@@justinedse8435 I like mine. I have one both downstairs and upstairs and it has saved me money. I just set a temperature range and let it go. It turns off when I leave and turns on about 20 minutes out from when I get home. Has a setting that if it gets too cold (while off) or hot it cuts on. It's really not complicated. I can also control them remotely so I can make changes while I'm away. Thank you for explaining this. This makes it very simple. I got a Nest and my wife set it up, but it's been changing the damned temperature all the time. So, I bet it has schedules that I need to adjust, and I think it is auto-learning ... Maybe, there are no schedules, and it's just auto-adjusting. Don't know, but now, I can figure it out. Yes, I love it, but we're still adjusting to a new A/C Unit because we had freon and now we've got preon. So, it's a hell of an upgrade. Best decision we ever made, I think. Ours was from 2004, and it was not cooling like it did. But, now, it's a frig in here some evenings -- with how my wife set it, but that's nice and all. But, I've got to get it where it saves poweer, and where I understand why it's happening. So, this video helps me.
The schedule is in a weird spot, not in the settings sub menu, had the same issue and it was fixed once I deleted all the schedule set points through the week. However you might find value in setting schedule points daily/weekly to take advantage of lower night time electricity rates or to cool more aggressively at night if you sleep hot.
Very informative video but had to hit pause and back up several times in order to catch everything being said...hard for an old fogie to absorb things that quickly! I've had my Nest for several years and have always wondered why the temps that I set never stay the same throughout the day. I think now I'm better equipped to figure out all of the settings! Thank you so much.
I've never gotten mine to work - this thermostat seems to be deliberately non-user friendly. I have had to replace mine (which came with my house) with a Honeywell thermostat, which I can understand without a manual. The sellers of the house left me a Nest manual, but it was useless for getting the app to work.
How do you manually switch to a preset temperature or vacation mode? I don’t want to have it controlled by leaf. When I get home I want to switch it back to my manually set schedule
Great video, I have a question,I stay in a cooler place and while I am away I set the eco temperature heat to 56F.When I am at home I had set the heat temperature to 68F.Don’t you think it will consume more energy to bring back the temperature ? Then how Eco energy mode going to save money ?
On the back of the thermostat when you remove it from the wall there is a mini plug on the back? What is that for? Charging the internal battery or for servicing? Thanks.
The "instructions" that come with the Nest thermostat are horrible and this thermostat can be a little confusing to use, this little tutorial is very helpful, but I'm guessing now that I'm just going to have to play with it to get a good feel for it thank you very much for this.
Got one of these as a gift…my old thermostat I would just set it at the temp I wanted it. This thing keeps changing it back to a certain temperature when I really just want to leave it at the temp that I last set it at. Why?
What did you do @1:23 to make the screen change? I did not see you press anything, and you did not say how you got to the next screen. This has been one of the most frustrating things about this thermostat, which I inherited with two houses that I bought. With the first house, I could never get programming to work, and so I switched to a Honeywell thermostat, which is much, much easier to use and is actually intuitive, unlike Nest, which is counterintuitive.
Great video but no mention how to use in a "manual" mode. Although you can adjust current temp, once it hits a pre-programmed schedule time, it automatically engages the schedule and cancels the manual setting. Any insight without deleting all scheduled settings?
Did you ever get Eco mode to go away? we are having the same problem. it just keeps saying that "in 2 hrs the temp will be ...." and it never gets to said temp..we are freezing!

Thank you for sharing this really helped me. I’ve lived in my new home almost 3 months, the previous owners had the nest setup just right. However, after my hubby and I resetting it. I am learning how to use it and have it setup. What I did notice is the on the main screen your left bar where 57 is when u scroll on the dial it moves higher or lower. When I move the dial my right bar moves up or down. Why? Also it’s colder where I live right now, and I would like to have it warmer in the house. It seems like when the system is not on its so cold.
My HVAC Company recommends this for my 86 year old Mom. I just had them put in an Emerson model I purchased, but my Mom (a common complaint) says the downstairs is too cold. They sent someone out, and this time I was careful to ask them what was going on. Her portable heater near her bathroom is skewing the thermostat upstairs, so that everything turns off. He recommends buying a brand with a sensor, and there are only 3 brands. I'm worried the thing will run all the time, as she will set the heat high even at night. You describe that the sensor in a different room can be told to not be the main one at night. This could solve my concern. My question is: by Night...can you set a time for that to begin? She doesn't want to be cold while she is watching the news in the early evening.

