Can I make a suggestion that most U-Toob videos overlook...
Are you aiming to be the world's best disc golfer (or at lest right up there with them)..
Or do you want to hang with your mates, not look bad.. and maybe even make them look bad once in a while...
If the next Simon/Gannon was once known by the nickname dragonslayerdeko2703 (uhhh I take it that's not your actual name... or have I just offended you and your 80's DND playing parents)... then I guess ignore me from this point (I'm used to it)...
If, on the other hand you might try a suggestion from a 50+yo 850 rated 100m (330ft) max thrower that's fitting in comfortably as a slightly above local average...
      Lessee...
1st I'm going to make some assumptions...
You throw Righthanded Backhanded (most are right handed and your watching a backhand throwing video.
You throw your discs up in the air, they stall and go left (you can swap left for right from here if your a lefty.. I'm semi ambidextrous myself but RH Disc golf, RHBH dominant)
If your disc doesn't stall it just yeets off to the left meaning you almost always end up on the left side of the field.
This is basically the way all disc golfers start when they pick up a disc and get no formal training... BUT.. YouGoob videos formal training is almost all 'And then you'll be throwing 500ft"
      so...
Try this... STAND STILL.. After 3 years I'm finally working on this and can throw 300ft+ and often more accurately BUT with other factors...
STOP THROWING HYZER... Stand still, Throw Flat... Stand up straight !
Stop throwing hard... throw flat... SLOWLY..
Don't reach back into another time zone
so lets see if we can put that into a step by step...
1st look for a "neutral" disc... something with the last 2 numbers small and mirrored.. maybe the 2n'd to last a little bigger...
So a Crave or better yet A Leopard (Every good player probably has an old Leopard you can borrow.
Stand on the tee with your back ever so slightly facing the basket. and STAND UP STRAIGHT!
Have enough gap between your legs that someone behind you laying on the ground can see the basket through your legs (lets not questioning why someone is back there... ignore them)
hold your forearm across in front of you level (get that elbow up.. think the chicken dance...like your about to elbow me in the head for getting you to do this)
Now just practice (without moving your feet) turning away from the basket and push the disc in-line, away from the basket... not to far.. just slow...
pull that disc back to your chest, turn a bit toward the basket and pull the disc out to a straight arm at the basket... BUT keep the disc in a straight line to the basket..
The result is an action a bit like your trying to cut your head off with the disc. Elbow always at the same height as the disc. The disc always flat with the ground.
Note as you turn and pull the disc past your chest (it should almost hit your throwing arm shoulder mid way, that the last part of the travel has your arm go from fully bent (keep that dang elbow up... CHICKEN WING... CHICKEN WING!!!!) to fully straight basically pointing level at the basket...
You can almost practice this, no disc, both elbows up. sway back and forth at the hips and let your arms flail out and back as you turn left & right (Hey your practicing a lefty throw now).
I forgot to say... LOOK STRAIGHT AHEAD.. (so perpendicular to the target) ... You know where the basket is so DON'T LOOK AT IT.. EVER (Well once the disc is loose you might want to see where it went....
So sick of feeling like a washing machine now... OK... Something you need to note that your washing machine does... that YOU MUST DO TOO...
When agitating... your washing machine (ok assuming a top loader too.. .bare with me)...
When agitating.. Your washing machine doesn't just hit 100mph instantly, stop dead and hit 100mph in the other direction...
It slowly accelerates to the peak then slows down, and slowly accelerates the other way... (OMG if you get that right you'll be so much better than me. I still accelerate way to soon.
SO... do your washing machine dance.. I said GET THOSE ELBOWS UP!!!
Slow until the leading arm hand nearly hits your shoulder, THEN put a bit of speed into it and once your arm ends up straight, slow down, then back the other way...
      Rinse/Repeat...
So now your a washing machine with a quicker bit in the middle.. with flailing arms... but it should be fairly smooth (like your washing machine on agitate, no sudden stop/starts or those flappy paddle bits in the center will get ripped off by your jeans... uhh sorry, getting a bit far into that washing machine analogy...
SO... Now you have that level arm washing machine thing going for you... Grab a disc...
You can look up 'Power Grip"...
Disc hard down on your pointing fingers middle joint, top of the disc hard up under the palm of your thumb (Life line if your into that)...
but don't grip it with all your strength... actually just grip really hard with your little finger, your hand will do the rest...
do a few agitate cycles with the disc...
      Almost there....
Ever got a towel and flicked someone in the butt with it... Think about that... Familiar?... Reaching back... Hand comes into the shoulder then an explosion as your hand travels straight at that butt till the arm is straight.. towel does the rest...
so that same action.. but your flicking that basket in the back of the head... did I mention keeping your elbow UP... arm level.. ok you don't need to whip your hand back like you do trying to leave a blood blister on your mates glutes... but when you finally want to throw that disc... that's the sort of acceleration...
BUT... Your not going to go that hard... your doing that washing machine agitate speed... so maybe back off the grip just a little and almost just keep your little finger holding the disc at the end of your straight arm and hopefully it will say enough and pull out... FLAT because you kept your elbow up, your back straight, you didn't look at the target (yet).
AND you pulled it, accelerating SLOWLY up to your chest and only then give it a bit more huff...
Now... When doing all that Washing machine... did you notice something with your flailing arms.... they were "Flailing"... in fact yo fast enough and they were Towel whipping fast... Yet you weren't actually pulling your arms AT ALL... you were just turning your shoulders and your arms were just along for the ride.....
get all that right... and you're throw a disc only head height off the ground... flat... and maybe 10 ft (because that's a lot to take in...) but this time you remembered not to look at the basket... and it goes 200ft dead straight....
      now play with that.
Phew... Your still here... Ok, now count all the times I used the Period and you'll discover I just wasted another 5 minutes you could have spent practicing the washing machine...
oh... and GET THAT ELBOW UP!

