I think you missed a chance to pick out the difference between a lean out forehand and a normal upshot forehand. Because usually it's a different angle and you don't have the luxury of that same arm movement. Also noting that you may use a sidearm for when the wind is coming from a different angle so the sidearm produces less glide and therefore less marginal error. Love the videos
Loved that intro. I miss ultimate. I was the captain of my high school team in my glory days. I've never been better at any sport. (Definitely including DG)
The way to becoming good at forearms is to play rounds only throwing forehands, including putting. Start with a shot course. Keep at it until decent. Now, whenever I play a course for practice, I have two identical sets of discs. I compete forehand guy vs backhand guy. Initially, backhand guy won by about 3 strokes on a 3000 foot course. After about 25 rounds, forehand guy caught up. I now do this competition on long courses and both are equal. Drastically improved my overall game, in ways I hadn't imagined when I began.
Robbie I love the Quack shirt. Would love to rep it on the courses and just cause I love the look, just to have it. But alas, I am a bigger guy wearing a 5x and your shirt only goes up to 3x. Quietly crying inside. Lol I have learned so much from you and Mike and have improved my game. This video is just another helping tip. I actually adjusted my forehand upshot to the form Mike was showing before watching this video. Just need to adjust the wrist above the elbow a little more. But I am here to say this technique works and has helped my middle game a lot. Keep up the awesome work, and I really don’t think you did that bad for your first tournament. Keep on being awesome Robbie!
Cool video! I can't help but chuckle a little bit as this video is kinda like "how to not throw as far, smoothly". I think that's the opposite of most disc golf videos, where it's all about power and accuracy under power. Thanks for putting this together!
Luckily, I recently just realized this finger lag Michael Strauss mentioned, but im glad he mentioned it. To me it felt more like a push of sorts. Also, gonna have to add a quack shirt to my list of things to get
adding a small flick forehand opened up many new lines/opportunities for upshots. One thing I'd add is to use a disc leaning more stable. You want to control the miss more on an upshot than a full shot. Aim to land on the side that will finish toward the basket, similar to a BH upshot. As you get better and maybe into more longer shots(as your forearm develops), then add less stable discs.
I love watching your videos! They have completely changed my game and even my outlook on the sport. Every time I play, I literally "quack" on a hit basket or tree!
I'd be interested in seeing a video showing all the shots that are no problem if you come from an ultimate background, and how they aren't mutually exclusive. Seems like it's a lot of up-shots around obstacles, as that's like being marked and throwing to a cutter where you have to shape it outside-in or inside-out, the bread and butter for handlers! But we talk about it like it's this big disadvantage. I was out with a buddy a few weeks back. His first round playing disc golf, and he struggled. But he's a really, really good club ultimate player, and it showed when he needed to throw a big anny forehand from the trees and parked it. Feels like we should be calling it out more as our secret sauce in lots of realistic situations, even if we're still reprogramming our form on drives. I live in a Frisbee-obsessed city - rec, college, club. Our pro team draws hundreds fans to home games. We also have many excellent disc golf courses in and around town, and will host the women's USGDC next year. But I'm still surprised how few of our thousands of ultimate players have made the jump to disc golf, and many worry that they'll even ruin their ultimate form and actively avoid it. Crazy!
@@michaelstrauss2312 Sorry for the super late response. I edited my initial post and decided to just stick with a good old "thank you". I'll get my forehand figured out some day but this wasn't the time or place to ask that question.
Bang on with learning on the Makani, that's what did it for me! Was away for the weekend and had that lone disc in my trunk. Just kinda shot it at nothing for a while and at one point it just clicked!
Hey man, just got into this sport in May and I'm loving it and I appreciate all the work you put into this channel. I can't pinpoint any one thing but just watching your content gives me so much to think about and helps me tune my game. Keep up the good work.
Hey dude, it was cool seeing you in ATX. I said, “Good Shit” Hahaha. Even though you may have been referring to the NADGT Championships as your last bad tourney, I hope you still had fun out there! Thanks for all your content :)
I really like using a disc with very little glide (ie Gator3) and using about as much power as I would need to throw a baseball to the basket. This seems to keep me fairly consistent- hope this helps someone!