Where you bought the wall plate cover for the 3rd generation Nest Thermostat (Nest Learning Thermostat)? I searched Amazon and only found shape of round, not the rectangular like you showed in the video?
Hello, The Only One Thing I Didn't Like About This Was About The (Nest Protect) I Wish You Would Have Shown How To Set Them So I Know I Did It Right! I Had To Ask Friends About It.
Have the nest in our vacation home and have had 2 guest call us saying that it is displaying low battery and to enter lock code. We do have it locked with a minimum temp on AC mode at 70 to protect the condenser. Been trying to trouble shoot if they are removing it from the wall and then putting it back on... Do you know any reasons for it saying low battery? It has only happened twice. Thanks Jay
Yes, if it was removed from the wall that could happen. It could also happen if you were having power outages from the utility at your home. It can also happen if you were having a low battery due to the lack of a common wire. This video explains the common wire low battery problem: ua-cam.com/video/fnGGJ5r9dVU/v-deo.html
Constantly changing the temp in your house when you leave and come back does nothing but cost you more energy and in spending. Find a temp you like and set it there and leave, don't change it up or down don't turn it off or on. You spend so much more energy when your system is trying to return the entire house to the temp you want if you turn it off or let it change while you leave then you ever would just leaving it the same. I went from a almost 400 monthly electric bill doing it the way everyone says to do to a 130 dollar a month electric bill setting my unit to 66 and leaving it alone forever.
Why would you need a ton of settings when that Nest thing won’t even set to a safe temperature. It’s gets colder and suddenly hotter in here after installing Nest. My old thermostat will not let the temperature drop the way this Nest thing does.
I am a senior as well, the explanation was useful and you have helped me understand the scope of what's now possible. Thank you! However, I HATE the nest thermostat, it's beyond geeky and quite ridiculous in my opinion and I truely wish I didn't have it. I either simply want the heating on or off, at the temperature I set at the time. I don't want some cleaver piece of tech trying to work out what I want and putting the heating on when I don't want it. The fact that I need to consult UA-cam to turn on the heating is pretty depressing isn't it!
@@KTibow was gonna say the same thing. Redic someone buys the most advanced, feature rich home thermostat available (at least that Nest offers) and then complains it's too complex. Literally couldn't be simpler to operate, read, navigate, program. Just moved into a new home with this thermostat. No one left any instructions of any kind and I'd never seen one before. I had a modern Lennox digital thermostat that worked quite well in my old home. What I want to do is clear out every preset and control everything with my little fingers.
Received this thermometer as an (energy saving program) no instructions what so ever. Senior here, eyesight not good enough to see all these display features. Does NEST have a thermostat that has larger features? Apparently this one is called Thermostat third generation ?
hi, i can't seem to get the fan to run independently, when i try to run just the fan it gives me a menu "To run the fan, first choose a thermostat mode: Heat, Cool or Heat/Cool" any ideas would be appreciated, wires i have connected are Y1, G, Rc, W1, W2, C
You can choose the mode, then turn the thermostat set point up or down above the current temperature and it will allow you to run the fan independent of providing heating or cooling.
Hi, I am trying to work out how to turn my hot water on via the nest thermostat without having the central heating on ? Can this be done and if so how please ?
Why when I change my temperature does it say “in 2hrs” above the new temperature I dialed in … if I come home and it’s 65° in my house 🥶, and I want it to be 70°, I don’t want it to take 2 hours to reach 70°??
I installed a nest at my cabin and can’t get the heat to turn on when I raise the temp on my phone. I’ve tried switching to the Home setting and I’ve tried changing the temp in the Away setting, But when I arrive the Nest shows the temp I set, but the furnace is not running and the place is cold. Do you have a suggestion? Thx!
Good choice. The integration with the Nest Protect: amzn.to/3dVgjtz to shut off your HVAC system if there's a fire or carbon monoxide is a great feature.
