  • Oil was leaking from the bell housing area, notably it was dripping from the starter bolts. A garage diagnosed the problem as a "rear main seal" leak. Since you can pull the inspection cover and see the flex plate appeared dry, I tried replacing valve cover gaskets, oil pressure sensor, and the oil pan gasket before going after the rear main seal. I learned that this generation of Chevy engines actually have a rear cover that contains the rear main seal. The cover contains the rear main seal and also connects oil galleries. It has a gasket and that was what had failed. Other UA-cam videos show excellent step-by-step instructions for the job. This video doesn't show the entire process, but it should help you diagnose your leak and provide some insight and shortcuts should you need to tackle this job. By the way, this is a big job. It took 3 days worth of work using a lift in the Auto Hobby Shop for me to get it done. Hopefully, yours will go quicker! Thanks for watching!

    We have a 2005 Suburban 185,000 miles at work and its got not only a rear main seal leaking but leaking around the front timing cover and the shop said the oil cooler block off plate is also leaking. It's costing us a pretty penny to get all that work done. Nice video.

    While your in there I'd also suggest changing the oil restriction barbell, it's plastic and does wear out.

    If one had to change the rear main seal and the pan gasket, how would you go about doing that? I have a 2003 z71. I picture changing the pan gasket first, then drop the trans etc to do the rear gasket/and seal. It seems having the lack of support of the trans while doing the pan gasket could be a challenge. BTW. This would be done on jack stands, Thoughts?

    I found a sure fire way to see if the leak is coming from the rear oil galley gasket. Put 10w30 in it and it'll start to bleed out like a wounded animal.

    I've been chasing the rear leak on a 2007 suburban with 326K miles for years now. I did the rear cover at 256K miles and it was leak free until 300K miles then it started leaking again. Surely it's no the rear cover again, right? Did the oil pan today and it's leaking just the same. The torque converter has a shudder just before lockup so I modified the PWM TC solenoid to be on/off and no more shudder. I added some UV dye so while I have the suburban on blocks, I'm going to remove the trans yet again and will be trying to pinpoint the leak so I can hopefully fix it permanently. Will also be replacing the torque converter so I can go back to the PWM solenoid.

      Mine had a really bad leak when daily driven about a quart every 9 days. 240k miles on it. valve cover gaskets helped a little ( no more smoking /burning oil under the hood. I fully degreased the cam sensor and oil pressure switch area and there was oil there a couple of hours later. Saw another video that showed a leaking valley pan gasket so a couple of weeks later pulled the intake to do the valley pan gasket and found the rear right and left side bolts were finger tight and most of the rest of the bolts defiantly not torqued to spec anymore and the valley pan gasket was completely flat and brittle. Lots of gunky oil build up surrounding all sides of the valley pan. Replacing that gasket really slowed down the leak, but did not stop it. Its been almost 3 weeks and I am down about 1/4 of a quart. I cleaned everything again with brake cleaner and then used baby powder and there are no leaks from the valley pan, oil pressure sender or cam sensor up top. (but looks like cam sensor would leak inside the the bellhousing). Ordered a walker cam sensor from Walmart free shipping with walmart plus $27.14 amazon is about the same price as is rock auto. I am hoping this fixes it if not. I am pulling the motor to do oil pan, timing chain gaskets, rear main and plate.

    Do you have to take the transfer case off? I’m about to drop the trans but I do not want to take the transfer case off. I don’t have the lift I’m working out if my drive way. I have a transmisión jack on the transmission and a jack on the transfer case. I was going jack down the trans a bit then the transfer case little by little until I have enough space to work on the rear main seal. Im not planing to remove the trans all the way maybe about 7 inches .. or like I said maybe drop it together with the transfer case. What are your thoughts l

    I'm having the same problem with a 05 Sierra with the 5.3 (same thing) I was wondering if it might not be easier to pull the engine out to do this?

    • @larrywatson1171
      @larrywatson1171 2 роки тому

      That's exactly what I did pulled the engine out and then just went ahead and redone all the gaskets of seals it definitely saves time rather than trying to pull the four wheel drive system and transmission and all that out

    Did this fix the oil leak? I have the exact same leak on my truck. It drips in the same spot as the video was showing

      It could be. If you pull your transmission to address the leak, I recommend replacing the rear cover and its gasket. The service part from GM comes with a new rear main seal already installed in the new rear cover. The price is very reasonable and you even get new bolts! Good luck with your project!
