You gotta get the tactical tailor shoulder straps and replace the glide buckles on the main flap with fastex clip buckles. Absolutely necessary upgrades.
You should get one of these that's not your nice one, have them deconstruct it and start your own backpack make it right after this original one but your version! Corporal Kelly's Alice pack! Just an idea !
Good video. Former SF here. My Master Sgt E8 on my ODA (Operational Detachment "A" Team, selected a the Large Alice fo rmy 12 man team. I liked it. He showed us, how big, by putting a whole Army footlocker INSIDE the rut lol. We junior guys were young and great shape so 110 -120 lbs was acceptable. Now, age 71, I struggle with 80, and carry 60 lbs but struggle. Body Armor and ammo is extra. I have a 25 lb pack for my German Sheppard and he carries his med kit and food. Thanks for sharing.
Being a Marine, I always am partial to ALICE. The only thing that comes close is an NVA rucksack I picked up as a souvenir many years ago. That thing has been almost indestructable. Semper Fi.
Great mid-week video Cpl. Kelly. My large Alice pack and frame do not get the workouts they used to. I found a replacement lumbar belt at the surplus store near me. Kaufmans, as recommended by Blackie Thomas. That store has everything..well almost. Hopefully after my next spinal surgery and my healing up process, I'll be able to ruck it up again..( light weight). See you on Sunday. Oh i like the going back to basics Awesome AF.
Hey Shawn, proud to be part of your team. I have your six sir. I’m like a kid in the candy store today. I received my package today a got my Ranger grip 78 green and a compass/map dial tool along with a waxed pouch. But the best is yet to come. My CC hatchet is on the way. Can’t wait. Thank you for all your help support and hard work you share.
Great video, Corporal! Savotta makes good gear. I have a Savotta LJK 202, their most inexpensive pack, and it's built like a tank. I often take it into the woods for scouting or in lieu of a haversack. Buy once, cry once.
Finland makes some awesome equipment. I have one of their assault packs and it's bomb proof, but my favorite is actually their super old surplus Bread Bag that makes an awesome haversack.
The Savotta is a world class piece of gear. I bought the Large pack they offer in the same style and it’s bombproof. Tons of room in their Large pack and it’s built great. You cannot go wrong with the Savotta medium or large.
Former Army Infantry Weapons squad member here. I used that large Alice pack my entire time in the infantry, starting in 1993 at Ft. Campbell, KY and finishing in 2000 in a mech infantry unit in North Carolina. You can cram a TON of stuff in that pack! I never loved it though, but maybe that's because I had to hump it so much! I've got the scars to prove it.
Very good video. I was going through some old b/w photographs (What are those grandpa?) and found a picture of myself dated October 1956 with my very first Trapper Nelson Back Pack. Talk about nostalgia. I used that Trapper Nelson Pack for about 35 years in my forestry career. Wooden frame, duck canvas, metal fasteners, no plastic, no velcro, no zippers, no tubular metal. Simple build and sturdy as hell. I remember that Trapper Nelson being strapped in a canoe, on a pack mule, on a toboggan, strapped on the pontoons of a float plane, thrown in the back of a pickup truck. Minimal maintenance. Used Scotchguard waterproof spray once a year on the duck canvas. Don't know where it is now, but it was my go to packsack for many many years.
I own and use the Savotta Jaakari currently. I have used many others through my life and find it to be the overall best. I paid a lot of money for it and it has been worth the price!
Love my medium Alice packs. Would like to get the Savotta. Thanks for going over the features. I didn't know that Savotta's where around that long. Good to know, thanks, Corporal. 👍🏻
I have used the Medium and Large Alice since Vietnam. I like the versatility and the external frame as the frame can be used to haul things when the pack is removed. I built a shelf for mine (very handy). They are easily "field repaired", parts are still available and I have developed a way to make them extremely water resistant. If, you know how to use and modify the Alice you just can't go wrong.
Richard, Welcome Home Brother . Thank You For Your Time In Service. I still have mine Large ALICE and Medium ALICE Pack and Frames from when I was in U.S.Army. 1979-1986. You can't wear them out.
Corporal, you out did yourself. Here we go again. Another informative video. I've used Miss ALICE for years and I have to admit she's a keeper. But with age come age comes a squeeky body, and a greater desire for comfort. So I put together a USMC ILBE pack from NOS parts and sustainment pouches. I figured for camping and other circumstances a 'greyman' cover would work. I keep it filled with gear, some freezdried vittles, and all I need to add is a change of clothes and I'm set. I don't plan to 'run 'n gun' should things get dicey. But to be able to relocate as quickly as possible is beneficial.
I watch your videos every week. On this video I almost skipped because it didn’t want to watch a review of something I Will not use. However, I was extremely pleased to find that it isn’t a review of the newest and greatest but geared that is tried and true. I thoroughly enjoyed the history lesson of the development and use of these pieces or gear. It’s great to hear of how they were used and customized in the field. In short, this video is awesome. Keep it up. And keep sprinkling the history and your personal knowledge in as well. Thank you for doing these videos.