I change my old thermostat to 3rd Gen Nest wires from the wall only 4 wires everything work but I don't have Airwave option in my Nest thermostat in my old thermostat I have that after I turn AC off fan will stay on for couple minute then turns off but with Nest as soon I turn off the AC shootdown the fans too
My thermostat (in the cool mode, no schedule, no programing at all) after reaching the set temperature keeps cooling one degree more and keeps running for more than 8 or 10 minutes more until finally stops. Is this normal?
Living in Florida, I usually put my Nest temp on a cooler than normal temp when guests are coming over and that has always been simple. Usually set at 73.. but with company I put it at 70.......The a/c needed fixing , so when they were done they reset Nest. Now it does something different. It shows the temp I set it to...then above it is "Cool Stage 2"...then above that, on the outer rim is shows white lines and the temp number is 75. I tried to make it cooler, but it struggled and stayed at 74-75....Is this something I need to have them come out for? It seems as though I should be able to reset it to get it off of "Cool Stage 2".....and what does "Cool Stage 2 " mean?
Do you have 2 stage cooling? Sounds like when they reset the thermostat they might have chosen the wrong setting. You could reset the thermostat and set it back up how you had it setup originally. Here's a video that shows you how to reset: ua-cam.com/video/Is7p0frjQYQ/v-deo.html and this video explains the wiring diagram: ua-cam.com/video/CCNIko3iZIE/v-deo.html which will help you determine if you have 2 stage cooling. You can also take the HVAC cover off and look at the terminals in the system to see if you have a Y2 terminal connected. If it's connected you have 2 stage cooling. If it's not connected you don't have 2 stage cooling and the settings are probably wrong.
The house im living in has old radiator heating system. I use nest to control heating. But for some reason I can’t set the temperature below 62. When i do that the eco mode turn on and the heating system doesn’t produce any heat. Any solution for that?

Nice Video, here is my most important question that I can't find an answer. I have a whole house Dehumidifier attached to the system and all cooling and heating is forced air and electric How do I use Nest to turn my dehumidifier on with the main fan to dehumidify the air for the system all around the house?
The E wire. If the fan doesn't activate with it, you can at least set the fan to operate every 15 minutes? I'd assume would kick on though for it. I have heat pump and it asked if I wanted to either use hum, dehum or Aux heat. Not sure if you can use multiple
Why does my Nest have only one setting. Heat. The AC has been working fine until some kids messed with it. Now when I try to change the settings i only get heat as an option?
Thank you for your straight forward explanation of how the 3rd generation works. Following installation, and after 5 days of no heat late afternoon and evening, watching your video points me to a faulty unit or incorrect installation of the Heat Link.
In summary: If you do “not” have a “combined” advanced degree in-electrical engineering, IT, AI, Blockchain, Computer Science and Computer coding... you will hate the Nest Thermostat.
I find my New last yr S3 Nest to be worryingly insensitive - It allows swings of c 1.5c swings up and down from Set temp (3c swing) resulting in shivering and sweating as it allows temp to Swing 66-71 F - Surprised it is calibrated as crudely as 0.5c steps, then ignores those anyway..! Can it be set up to instruct boiler before such massive deviations? - Eg say, 0.3c?
My thermostat looks exactly like the one in this video. However the options are different. I don't have an option for cool. I just wanna turn the damn thing on! It's driving me nuts. It says it's 77 inside. I want it down to 72ish and I can't do it!

Muze- thanks for your info too! 👍❣
How do you send hate mail to the inventor ?????
Why whould you do that?
@@swisstrader does it heat up and cool down? How does sister suck
@@swisstrader did you try to call them and yeah fuck the autocorrect I only suck and my frend 😉
Complicated. I hate mine
Home Depot installed one for my 85 year old dad that doesn't have a smart phone or internet and the kid that installed it didn't explain it very well and I'm 2 1/2 hours away. This thing is not intuitive at all, horrible design.
How to use T with a gas furnace as primary for heat with heat pump being inoperable. I got the heat pump on a deal but don't need to use it because it is too expensive.
Where you bought the wall plate cover for the 3rd generation Nest Thermostat (Nest Learning Thermostat)? I searched Amazon and only found shape of round, not the rectangular like you showed in the video?
