there a specific, narrow story that I can map? 2) If so, can I use that story to give the viewer a wider understanding of a country or region? Finding those stories takes a lot of reading and talking to people who live and work in these places. Then we also need to find data to build our visualizations. That means mining tons of studies and reports for maps; but also charts and tables can we can turn into a map. If possible I'd like to learn about the Siberian Tundra in this style of video. It's a vast area that is hard to conceptualize without reference. I'm sure there is tons of juicy information in that region as well. Thanks for making this one!
Sadly I dont see any solution, Turkey and Syria wont stop their hidro electric plants, if Saddam were in power he wouldnt had let his neighbors built those dams.
when the traitor faizal joined the brits to defeat the ottomans we were in the same situation without oil the new formed turkish republic struggled to achieve something meanwhile they had lots of oil and money they didn`t share it with us , contrary we paid one of the highest prices for fuel despite being neighbours with them , they cut us off from the oil fields , the oil was theirs and the water is ours now .

Wow, that's sad to hear as an American we learned so much about these two Rivers in school such an amazing part of history. A shame what's happening to them. So many world leaders but no one wants to help. I pray you guys get the help you deserve 🙏❤️

No clean water, no electricity (blackouts happen 4+ times a day and most of the electricity comes from private generators), No reliable internet structure, no road maintenance, no good hospitals, and most (not all) of iraqis want to get out of the country. truly sad. Iraq used chemical weapons in Iran-Iraq War in the 80's. They had a nuclear program too. However, after the first Gulf War both were abolished with the help of international community and UN Special Commission carried out regular inspections. What happened in 2001 and after that is a different story. A story indeed, because the weapons of mass destruction only existed in the minds of George W Bush and US military command. 🙄

As a history student it kind of hits hard. We read about Euphrates and Tigris and how because of them mesopotamia flourished- the first urbanised settlement. Now it is breaking down. It is like cutting an entire country of its heartbeat

Let me explain why, originally Arabs were to either divide land amongst themselves ( this would have allowed the Kurds to be independent) or become one huge country by a deal with the British, but they were working in a secret deal with France to split the region up and under their control. Love your idealism ... Unfortunately the damage would take decades to reverse, you could teach about not littering but when there's no garbage pickup or recycling and people are trying to survive issues like this become that much more difficult to take on

I´m from Iraq, seeing this truly breaks my heart, and what breaks my heart even more, is that all this was happened because of something that never even existed in the first place (weapons of mass destruction).
The weapons of mass destruction did exist in Iraqs past, and were used against Iranians (Iran-Iraq war) and Kurds (al-Anfal campaign) but Saddam did destroy all of them as agreed with the UN. It’s sad how a country where history of Hanging Garden of Babylon and where one of first civilization roots was formed suffers with basic amenities issues like water. I come from a country blessed with so plentiful of water that we don’t really think or appreciate it. My best wishes for people of Iraq, hope you will build your country and continue to be strong heart in the process. It pains me to watch this, I can’t imagine how anyone born or descended from Iraq would feel.
As an Iraqi who lives in Baghdad It saddens me to see foreigners caring about the country more than it's own government Corruption is at an all time high, the education system is HORRIBLE I had the luck of studying for 8 years in Jordan and when I cam back I saw how our education system is a huge failure amongst many failures like the water and electricity crisis. For instance schools in summer where the temperature reaches 45°C and sometimes 50°C only use ceiling fans Sometimes me and my friends would leave school just so we could go home and cool off, and we come back and find we don't even have electricity. The US invasion promised to give us democracy instead it only brought corruption. I write this as I'm having final unified exams that measure how much you can stuff information in your head, plus we must write Exactly what is written in the book word by word so we can get a good grade. Plus going to college really doesn't matter, in the end you'll work as taxi driver. Investment in Iraq is impossible do to the lack of infrastructure and safety so we don't have a private sector, you either get a job at the government or you work as taxi driver for the rest of your miserable life. Plus it's a corrupt system so if you want to work for the government you need to pay a considerable amount of money.
May Allah SWT make it easy for you my brother. May He SWT grant you with ease and aafiyah. May this suffering of the people of Iraq be a source of reward in the Aakhirah. Aameen 🤲🏼 ya Rabbal Aalemeen 💚

it's not only cruel, it's a war crime. Directing attacks against civilians or infrastructure vital to survival is a war crime.

Iraq used chemical weapons in Iran-Iraq War in the 80's. They had a nuclear program too. However, after the first Gulf War both were abolished with the help of international community and UN Special Commission carried out regular inspections.
What happened in 2001 and after that is a different story. A story indeed, because the weapons of mass destruction only existed in the minds of George W Bush and US military command. 🙄

Let me explain why, originally Arabs were to either divide land amongst themselves ( this would have allowed the Kurds to be independent) or become one huge country by a deal with the British, but they were working in a secret deal with France to split the region up and under their control. What really gives me hope is that this problem can be controlled, if Iraq gets a leader that can negotiate with the other countries and to stop the people from littering. I thought this would be a natural problem where the lakes are drying up which is probably the worst case scenario

Love your idealism ... Unfortunately the damage would take decades to reverse, you could teach about not littering but when there's no garbage pickup or recycling and people are trying to survive issues like this become that much more difficult to take on

I´m from Iraq, seeing this truly breaks my heart, and what breaks my heart even more, is that all this was happened because of something that never even existed in the first place (weapons of mass destruction).
The weapons of mass destruction did exist in Iraqs past, and were used against Iranians (Iran-Iraq war) and Kurds (al-Anfal campaign) but Saddam did destroy all of them as agreed with the UN. The neocon warmongers stance was that Saddam hid some of the WMD. That claim was false and a pretext for war.

Finally a video that recognise the strategic importance of river sources. This is precisely why China want strong control over Tibet, because Majority of China, India and Southeast Asian countries major rivers begin in the Tibetan Plateau.

It saddens me to see foreigners caring about the country more than it's own government
Corruption is at an all time high, the education system is HORRIBLE
I had the luck of studying for 8 years in Jordan and when I cam back I saw how our education system is a huge failure amongst many failures like the water and electricity crisis.
For instance schools in summer where the temperature reaches 45°C and sometimes 50°C only use ceiling fans
Sometimes me and my friends would leave school just so we could go home and cool off, and we come back and find we don't even have electricity.
The US invasion promised to give us democracy instead it only brought corruption.
I write this as I'm having final unified exams that measure how much you can stuff information in your head, plus we must write Exactly what is written in the book word by word so we can get a good grade.
Plus going to college really doesn't matter, in the end you'll work as taxi driver.
Investment in Iraq is impossible do to the lack of infrastructure and safety so we don't have a private sector, you either get a job at the government or you work as taxi driver for the rest of your miserable life.
Plus it's a corrupt system so if you want to work for the government you need to pay a considerable amount of money.
May Allah SWT make it easy for you my brother. May He SWT grant you with ease and aafiyah. May this suffering of the people of Iraq be a source of reward in the Aakhirah. Aameen 🤲🏼 ya Rabbal Aalemeen 💚
