Large MOLLE pack - digital camo, internal sleep system.
MOLLE with external sleep system - desert camo
Medium ALICE pack - this has been my main camping pack for about 14 - 16 years. This one is woodland camo.
One of the things that I really liked about the large molle is how much webbing it has. The pack also has webbing on the bottom of the pack to strap a sleeping bag, tent, tarp or anything else.
One of the things that I did not like about the large molle - it did not have a radio pouch inside the pack like the alice pack does. Nor does the pack have pouches on the outside of the pack. The plastic frame is also a draw back. Nor do I like having to use the pack with a frame - if the frame breaks your just out of luck.
The desert camo molle pack has very little webbing on it, no pouch on the outside and only one pouch on the outside of the pack.
The Medium Alice pack has 3 outside pouches - which are just the right size for storing rain gear and a 1 pound bottle of propane for a stove.
The metal snaps on the Alice Pack will last where as the plastic quick disconects will give out and break a tooth after about a year or two. I like my Alice Pack but may add some more comfy straps or cushion.
@lustercowx through my 8 years of being in the military and constantly doin exercise and deploying i have NEVER ....and i will put in quotation "NEVER" HAD A FRAME BREAK ON ME from quick disconnects to grabbing on the go to doin a 5k/10k ruck march and when there fully loaded were usually sitting with 75+ pounds give or take ..now previous generation frames III,II,and I were terrible but the Gen IV frame has no problems..the sustainment pouches on every bag are huge and overall its a great pack
@SoWe1 the AL:ICE pack, and the molle to i believe, have an external fame. with the alice pack, at the base of the frame where the pack would meet your lower back, it has a padded area that extends out from the pack to meet your back, and the hipstrap goes from there. ill attach a picture to help you understand a little better. i would personally go with the ALICE. i have both. i LOVE my alice, and the molle is nice too, but the plastic frame bends and breaks too much. the main differnce between
"i dont care if i want to strap the kitchen sink to this pack, there should be webbing for me to do so" hahahaha this guy is so under rated
Hi Kevin, I follow many of your videos. Great video. I am into organization and compartmentalization. I will take the medium A.L.I.C.E. over the others every time. I do have extra compartments hung on my A.L.I.C.E. Also, I will at some time probably add the upgrade HellCat shoulder straps and padded waist strap (I am getting older and I could use the extra padding.
if issued from CIF (military) you get two pouches to add on the sides...
Weird, never knew they made a MOLLE pack with an internal sleep system
Nice video, do you have any sustainment pouches strapped to the molle pack yet? I've found you can't go wrong with putting one on each side. Whats nice is that you can fit a total of 4. I have the ACU pack and I have two ACU pouches one coyote and one woodland camo. It helps me know exactly where my rain gear is etc.
Firstly, I am not in a position to breach the first amendment as I am not in a position to pass a law in the united states so there is no need to worry about that, not sure why you brought it up to be honest but there's nothing to worry about.
I never said the assault pack was not part of the complete Molly rucksack, only that you were incorrect when you said this pouch was to hold gas mask and bandoleer, when in fact it's a claymore pocket. you raised the assault pack. :)
I know the bandoleer your referring to and I understand your mistake now. that's not an assault pack. its the older molle pack with claymore pouch and separate sleep system carrier (not used in the vid). I'd suggest less rage and more attention might improve your comprehension, Once again the random insults make you appear even more foolish, perhaps step back form the internet and consider you may be wrong rather than throwing insults as a defence :)
spent five years in the u.s. navy. I was a rock kicker not of the salty breed and i absolutely hated the alice packs. To small no storage space for anything other then foul weather gear ( was in iceland) but all in all in my experience it was completely useless. I cannot voice my distaste for the military grade alice pack enough. Buy something else. Sorry to all you people who love the military surplus stuff. Most of it is very good stuff. just not the alice pack.
What brand/model number Large MOLLE pack is that. I am looking for one with the internal sleep system but it is hard to know what one to look for as descriptions in amazon.com and other websites dont tell you if it has a internal sleep system. I really like how the one you show has a compartment seperator that lets you access the main compartment from the bottom sleeping bag compartment. I need help finding the right model/brand. I want a quality military spec pack.
@SoWe1 (cont.) the alice back and a hiking pack you find these days is the frame. MOST hiking packs you find these days have internal frames which, in my opinion, just arent as good as a an extrenal frame. keep in mind also that these were designed for use by the military so they are MORE than tried and true and can take quite a beating. If you want a real good pack, id go for the ALICE. i personally swear by them.
@FutureOfUSMC I would recommend an ALICE ruck, it is very durable and and can fulfill many roles. As far as shoulder straps go, I prefer the "Super Strap" made by Spec Ops. You can find them under clearance on their website for about $30 bucks. When it comes to a kidney pad, there are many options out there but for the money I would suggest simply duct taping (green duct tape) a section of Iso Mat for added comfort. Let me know if you have any other questions.