It doesn’t LEARN, it MIMICS!!!
How can you set the nest to hold on a specific temp? If I leave on vacation I want only one temp setting for the entire time I'm gone.
Hello,
The Only One Thing I Didn't Like About This Was About The (Nest Protect) I Wish You Would Have Shown How To Set Them So I Know I Did It Right! I Had To Ask Friends About It.
Got the answer I needed in the first 3 minutes or so, thank you!
Was the answer to get a DIFFERENT THERMOSTAT?
You DON’T have it set to 70 to PROTECT THE CONDENSER, you have it set to 70 TO PROTECT YOUR FINANCES!!!!! BE HONEST!!!!
This was great!!! ;)
Great job. Thank you.
Why would you need a ton of settings when that Nest thing won’t even set to a safe temperature. It’s gets colder and suddenly hotter in here after installing Nest. My old thermostat will not let the temperature drop the way this Nest thing does.
Yeah it's kinda fucked. But you can disable all that. Just Google how to turn ur nest thermostat manual mode
Thank you so much for this video cos the manual that comes it is useless
I am a senior as well, the explanation was useful and you have helped me understand the scope of what's now possible. Thank you! However, I HATE the nest thermostat, it's beyond geeky and quite ridiculous in my opinion and I truely wish I didn't have it. I either simply want the heating on or off, at the temperature I set at the time. I don't want some cleaver piece of tech trying to work out what I want and putting the heating on when I don't want it. The fact that I need to consult UA-cam to turn on the heating is pretty depressing isn't it!
Why did you bother buying it then?
@@KTibow was gonna say the same thing. Redic someone buys the most advanced, feature rich home thermostat available (at least that Nest offers) and then complains it's too complex. Literally couldn't be simpler to operate, read, navigate, program. It's 3 clicks max for literally anything 🤣
Maybe some people need the sliding top bar instead of a circular dial? 🤣🤣 Not knocking the video tho, was super well put together and great for a would be buyer to see all the available features and if it's too complex for their tastes
EXACTLY!!! The STUPID THING shows the SET TEMPERATURE and doesn’t show the ACTUAL TEMPERATURE !!! It also doesn’t LEARN, it just MIMICS WHAT YOU HAVE DONE!!!! STUPID PIECE OF SHIT!!!
Just moved into a new home with this thermostat. No one left any instructions of any kind and I'd never seen one before. I had a modern Lennox digital thermostat that worked quite well in my old home. What I want to do is clear out every preset and control everything with my little fingers.
@@RitaJune-gf5cy Just follow the steps on this UA-cam clip and you'll be fine, even if they are somewhat lengthy! Good luck!
Received this thermometer as an (energy saving program) no instructions what so ever. Senior here, eyesight not good enough to see all these display features. Does NEST have a thermostat that has larger features? Apparently this one is called Thermostat third generation ?
Thank you for the information. Good video ✌️
Nest app on iphone only shows Home and Away but will not let me change temps or anything else
How can I connect my nest thermostat to my phone and be able to adjust the thermostat on my phone from anywhere?
Just got my nest hooked up and when I set my temp to 68f the comes on and heats the house to 77f why? Thanks
BECAUSE IT SUCKS!!! And learn how to write!!!
Thanks! Great video.
hi, i can't seem to get the fan to run independently, when i try to run just the fan it gives me a menu "To run the fan, first choose a thermostat mode: Heat, Cool or Heat/Cool" any ideas would be appreciated, wires i have connected are Y1, G, Rc, W1, W2, C
You can choose the mode, then turn the thermostat set point up or down above the current temperature and it will allow you to run the fan independent of providing heating or cooling.
@@OneHourSmartHome thanks will try that
Yeah, it’s REALLY STUPID!!! You shouldn’t have to choose a mode before you can run the fan!!!
I’m trying figure out why nest shuts on its own and says it’s not connected when it is
Learn how to write!
Me too!
Hi,
I am trying to work out how to turn my hot water on via the nest thermostat without having the central heating on ? Can this be done and if so how please ?
The nest is for a FURNACE, NOT a WATER HEATER!
