India's Water Revolution #1: Solving the Crisis in 45 days with the Paani Foundation

- Permaculture instructor Andrew Millison journeys to India to film the epic work of the Paani Foundation’s Water Cup Competition. We tour the village of Garavadi, in Maharashtra, who competed in the 2019 competition to install the most amount of water harvesting structures in a 45 day period. Guided by Paani Foundation’s chief advisor, Dr. Avinash Pol, we visit the work and see the effects of a watershed-scale groundwater restoration project that has dramatically improved the lives, economy, ecology and stability of this village, all in 45 days!

Wow. I know this works. But to have a competition between villages... Brilliant idea. There are no "losers" in that competition. Yes, some villages do better than others, but ALL who participate are improving their villages and lives. Eager to see the next episode. Subscribed.

ANDREW - let's do something like this for Africa! Otherwise, they will starve in the wake of this locust plague (and years of repeated floods & droughts). I'm working with farmers in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, and the DRC. Let me know if you would be interested in a project on the African continent.
DJ Nicke - Yes, we need this type of massive restoration everywhere! I think one of the keys to the widespread participation in this project is that it was started by Aamir Khan, who is a household name in India, and that there were financial backers for the prize money. I wonder if there is a similar charismatic figure in Africa who would take to the idea of a contest?

India since ancient time was fertile , with great river , lakes and ponds ...evrey ancient temple had pond attached to it was all interconnected to wells local water body you can still see the reminiscent in south india even in the ancient ruins of 7 cent AD Katas raj temple in Pakistan ..... organic farming etc ( the indore model which britishers introduced to west afer studying indian sate indore) and many crops fruits , vegetables were cultivated and india was able to support large population thoughout all period of history

Maybe if we had more "competitions" in the U.S., we could get forests planted, crops harvested, and who knows what else? We could do teams of Democrats and Republicans. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

You know what i agree. Who watches Olympics anymore. They're smug and useless creating insurmountable debt for the host. This fills my soul with joy. After such a horrible beginning to 2020, it is so wonderful to watch how people, when they put their minds to it, can accomplish wondrous things. Congratulations to everyone involved in these projects.
Yes these are Serious Considerations to apply and engineer as Wildlife, Stock and People all need access to Potable Water and serious commitments to Infrastructure and Form could devise Appropriate Technological Standards to augment Emergency Storage Facilities or Collectors to use later when local conditions may be water deprived or in drought to save impacts on Freshwater Resources in those Areas as needed. Monsoon or wet season Storage could provide year round Potable Water Availability for Best Use Purposes of Community.

Our village in Raigad district ,Taluka - Mangoan, Palasgoan( Budruk). Approx from Jan to June their is No water ,we have to depend on tankar . Pipe line is their but after 3to 4 days or after the gap of one week water in pape line for 1-2 hour water only .please help our 6 villages

What is really amazing,is that this type of system has been known for at least 40 years, if not longer. Yet it took a famous actor to actually convince his people to start to implement this just 6 years ago.
And in the U.S. we buy bottled water taken from small towns and government land, and are creating water shortages because we don't care for the land. Sad. At least India did something about it.

These has been known since centuries and not 40 years.What has been attempted is a simple exercise to arrest rain water at different stages.But it has its limitations.There is too much evaporation.There is no attempt to recharge deep aquifers
It takes a leader or authority or some kind of a respected figure to unite people and bring them together for any cause.

I would like to add a note, if you don't mind, these competitions has percolated much talked about environmental issues to those villagers who were less fortunate to attend any schools. They are now aware and awakened. And making right decisions for themselves and community.
It has also resolved old political feuds and brought people together to fight drought.

