So much of what I do is for money that it’s a mental leap to say to myself, ‘do this for you.’ But you’re correct-this is how we push our craft and get better. Thanks for the encouragement, good sir.
Excellent points. I worked with people who spend tons of money on gear and then trying to save on hiring the right people for the job. The result of that is pretty mediocre in most cases.
Great suggestions, Matteo. I’ve thought about doing spec ads, but never followed through. I guess the trick is to choose a product I really would enjoy myself. Thanks again for the inspiration.
ahhh such a great video man. I agree 100% with all off this and have been seriously thinking about investing in my personal ideas. Time to get to work!
Grande matteo! Absolutely true and thanks for give me some good motivation in this quiet period of mine to create something cool instead of always chasing new clients
Matteo!! You never act creative with client money!! If that client gave you that gig its because he want what you already are good at. what you already master. be creative with your own money that client paid you!! and then you sell that to a new client. that's my modo and it fkng works!! love your talent!! cheers!
Matteo, love your videos! I’m curious, what was the process like to move to Florida as a foreigner? I’d like to do something similar and would appreciate any advice or insight.
I thought spec work was a 2006 kinda thing. I mean, people do personal projects for sure, but do they also create a 'Jeep' or 'Nike' kinda ad and display it to the same companies? Does it work today, and gets people hired by these companies?
2006? 😂 I think there are more spec work out there than actual commercials. Getting hired by those company was never really a think because they have multi million dollars contract with AD agencies. It happens occasionally that they might be interested in purchasing your project, but it’s rare and you don’t shoot a spec for that reason. With that said there are a good amount of spec ads platform coming up and they put together brands and creators.
@@matteobertoli Wait, so the objective is not to show your 'Jeep' work to 'Jeep', then who do you show it to? (With a disclaimer that its a spec work). I mean, if 'Jeep' won't hire you, I don't think 'Subaru' will hire you as well as all of these huge companies have an Ad agency. So, what's the workflow here regarding spec?, Who's the final viewer besides our friends/peers?
@@matteobertoli I did. You mean, just put it on your website/instagram? That's fine, but personally it feels like this spec work needs to be pushed actively to decision-making eyeballs. Not sure how, but if it stays on our personal social media, I'm not sure how much exposure it will get. I mean, none of us is like kylie jenner :)
Great video as always Matteo! Where do you find inspo for spec ads / personal projects? I've been going through a creative drought where I really want to make something but I just haven't had any ideas or come across anything inspiring for months. Really struggling to get out of this rut, so I'm curious to what you do.
It’s very hard, but I think you need a friend that shares your same passion and you can get together over dinner and get creative. It’s very hard when we are all by ourselves, that’s for sure. Traveling also helps me a lot. The past couple of years were brutal in terms of inspiration. Just cause we re overwhelmed by news from the media that it’s very hard to be positive and inspired. But definitely find someone with the same passion in your city and start talking!
Comunque gran bel video come sempre e consiglio. I know hundred of lawsuit on pictures, figure it out on famous brand. It's my same worry. Maybe will be better use a fake brand??? I know hundreds of lawsuits on puctures, figure it out on famous brands. I think its at your own risk . However very nice video as always, and nice advice Matteo Bertoli
3 days with 4people at 100 dollars each day per person, making it 400 per day. 1200 for the project. Then the edit cost if needing special effects or other specialized editing? Is there not another more cost effective and efficient way?
Great video! Could You make as well budget breakdown for this kind of project? It would be great to know how much it costs 😏 Greetings Bro, keep going ! 🙏
I never thought of renting gear and being able to amass a crew - but now that you've mentioned it, fellow Film/UA-camr DSLRguide has always said that a good story, actors and crew will always outweigh gear. Thank you!
Don’t encourage spec work !!! EVER !!! It makes clients think they can exploit film makers & artists. YES invest in personal work …. But NEVER SPEC WORK…. Clients see this kind of ridiculous hard sell & jump on it & next thing is … you’ve got film makers being asked - ‘Can you work for free?…’ They’ll promise you your NEXT DREAM job & give you a NIGHTMARE of absolute LIES. Everyone needs to GET PAID, especially now that the pandemic is over & everyone is looking for PAID WORK. Full stop. You don’t go into a bar & ask for free drinks telling the barman … I’ll come back with friends & spend money tomorrow. Just don’t do it .. it lowers the bar for film makers all over the world. It’s hard enough already to break into this game. Doing it for free won’t get you anywhere.
No idea what you are talking about. If a client wanna use any of my work they’ll pay the price. You are the only owner of that project/footage. If You are that dumb to give it away for free, that’s another story. If Apple wanna buy one of my spec ad I’ll gladly send them a big, fat invoice :) Everything else you just said is complete nonsense.

Excellent points.

Agree with you! As long as you do something you are passionate about you are good to go!
Great suggestions, Matteo. I’ve thought about doing spec ads, but never followed through. I guess the trick is to choose a product I really would enjoy myself. Thanks again for the inspiration.
Bravo Matteo! Very good advice. When I've shot spec stuff/personal projects - it's always led to paid work!
This is such great advice. I don't agree with the whole UA-cam buying gear thing. It's way better to invest that money into spec to actually get work!
Great video, definitely will be filming more spec work to get that client.
Thank you for this!
Your channel is so good!
Glad to see you back man! You’re amazing as always!
Well said Mr Bertoli ! Very TRUE !
you the best mateoo!!!!
Finally it’s out. The wait is over. Thank you Matteo!!

i moved to Dallas from New York to do just this thanks for this video
can you make a video about your handheld shoulder rig?
God bless you Matteo keep giving us more knowledge.
This was awesome, thanks for making g this video
This was very insightful. Keep it up!!!
Exactly at that point where the client work although good is boring and creatively draining, time to through some personal work into the mix.

Watches I saw in this video: Tudor BB58, Panerai Luminor, Rolex Explorer II. Did I miss anything? ;)
You got them all! Ahah
love this channel
Thank you Matteo for this video 🙏🏻
Hi Matt, could do a content on what program you should recommend for blackmagic users as an editing tool
Pretty easy: davinci resolve ;)

I saw that panerai and knew you were a watch guy.

About 8 hours

@@matteobertoli Matteo, I wonder how a european guy gets to travel & work all over the U.S (and afford it..hotel expenses etc)?
what is the best country to spend 2 weeks before arriving to US?