Why when I change my temperature does it say “in 2hrs” above the new temperature I dialed in … if I come home and it’s 65° in my house 🥶, and I want it to be 70°, I don’t want it to take 2 hours to reach 70°??
Because it is NOT A SMART SYSTEM, it is a STUPID SYSTEM!!!!
Yes, please help!!
Thx!
GET A DIFFERENT SYSTEM!!!!
The NEST PROTECT feature was my final choice for smart thermostats. So many possibilities so I went for safety.
Good choice. The integration with the Nest Protect: amzn.to/3dVgjtz to shut off your HVAC system if there's a fire or carbon monoxide is a great feature.
I would love to have you comment today (3years later) and hear how happy you are?
I change my old thermostat to 3rd Gen Nest wires from the wall only 4 wires everything work but I don't have Airwave option in my Nest thermostat in my old thermostat I have that after I turn AC off fan will stay on for couple minute then turns off but with Nest as soon I turn off the AC shootdown the fans too

Can eco mode work with 2 phones if 1 person leaves but someone else is home?
Do you have video for first generation
My is at 86. I tried to set it to 79 it says "in 2+ hr" its been 4 hours now went down 1 degree. Any tips?
My thermostat (in the cool mode, no schedule, no programing at all) after reaching the set temperature keeps cooling one degree more and keeps running for more than 8 or 10 minutes more until finally stops. Is this normal?
Thank you, this has been a very frustrating, non-intuitive thermostat. I turned off all of the "smart" functions.
how can I schedule it to turn on and off. i want it to turn on at 3 pm and OFF AT 9 pm ?
How do I set a daily schedule on the app?
Just figured it out.
Google Nest Temperature Sensor is not available in Europe?!
Must be because of the Communist nature of Europe .
Helpful video. The unit was stretching my patience . You sound awfully like DC Rainmaker, a reviewer on You tube :-)
The house im living in has old radiator heating system.
I use nest to control heating.
But for some reason I can’t set the temperature below 62.
When i do that the eco mode turn on and the heating system doesn’t produce any heat.
Any solution for that?
Get a different thermostat.
I have this thermostat and I hate it!..it came with my house. I have a very difficult time adjusting it. If the screen is black it NEVER responds to my adjustments. I can't turn it on or off if it is on..ugh..
Read the manual!!!
Why does my Nest have only one setting. Heat. The AC has been working fine until some kids messed with it. Now when I try to change the settings i only get heat as an option?
Great!
Thank you for your straight forward explanation of how the 3rd generation works. Following installation, and after 5 days of no heat late afternoon and evening, watching your video points me to a faulty unit or incorrect installation of the Heat Link.
It was probably due to the “smart logic” of the STUPID SYSTEM that MIMICS things RATHER THAN LEARNS things!!!
Hi I still can't mine done
It has been used several times and loved.
Can you pls teach me how to setup Heat pls
I have a newer one than this. All I need to know is why I set cooling to 71 degrees and it say 63 when I come back.
I have recently had this thermostat installed. I can't get my head around it. 😫
That’s because it is a STUPID SYSTEM!!!!
It's total.garbage and it will fail!
Is it a good idea to set my thermostat at heat -cool for a place like Canada where the temperature varies?
Only if you want to stay comfortable!
In summary:
If you do “not” have a “combined” advanced degree in-electrical engineering, IT, AI, Blockchain, Computer Science and Computer coding... you will hate the Nest Thermostat.
Even if YOU DO, you will HATE IT EVEN MORE!!!!
😢
I find my New last yr S3 Nest to be worryingly insensitive - It allows swings of c 1.5c swings up and down from Set temp (3c swing) resulting in shivering and sweating as it allows temp to Swing 66-71 F - Surprised it is calibrated as crudely as 0.5c steps, then ignores those anyway..!
Can it be set up to instruct boiler before such massive deviations? - Eg say, 0.3c?
Centigrade is inaccurate to begin with. Fahrenheit is 1.8x more accurate !!!’
Appreciate your video. Rather helpful.
My thermostat looks exactly like the one in this video. However the options are different. I don't have an option for cool. I just wanna turn the damn thing on! It's driving me nuts. It says it's 77 inside. I want it down to 72ish and I can't do it!