Have loved this series! Mike Strauss is amazing! His instruction on changing grip and arm angle for up shots has changed my game! Thank you!!! Robbie, you're pretty cool too. ;-)
Robbie is damn cool!😎 But seriously… Thanks for the kind words… And crazy happy that is already affected your game in such a positive manner. Like I’ve said many times before… This is a game for a lifetime… And if we can share and pay it forward… That’s what it’s all about!
Love that mindset of missing long. I got an elevation interceptor and koi for that reason but I’m more confident in my putting now that I’ve moved to more traditional discs that could go long
Yes. It is exactly the same. When I’m giving lessons/coaching… There are many points in the overall bio mechanics that I talk about “wrist integrity”… And here it is showing up again.
You should find some places in Canada to partner with. Would love to support but by the time shipping and exchange come into play it all gets a little pricey.
I have upshots soooo down side arm, zone/tactic, logic for straight shots, but as soon as I put effort into it like a 270ft tee shot I lose all side arm skill, literally anything above 4 speed I cant throw it just wobbles out of my hand and usually turns over cause its so bad. But I have such a good approach with my side arm its frustrating.
Yes… They stay fully extended… But the feeling that I described in the video is this… Put your finger out like you’re pretending to be pointing a gun… Which is the same grip I’m using on the forehand… And with your other hand press the bottom front part of the middle finger back towards the thumb so you feel the tension in the webbing between your ring finger and your middle finger. That is the sensation when you throw the Forehand forward and the lag is created. That is why it’s called “the tendon bounce“ that’s slings the desk forward and rules it off the front edge of the middle finger. Let us know if this helps. If you have any further questions… Reach out to me on my Instagram channel with a message… And we can set up a quick phone call.
Not Robbie, but the 3 implies +1 speed to the original version, sometimes -1 glide, and a flat top. I think the flat top is the biggest change in most of the molds and that is what causes the speed and glide change. For example, I have two Leo3s that are board flat but otherwise feel the exact same as a regular Leo. For me, one of the big advantages to the 3 line of discs is somewhat removing the variation that comes with a more domed disc. Two discs that I can think of that might as well have a 3 variation are the firebird and KC roc. A lot of players will specifically seek out flat firebirds and KC rocs to the point where some retailers put them on separate product pages. This could be helped if Innova chose to put a 3 on all the flat KCs and flat Firebirds. Sorry for the long winded response but that’s my understanding.
As usual, awesome video. Any discount on tee shirts for Patreon members? Please move my name up to Ace Runs Only. What is a good disc from Trilogy for these upshots? I am using Maidens and Pures right now.
I dont think beginners should go past the basket with the hope of it going in. Beginners are inconsistent. One out of 5 shots dont go well, as if possessed by some demon. My advice is park it. Drop in a stress-free putt. If your odds of sinking it are low, then there is a higher chance that you will throw it too something, too high and it drifts too far away, too long, too low and into the ground, too late or too early of a release. Learn to park it, consistently. That skill releases pressure and avoids the self-doubt and negative self-talk that comes from missing a long putt that you shouldn't have created in the first place. Let the other players screw up by going for baskets they have little chance of making. Go for it with upshots after you develop good touch, consistency, and a killer putting stroke.
Michael… I’m going to have to graciously and respectfully disagree. You said it yourself… Beginners cannot throw consistent shots… So telling them to park it under the basket would take consistency and control. If they could do that… They might as well have the disc leave the hand about 2 to 3 feet higher and give it a chance. When I’m teaching beginners… I wanna instill confidence along with the proper mechanics. I have never said that they should try to throw it in… what I did say is to learn the shot that gives it a chance to go in. Lay- ups don’t go in. When you have the built-in confidence in the mechanics… The confidence in the shot selection coat tails. Learning to be aggressive… With calm assertiveness… Allows you to open up your game.

Quick question first… Are the pads of your middle finger and index finger completely on the flight plate or completely and the rim?

What discs do you recommend for throwing the Hyzer flip forehand?
Rob and Mike, do your fingers remain fully extended the entire time or do you curl them to enhance spin?
Yes… They stay fully extended… But the feeling that I described in the video is this… Put your finger out like you’re pretending to be pointing a gun… Which is the same grip I’m using on the forehand… And with your other hand press the bottom front part of the middle finger back towards the thumb so you feel the tension in the webbing between your ring finger and your middle finger.