If anyone is considering the MOLLE packs I would highly recommend avoiding anything with those plastic frames. They are light weight but they are brittle and will easily start breaking if you begin approaching 40 lbs or more. As a former infantry marine, I can honestly say you're going to have a very hard time finding a better ruck sack than the old ALICE pack. As for shoulder straps, Spec Ops makes some VERY nice pair called "Super Straps and I swear by them!"
Best thing you can do with a Alice pack large or med is take the shoulder straps and instead of buying expensive straps is go to a craft store, buy a sheet of 2'' thick soft foam and just duck tape it to the underside of the straps and add to sheet to the weight belt, might not look "tat-i-cool" but nothing is more comfortable, Black Hawk or even Tactical Tailor has nothing on it. Do it, you'll find out I'm right.
@goodnightChesty1775 Yep I like the metal snaps much better.
No, seriously, RTFM, read the f***ing manual. It describes what it is. Plenty of people/units use it for other things but it's a claymore pouch by design. :-) so once again I'd say learn your facts and learn some manners, no need to insult everyone who you think is wrong, you end up looking very foolish and aggressive.
@Omnivorous1One the pack with the sleep system is a molle 2 rucksack if you look at it in a picture it will be one bag only and if you see 2 bags one on top of another then its the previous adition ...make sure you purchase a generation 4 (IV) frame for its far Superior to its older models ...hope this helps good hiking ...
got me a MOLLE II with gen IV frame. All 3 color desert. 40 bucks. love it. had it for almost 2 years now, take it to school, hiking, camping or wherever. Heavy use and no damage yet. Love it. Only con I can think of is the "no pockets/pouches" except for the standard one on the back. But its ok. Worth it.
On your med.ruck you had a LC1 and a LC2 pack strap! In the vid the strap you had in your hand was LC1 ! In my (opinion) ALICE is the way to go,Ive had those plastic frames snap like a toothpick once ruck was loaded to capacity! All though I have put the (molle) waistbelt on my (alice) frame, day and night difference! ;) WORKS GREAT!! Thanks for the vid!
Can anyone tell me if there is a after market item to put on backpack shoulder straps to give it some grip? Some packs already have rubber grips to keep from sliding around on shoulders but mine doesn't. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
I have watched this and read alot of the postings on your boards and im still torn between the MOLLE II Standard pack or the large ALICE... then other bags keep popping up here and there. Ugh decisions decisons
@SoWe1 oh yea. with a regular backpack, all the weight is on your shoulders, whereas with a pack such as the alice or molle, it puts alot of the weight on your hips making it easier to carry heavier loads, longer distances.
You should do a vid showing how to attach pouches to the ALICE pack with ALICE clips. Whenever I attache using ALICE clips there is too much play and motion in the pouch. No one on YT has ALICE clip videos.
Actually it is a claymore pouch, the bandoleer arrives packaged in there when issued but that's not it's purpose. Maybe RTFM next time before calling names and making yourself seem foolish.
Nah; external. The large Ruck and Sleep System sacks hang off the plastic frame. The sustainment pouches hang off the sides of the ruck sack. For internal frame packs, look at the CFP-90 and the ILBE.
As for prices, I saw ALICE packs for $32.88 on Fleet farms website under military surplus for a large one, but I saw 3 day MOLLE assault packs for $50- $200.
You should the pack Im having made at the moment. It is just like an ALICE Pack but it is covered in webbing. Front opens up like a panel pack and the back is just like a standard ALICE pack. The inside of the front panel is going to have individual mesh pouches for storing small gear and the are all attached to the inside with HD velcro. All mounted in a steel frame. I will be selling them on my website soon in Black, OD, Tan and ACU. 100% American Made By Americans using all American material.
nice vid clear comparisions.explained well thanks man you helped me chose a molle.and i am well pleased with it. respect thanks and good luck.
Our issued large MOLLE packs are fantastic. At first when we got them, we were like WTF is this plastic crap? But we learned to love it because it's lighter than the ALICE and you can fit tons of more crap in it. Good vid!
radio pouch is available for the mollie pack probably wont find many cause everyone threy them out when they had them but they can be found
As for pockets inside the molle packs, there are radio pouches you can get and strap into the main compartment.
Hooah but if you upgrade you should get usmc ilbe its carrys weight like a dream you wont regret it
Upgrade that Alice belt and should straps with the same Molle equipment you used on the Molle packs.
alice... all the way. got 2 packs. one for pt (filed with 30 lbssand) and other for camping n shhit
Are you serious Alice packs are huge with 3,800 cubic inches you can put so much in there
i have all the same ruck sacks and i prefer the od green mountain ruck
i found one of these on ebay only it had what you need for a radio pouch
if issued from CIF (military) you get towo pouches to add on the sides
hose frames on the alice pack can stand up to a hundred pounds
or you could buy a alice pack and sew molle webbing onto it
best price i can find besides garage sales
tonys tactical
@SNUZZLETHAT used,they shouldn't be more than $30
are molle packs made with plastic inner frame?
What would you recommend? ALICE, or MOLLE?