In my comment i was referring to certain videos where the older folks who didn't get an opportunity to attend any institutional schooling . Esp the video of an old lady, who never stepped out of her village nor attended a school, this competition opened her eyes to the perils of environment and effects.
Maharashtra has got naxal problem too. Even though iam from mumbai, i believe that they should give vidarbha a new state from maharashtra as vidarbha deserves its own state. Nobody sees vidarbhas problem.
India’s efforts in building a better present and future is absolutely inspiring.
You go slightly to the west of Satara and you'll reach the Sahyadri mountains which receive 2000-5000 mm rain per year. These mountains run along the entire western coast of Maharashtra and continue until Kerala. Very different pictures on both sides of the mountain. To its west, you can grow rice (very water hungry crop) on just rainfall and no separate irrigation. To the east it is mostly semi-arid and arid.
We travelled from Satara West over the mountains to Ganpatipol near Ratnagiri, so I went over the terrain that you are talking about. My favorite part are the Mango forests on the western slopes!
@@amillison I think you are talking about Ganpatipulé. That's a very popular place because of the temple.
Sahyadris are very very rich in biodiversity and one of my favourite places on earth. They are also highly underrated, not many people know or appreciate them enough.

@@nirranjprabhu Yes. They also give rise to the short, fast flowing rivers on this side. All of Mumbai's 6 or 7 water source lakes (except Powai and Vihar) are fed by rivers that originate from the Western Ghats.

paani foundation has changed the destiny of thousands of villages and lakhs of villagers....I have been a regular follower of it and went for Maha shramdaan every year on 1st May. sadly this year there wont by water cup due to Covid-19

the total prize money is around 10 cr for the villagers where as first prize is 50 lacs

You need to cover what the Govt of Gujarat has done in the last 15 years and how it transformed an arid state with the highest agriculture growth rates in India. Now the state of Andra pradesh has also started the worlds largest drip irrigation project in the world.

I'm so glad more people are noticing the amazing work done by the Paani Foundation. I held a presentation at my university in Austria last year about their methods to manage the watertable, just based on the english content they share on youtube and their website. They work with such intelligence and neverending vigor. It's really inspiring, and with the effects of climate change starting to severely affect our rainfall here in Europe too, the methods they are developing will sooner or later become interesting even to European countries, where water is currently still actively drained off the land because of outdated 19th-century ideas of land development.

India bands together and solves the problem of their arid regions becoming worse. In America, everybody just cries that its because of climate change and throws their arms up in the air. I wish some of these people crying about climate change and calling for a carbon tax had the motivation and ambition to make the situation better like these guys. I would volunteer for a project like this in the Mojave desert-- I live here. Something like this could help end the 'megadrought' taking place here.

Aaron- I believe, we in United States have learned to expect.. to rely on our governments for solutions. while in India due to various reasons people believe in digging within themselves for a solution. And I can say this bcoz i happened to live some part of my life there, I would expect the system to work for me, whereas the locals had more individualistic approach.

That's an ingenious idea for large scale permaculture reform. By aligning competitions with the different stages it is continuously evolving. Best of all literally EVERYONE WINS. Their efforts will directly improve their lives, not someone else's 100 miles away. I hope the different stage competitions continue annually so more can take part and improve their communities for themselves. #paanifoundation

The Video is remarkable Andrew, this brings back life to the places of the Hindus, and all the places where the water is derived, aside from cleaning of the garbage bay, used to be a garbage shore, now it is clean. Continue to be as determined and resourceful of the things that was entrusted.

I love this series of documentaries, thank you. What an inspiring project and what inspiring and enlightened communities! Listening to Dr Pol's wonderful explanations and seeing the pride of the people in what they have accomplished is truly uplifting. A remarkable example of people voluntarily coming together to work towards the common good. Lived in Inidai for well over year. Truly hardworking , very civilized people, especially in the poorest villages. They were truly subsistence farmers, and lived a medieval life, but culd provide if given water

This is really a great initiative, and it’s great that it was brought to life by an Indian celebrity, hopefully it’ll inspire more Indian celebrities to get involved in similar projects. In the video you mention they practice rotational grazing, have they been exposed to the work of Dr Allan Savory who developed a system of holistic management which include a continuous adaptive grazing technique. If they haven’t, I would strongly urge you to look at the work of the Savory Institute. Keep up the great work with your videos, we need more example of communities working collaboratively to build solutions to their joint problems.

You can automate the process of making CCT and check dams, enabling you to make them at greater speed and make Germany greener. Germany has to be green, it has all the four letters of the word "green".