I have the same problem currently and didnt realize it until taking videos. Which only started because ive been trying to start arming the disc more and not opening up. This video even more convinced me of my decision to get a tech disc and net for Christmas. At this point I have a lot of the knowledge of how to fix but having data and a way to practice well everyday.

I changed my nose angle by holding the disc where the stamp is pointed at my chest and pulling through and turning my wrist to what angle I want and I naturally throw nose down. Very consistently too. It changed everything for me

this is turning the key as he mentioned. 🙂 I generated horrible wobble with this personally, not saying its wrong just that you need to really practice it go figure out how far to let the disc face you and when to turn it and how fast to turn it to hit that perfect moment before release ect. Just hints for anyone who tries this.

this is the video I have been looking for. I have struggled with nose angle for a while and just recently have found a solution but havn't quite grasped the full concept to make it work every time. It started out with the turn the key concept and a bit of mixing in with that much lower reach back. I have since dialed it back and it seemed to be working, but this video really solidifies what I was working towards and helps me understand the importance of launch angle. Thanks Robbie!

Thank you Robbie C. Ezra still pours the coffee; Works for him, if it works for you too; This comment isn't for you; It's a critique of pouring the coffee.
To me; I have 3 critiques with pouring the coffee
    1) Unlike darts where all the pros are locking the wrist; It's a firm fundamental in darts, In disc golf Arm speed and despite you're not engaging an active wrist like with that forehand in the backhand that tension is a brake. I believe it reduces distance potential
    2) Happens at peak reach back. It's its own process to shoe horn into your Backhand timing at a crucial moment.
    3) Thanks to Robbie C's insight (get well by the way). You have an option with launch angle and a brilliant drill to utilize and benefit.

positive launch angle and negative nose angle is super difficult. I achieve it on occasion but not consistently. Launch angle goes back to that "invisible window" in the flight path that we want to hit in order to achieve the flight intended. Not getting their by positive nose angle but by the launch angle. Another way to think about this is what height in the apex of the flight do I need to achieve in order to reach the distance required for this shot? Calvin H can throw a 450ft shot 5ft off the ground. Most of us cannot. Few of us can throw 300ft with the disc 5ft off the ground. So hitting that launch angle consistently with power helps us to achieve the outcome desired.

Thanks for the video Robbie I’ll I have to try this. I purchased a TechDisc about three weeks ago for the sole purpose of trying to correct nose angle and launch angle. I watched a lot of videos from overthrow and how Josh was working with a man inside using the TechDisc and trying to get him to throw the nose angle down at the same time serving the pizza with a positive launch angle. I thought with the TechDisc I could fix this pretty easily, but it has been very frustrating. Also switched from starting off I don’t know the term but pouring the tea to now using the suitcase back reach and then turning the key to get my nose angle. I have found it almost impossible to get a negative nose angle and a positive launch angle on any consistent basis. . I also seem to not be able to throw anything flat unless I really stand up straight otherwise everything’s on a hyzer. This disc golf stuff is hard. 😂😂😂. Oh, by the way, you totally lost me when you got to playing in the dirt. 😂

  • @overfiend75

This is interesting; sort of the inverse of the classic drill where you teach yourself nose angle by deliberately throwing the disc into the ground right in front of you, and then gradually pushing the distance out until you are trying to 'hit the ground' at 350.'
An issue this raises for me, though, is that when I aim at a spot on my net my tendency to turn into the shot prematurely is exacerbated; trying to see if I'm hitting the target, I throw and turn my head and shoulders too early. I don't recall you saying this explicitly, but recording this kind of drill from behind is useful for people like me who are trying to reinforce patience in the throw.

