In the Crow sequel, when Kirsten Dunst got her lips sewn together, she ends the movie with a series of cool piercings in place of where the needle holes were formed.
What do YOU bring to the table, Jerry?
    Nothing.
    Pathetic.

Wow. I picked up this issue when I was about 7. That thing about the villain sewing lips together made a strong impression on me at that age, but I haven't even thought about this story for more than 35 years. Thank you for refreshing a long lost memory from my comic reading youth.

Ever notice how alot of male heroes are powered by guilt and tend to self-punish their selves (Spider-Man, Hulk, Batman) whereas their female counterparts are all about self-empowerment and loving the powers?

Thank you for continuing your Spider-Woman reviews!!! I was first exposed to Jess via the cartoon, which was nothing like the comic. She had a quasi-boyfriend (with a fragile masculine shell, just like Jerry) and a nephew, but they never mentioned Jessica's siblings. Jess was the editor of a magazine and had a power set that changed based on an episode's needs. Spider-Man showed up in the short-lived cartoon, which is probably why most people assume that Jessica is closely related to/a rip-off of Peter.
The Needle was one of many supernatural/horror characters that SW faced in her first two years of publication. I assume these themes were still popular and they kept Jess as far away from Peter as possible - I assume that was the primary directive given to the book's creative team(s).
If you want to continue your deep dive, I offer some suggestions:
#13-16 - The Nekra/Shroud storyline (70's era therapy - cringe alert - and the debut of Lindsay McCabe)
#37-38 - Jess meets the X-Men!!! Chris Claremont was now writing and had interesting ideas for incorporating Jess into the Marvel universe. He also moved her to San Francisco and provided a better love interest than Jerry (never trust a man with Reed Richards' sideburns).
#42-46: Jess meets the Yakuza, deals with Viper (allegedly her mother) and her past on Wundagore, encounters the Kingpin (with a New Mutants Easter Egg), and romps with the Impossible Man.
    Keep up the good work!!!

I love the Woflman/Gruenwald issues in the '70s. There darker tone and supernatural elements were what drew me to those issues initially and I hope one day that we see a return to that.

I feel like there is some real interesting things they could do with the needle, the ability to freeze people with a look, and the body horror aspect of like sewing lips shut could be expanded (sewing arms to your side or legs together, etc), especially if it was a supernatural ability like the eye, so victims couldn't just easily get it removed at a hospital. And a giant needle/rapier, you could make a real interesting villain out of him

I've enjoyed your Spider-Woman series on your channel. Can you do one on the Brothers Grimm storyline? Or maybe Gypsy Moth? Or the Waxman? I preferred the more horror-based Spider-Woman stories to her bounty hunter or private investigator stint. Although she could've been a PI and still kept the horror. It could've been like the Angel TV show where he was both a PI and involved in the supernatural. Plus that was also set in Los Angeles, like this comic.

I feel like you'd really enjoy Dazzler #15, wherein Spider-Woman is paid to look into a potential lead for Dazzler to learn about her mother and leaves the ordeal thinking of Dazzler as something of a naïve fool.
This is later referenced only one time (to my knowledge), in Avengers #221, which sees Wasp bring in a bunch of lady superheroes to fill out their two remaining open member slots. As a big Spider-Woman fan who never particularly cared for Dazzler, I love Jessica's unnecessarily catty sniping of Alison, reminding her and readers that she still thinks she's an idiot.
    Jim Shooter was the connection.

Damn, I was sure "The Needle" would turn out to be a woman punishing men who don't listen to women (also, it would fit with villains mainly being the same gender as their respective heroes, probably because it's less problematic to portray women to fight other women than women to fight men). Jerry might have learned something then!

Really liked your series on Spider-Woman! I’ve recently read through most of SW’s original series so it was nice to discover your show since this isn’t a comic series that a lot of people have talked about.
Regarding Jerry Hunt, it seemed like Gruenwald realized that there was something off with the relationship that Wolfman had created. Gruenwald’s stories didn’t explicitly put Jerry down, but several of his plots drove home what an insecure jerk he was.
SW’s original series was all over the place even with its better writers, which I would regard Gruenwald as. He made many changes, and dropping Jerry Hunt was one which I welcomed.
I’ll check out the rest of your shows but I hope you’ll cover more Spider-Woman sometime! Issues 11-12 go more into the weird psychology of the Jessica/Jerry relationship while tying SW’s own short but already-convoluted history with a wacky Silver Age Iron Man villain.
Issues 17-18 get really freaky while exploring Jessica’s inexperienced attempts to pick up a guy post-Jerry Hunt. Very dark and creepy, but also a great example of the unique and oddly relatable aspect that SW had going for her during her early years!

Jessica's baby was named Gerry bcos in the mc2 universe (home of Mayday Parker/Spider-Girl) that was the name of her son who in that continuity became the new Spider-Man. However it is very possible that MC2 Gerry was named after Gerry from Jessica's early appearances because Tom DeFalco (tge main architect of the MC2 universe) tends to use continuity a lot and was around Marvel's offices back when Jess debuted.

Also, I've got kind-of three articles of clothing that I very much enjoy wearing. "Kind-of" because two go together. There's this one blue polo shirt (yes, I'm that old!) that drapes well, feels great on and catches what blue remains in my grey eyes. The other two are the leather Aussie cowboy hat and long coat that I wear during the winter/rainy months. That avatar pic is not that far from how I actually go out and about! 😁

YES, WATCH THE CARTOON. Jessica is the editor (and implied owner and star reporter) of a crime magazine called Justice Magazine, and she's constantly babysitting her annoying ass nephew Billy and always being followed around by her photographer Jeff Hunt (whose name and appearance are surprisingly close to Jerry Hunt, aka Mr. Soup Cans). And she single-handedly defeats Dormammu, Dracula and Graviton. I repeat, Dormammu, Dracula and Graviton. Even full Avengers teams have trouble with them in the comics!

One of Marv Wolfman's main writing tools is the new love interest. It is rare for him to start a run in some character or team without quickly introducing a new character that furthers innovative romantic subplots in that title. Unfortunately, his characterization is less than stellar.
Spider-Woman's original ongoing was indeed quite tentative and seemed to reboot every ten issues or so. But it did succeed big time on creating a character that was not derivative from Spider-Man except at the meta level.

I have a camo jacket that I think reflects the tomboy n me. I wear it all the time & I definitely feel confident & spectacular when I wear it.

Okay first off yay for more spiderwoman, and second I do have a piece of clothing that does good for me. I love my legs, so I love my skinny jeans that show them off. Also I would totally love if Marvel was like "yeah Jerry's the dad" mostly so people not in the know would be totally like "Who?" In which case I show them this video :)

I suppose I have had several booty pants based on the number of girls commenting on my butt when I've passed them by, but I never looked at my ass in the mirror so wouldn't know which of my pants are best for this and I don't really care either.

Spiderwoman can fly? What does that have to do with spiders?