Then add a oven and your right at home!
Great vid Kev, thanks
@TheRickIRL for running n hikes
Agreed.. Especially if we WERE to get an EMP? Or, hell, even for OPSEC, why would you have a TRACKING device/? Learn Signal mirrors usage ( easy), learn , get a USGS map, learn to manage a compass.. Geesh..
i sowed some bag in the molle
I have heavily modded my Med ALICE, better put, I have a heavily hybridized the ALICE with MOLLE II pouches, shoulder straps and kidney belt. Google "Hellcat" for the main idea.
@dlmarti You could always sew some straps on the bottom. If you are just carrying around your sleeping bag, the sewing doesent have to be all that tough anyways.
My map case on the ALICE looks just like yours. You think some duct tape would be a good idea with all those holes?
I like using the small Alice pack without the frame. It works great for what it is.
Good video. Thanks for the comparison. Any garden updates soon? I could watch the garden videos all day.
interesting
So I used an LC2 Alice forever. Then I bought one to run a 1606 on and 'hellcat' modded it. Then I got a molle 2 riflemans ruck ( external sleep system) and honestly cant decide which is better.
The plastic frame is very durable and reliable, i for one have had 100+ lbs. of my gear in it with no issues what so ever!!
Thanks for the vid, I didn't know about the Molle Pack w/ Internal Sleep system
I prefer my ALICE pack over the MOLLE pack, it just rides better. The MOLLE straps also slide out and ride right in the points of my shoulders, where my ALICE pack stays tucked in between my pecs and shoulder.
I just spent 339.50 dollars on an xtra large Alice pack with the metal frame ans straps is that too much and also it was new
Had my medium woodland Alice since I was 15 it's still going strong , love it to death and can't beat it
Can you put the ACU bag on the old ALICE pack frame?
not without some modifications.
Strap the Molle system to the Alice, and keep on moving.
my upgrades exactly. alice is very compatible with molle and makes alice a lot better bag.
Would that be an easy setup? I've been considering that but never seen anyone do it.
Hell, I nabbed a barely used MOLLE II Assault Rucksack for only thirty bucks.
A few years back took a medium ALICE with frame on a 24 mile, 4 day camping hike. . . . 38 lbs at the beginning. . . very comfortable. . . . very durable. . . . and plenty of space. . . . they go for as little as $20 on ebay and other sources. . . .
My decision on the two was made after watching a UA-cam video by Iawoodsman, "Packing the Alice Pack". I liked the fact that the three external pouches have an opening behind them (between the pouch and main body) that you can easily slip a camp axe in. I also like the fact that the pack can bu used independent of the frame, something you can't easily do with the MOLLE pack.
I love the ALICE pack one was given to me by a friend that was in Iraq for a while although i do like the ALICE pack a lot and it is a comfortable BUT my shoulder straps are worn and i need new ones. All in All Its a great bag i highly suggest it!!!!
I use the MOLLE II waist belt on mine and It's a terrific upgrade. I have woodland shoulder straps which is better than ORIGINAL OD.
GREAT VIDS
Tom
Thanks for posting this Kevin. I just bought a medium Alice pack w/frame. It is nice to see the comparisons, I am glad that I got the Alice pack.
Where did you spend that much on an Alice pack? I have the largest one and bought it new(military surplus) for $40. Was your pack loaded already?
It is real easy to attach a MOLLE waist belt to the ALICE frame as well as the MOLLE shoulder straps to a ALICE frame. You have a LC2 pack but have the old LC1 straps on it. WHY? At least get matching Woodland LC2 ALICE straps. You can find a matching Woodland MOLLE belt also. This what I have for my Medium setup. I attached my large ALICE system to a MOLLE frame (DEI 1016AC) and added the MOLLE sleep system carrier to it
its so important to having matching camo in a bug out bad You know with the whole survival fashion Nazis and all
the more i see videos on alice packs, the more i want to get one
Thanks for the info. I have used my ALICE for over 12 years.
Buy the radio pouch for inside compartment
Do you trust the Plastic frame????
Yeah ikr
I'm a female. 5'5" 110lbs. What would you suggest I buy for my bug out/weekend camping bag? Should I go with a military style pack? If so, what? Please and thank you!
Take a look at the Molle Assault Pack. Good for about 3 days. A lot smaller than the Molle Ruck that's shown here. Only downside is that it doesn't have a frame. About $50 on eBay with shoulder straps. Also, it actually attaches to the Ruck if you ever want both.
rfcarlson1 ok I'll check it out! Thankyou
Get the Molle medium pack, it’s right in between the assault pack and the Molle large rucksack. It should be just right for you. It has an external frame
Is anyone Offended that ALICE could be Construed as Mysoganistic????
No
ALICE all the way!
Was always a fan of the old Alice packs. Thanks for sharing the comparison vid, I always try to keep up with the newer military gear out of curiousity
for welding alumiunium try welding with a mig set and ali wire with argon gas ,that should see you ok if not tig weld at a auto body shop for a couple of bucks .