Great video Robbie!!. You needed to give the theory so that we can imagine what the practical looks like. I've watched hundreds of videos where they don't go through this twin process of launch vs nose angle. You also described exactly, two common traits to my game. First, I don't get the expected flight with under stable discs, and second, the same disc sometimes has two very different flight paths. Thanks for taking grief from others so that I get the benefit of learning this subject!! By the way, you can figure out the proper height for 10 degrees, and that is 17" rise for 8 feet distance on a level field.

  • @benjaminhutchings5721
    @benjaminhutchings5721 18 днів тому

Thank you for this video! I truly think launch angle is my big rock issue keeping me from consistency and causing me to throw nose up way too much. I can throw 275' - 300' pretty consistently, but only get +300' on grip locks and in ideal wind conditions/downhill drives. I have been trying for so long to throw the disc "down" and I am sure that my instinct to try to counter a downward throw with an equally "up" recovery angle is causing me to "swoosh" and is the issue. I know I have a slower arm speed and I feel that is why I get better results with fairway drivers, but I am wondering now if I could fix this launch angle if I could get better results with distance drivers too, and not just have them hyzer crash at the same distance I can comfortably drive fairway drivers. I have been getting more positive results with the "winning the arm wrestle" and "throwing the elbow" from your previous videos. Thanks again!

Does all of what you were talking/showing also work for Forehand as all you have been showing is Backhand, i have a better Forehand as aposed to my Backhand & the fact that my throwing hand shoulder is not at all good, (My RH shoulder got damaged mant years ago) hencr why i throw Forehand as it put less stress on the shoulder joint.

When filming your throws, make sure your camera is exactly perpendicular to your throwing direction. Sounds obvious, but it's not necessarily the same as your run-up direction. You don't want to confuse nose angle with hyzer angle when analyzing your throws.

15:36 regarding your net, I think that might actually be the GoSports 12x9 net, is it not? I cannot find the 10x10 even on the manufacturer site. Plz link it if you can.
Either way, that btw is a good call, a big ol’ net, so as not to be even subconsciously worried about whether you’re going to miss the net or not, and inadvertently adjusting something mechanically that might not translate well to your throws out on the course. You can apply full focus to your throw mechanics and and what not.
Thanks for the video, as well as all your videos, I am enjoying them and learning a lot.

Would it be safe to say that 8 to 10 degrees is right about nose height for most people?

I always find it funny how people think nose angle is an easy button to distance.

For people without a tech disc, Robbie just go measure how high your clip is on your net then figure the difference between that and your height. This should work out into a sort of equation for people to use their height to mark a net close to the correct launch angle, in theory it should work 🤷🏼‍♂️ haha

The formula is sin(8) * x=height above throw. x is distance from your net. A rule of thumb is you want one foot of rise for every 6 to 7 feet you are from the net.

So are you throwing your in round tee shots at 8 to 10 degrees now? It's good info, but it's not really clear on that ?

If I’m able to hit 500ft with my nose angle being slightly up, what could be my potential distance gained by getting the nose down?

Nope. Gave him another try and listened to 25 minutes of him not saying much of anything. Heard a piece about his upshot, why he has a 10' net, etc. I did a lot of fast forwarding and I think out of 25 mind the message is to go from low to high. I've already heard that one a million times.

so you're aware that people want you to hurry up and deliver on the video title but you mock them? we clicked because we want to know your tip on throwing nose down. we already know we want to throw nose down, we don't need over 10 minutes of persuasive discourse on how important nose angle is before the 10 second tip.

  • @Nnubbs
    @Nnubbs 18 днів тому +1

I love Robbie but this was a ton of rambling and very little nose down conversation. Very little discussion of release or hand placement/positioning. It’s took 15 minutes to introduce the clip.
Like I said, I love Robbie but a lot of noise in what I would describe the wrong order and not even nose down talk.

I disagree. The context he provided beforehand was very helpful for me as someone who doesn't have a coach, is a newer player, and is working on all these things. Everything he mentioned made sense to me. The only thing I wish I had was a tech disc, so even his tips on how to help determine your angle without one were helpful.
