So, here's one of the horror stories I heard. My friend Dr B wanted to play this game with me, he said he really liked it. So I hoped he would help teach me. Turns out, he hasn't played it since 1999 or so when he lived in Germany. And the reason he hadn't played it in 20 years was that the last time they played, one of the guys playing lost his mind and flipped the table and that gaming group imploded afterwards. Dr B emigrated to Aotearoa not long after. So I asked him
"Wait, did you emigrate because your gaming group exploded because of this game?"
"Well, yes......................... but I do want to play it again, you all seem much nicer"
This is both lovely and scary as hell.
Some games require time and replays to appreciate. This game took me 16 years. Went from an average game to a top 10 and now I have this new addition in shrinkwrap. Just. In. Case.
One special thing about the game...your final score is the lowest among all four color scores, so it's easy to think someone else is running away with the game through aggressive behavior only to find they've neglected one color.
Unless the rules have changed, your scoring for revolts/internal conflicts is incorrect. Upon resolution, you only score 1 red point (nothing for the leader removed).
An attribute I often look at in a game is the spite level. This basically reserves it at one end for my kids or at the extreme end, my work mates.
Nice review as always!
This is a blast from the past haven't played it in ages but not for any exciting reasons
The win condition is a bit more complex than "the person with the most VP wins."
From the rulebook: "Each player determines in which sphere (red, blue, black or green) they possess the fewest number of victory points, with each player freely allocating his treasures to any sphere(s)... The player whose lowest sphere has the highest number of victory points is the winner."
So a savvy player will ensure that they collect red, green, blue, and black VPs in fairly even amounts because your big pile of 30 red VPs means sweet FA if you only have 2 blue VPs.
Yep, i knew that and just blew past it in the script. An error by omission.
@@3MBG You still got a darn good tutorial done in about 3 minutes. Better than I've done explaining just the concept!
This is one game where your advice on apps would have come in handy. I overplayed the app and now don't jump to play it like I would otherwise.
Very good game though!
Did not know it had an app. That would help with the table flipping though :)
I played this once, a long time ago. I don't remember where or under what circumstances. I do remember I liked it, and do want to try it again. Of course, that may be influenced by the fact that I somehow won, despite not having a clue.
Hahahaha, so true.
I've done that in the past as well with games.
I just finally snagged a copy of this... I've been on a classics kick picking up this, Ra, Samurai, Shogun and Tikal. We're playing this tomorrow literally for the first time.
How did it go? Its a crazy cut throat game right :)
@@3MBG I didn't get it to the table. we had 5 people. I'll let you know after my wednesday gaming evening.
So?
@@UnimatrixOne Oh, it's bloody brilliant. I suck at it completely. Playing it now on BGA semi-regularly and I can say that it is one of Knizia's best games.
@@ThomasLuongo 👍😄
had this for ages but i still struggle visualising it when i'm 4 different colours (original version with less fancy tiles)
You didn’t mention the game’s unique end game scoring!
True story. I accidentally left out a line in the script when voice recording this time. And as the video ended up being nearly 4 minutes already, and I didn't catch it until i was done, i didn't go back. My mistake.
I do have a question about the rule in conflicts. In minute 2:00 its explain that the winner takes a red token plus a black token for the líder its remove. However, i think that rules says that you only recive red token in case of revolt.... Is It a change of new edition?
That might be an error.
Aaaa herr Knizia... Haven't played this one since no one in my gaming group has it... But you cannot go wrong with Knizia... 🤭🤭
Interestingly, I couldn't follow the play a turn at all on this video. It looks interesting, I get that you play tiles, but the leaders and interactions totally overwhelmed me.
Yeah, some games could do with a few more minutes and some slowing down
Yeah, I think what it really needed early on was "note that each player has one leader of each colour. Identifying which player owns a leader is done by its shape, and which player owns a set of tiles is done by which leader is adjacent"
Assuming that's how it works, I couldn't follow it either
Agreed, there are other channels on UA-cam that do a more comprehensive walkthrough of how to play. I watch videos on this channel to get the overall gist of a game's mechanics, theme, and art- without having to devote 20 minutes of rules to do so.
How’s this compare to yellow and Yangtze?
I have not played. But people I know who have played both prefer Y&Y and say its a lot less likely to cause table flips.
Which video game is the music from again?
its not, its from here. the place i get all my royalty free music. It may also have been in a game as well. incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3952-killers/
Dang, I'm sure I know it from a game! But thanks for the link!
I know it! It's from the timer app of the board game Time Arena! Check it out, it's fun!
Heh, will do. It's a neat piece of music, and well, it's free and I am so so so so so cheap :)
🤣
I love your channel, but I'm not a huge fan of tile placement games