🎉I enjoy immensely your mind dump education. Using your field experience and historical knowledge to give over to us students your knowledge. That's a sign of a good teacher and mentor. You dont just dismiss the details but explain everything that you think is important for us to know. Thank you CC for your service!🎉🎉
14:50 there's a finnish saying that "if you're poor you should never buy cheap" as in you should invest in quality. I think the Savotta gear still has a lifetime warranty.
Shawn, Outstanding Review on those packs I still got my Large ALICE and Medium ALICE when I was in the U.S. Army 1979-1986 . Thanks for sharing your Time, Wisdom, Experience, Knowledge. Also Thank You For Your Time In Service and Keeping Us Safe..
Thanks for the info. I've learned something. I've used an Alice Pack for decades for hiking but I never knew that top flap was velcroed together. I checked mine and yup, it opens. I also never knew you could slide an axe behind the pouches, I always put a hachet velcroed inside the frame. I also use the cargo shelf.
Cpl K. likely knows but didn't state that the top pouch in the ALICE is for your maps and grid charts, although it will not burn up if you were to stick some energy bars or some GU gels in there
I was never in the military but I did close to five years homeless in Phoenix,AZ and I had an Alice pack and that thing was tough as nails. I would definitely recommend that to anyone who wants an almost bullet proof pack.
Did I hear a turkey? Ooo, Corporal gonna have a good hunting season! Yup I heard it a little closer! Love the gear review! Thanks, Corporal for bringing back lovely, hateful memories of the Alice! You ain’t lying either, love that gear! Hate it too! And it’s indestructible!!! Semper Fi, Marine
This was something different but I really enjoyed it corporal!! Thanks for the pack review. I'm looking for a new one for camping, bushcraft, hiking and overall outdoor use. No matter what I've seen I always came back looking at the alice pack. I love the durability and simplicity of it!!
Shawn, I have been enjoying your video lessons for years, and learn more every week. But this presentation puts you above all the pretend experts out there. Your in depth knowledge of these packs, why and how they evolved, what the purpose of the various different designs, gave me even more respect for you, if that is possible. Thank you for all the hard work you put in, week in and week out!
If you want to love/love your med ALICE might I suggest the molle II wrap around pad/belt moves the weight to your hips. The comfort is incredible the sewing mods minimal. Haven't had a chance to field test mine but walking around the house with load is phenomenal.
I’ve been using that jaakari for about 3ish years. Put a small admin pouch on the front, canteen on the side. Fkn love that thing man. It just works without all the bells and whistles
👍👍👍 Savotta makes good quality gear. I have the Savotta Jääkäri S and am very happy with it. What makes this Pack range so good is it's simplicity .. BUT .. with the ability to be customised as the User requires. The range of accessories available and subsequent different configurations are to be seen to be believed. My little Jääkäri S .. I have added a chest strap, a set of the '4L' Pouches and a 'Beaver Tail'. When I need additional space, I just 'Molle On' the Side Pouches which gives me an additional 8 litres and then the Beaver Tail on the rear of the pack. Often, I just pack gear / whatever inside the Side Pouches and put those pouches inside the Pack, which gives me a nice streamlined exterior. If I require 'in the field' (such as with Grocery Shopping and the original 'list' has been turned into a 'free-for-all' .. 'specials' are not to be walked past if relevant 😁), then the side pouches are then just moved to the outside. The 'Beaver Tail' .. comes in handy for Jackets, Ponchos, Tarps, etc, when not needed at the time .. or a stack of firewood / whatever. When not required, it rolls up small and goes into the pack. A good comparison and not knocking the ALICE System (I have never used it .. different time, different theatre of ops). It looks to have acquitted itself well and judging from it's continuing popularity, will continue to do so. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..
I was in the marine corps in 1979 and the Alice pack is i what got to use and I still have one to this day its tuff and it still does what it was designed to do I don't load it as heavy as I did when I was a young marine in my beloved corps but it holds all my nessary gear and comfort items that I take tent camping or hammock camping I could see using the other pack as well and as they say ya get what ya pay for so I say get the good gear the first time
I will always use my large Alice. I have had it for 30 years. This one in particular 2from my step dad. A retired airforce cornel, he passed some 8 years ago. Love that man
You are actually educating about the various backpacks . I have seen people go out into the forest or desert , telling me they have the ultimate pack . Some people maybe hiked an hour , and we're hiking back to their vehicle saying it was to hard . Maybe they had the wrong equipment.
Back packed when Boy Scouts was teaching you to be a young man, packed with WW I/II donated to the troop Eq. We used packs with frames. I've used frameless packs which when filled (and they have to be filled to fit right) always had a pulling back moment on the body, because of the low of carry (no frame support). You always had the leaning forward moment to deal with. Which means you have a really hard time of keeping your head up and an eyes out ahead of you.. those packs just wares you out over a given amount of time... Frame pack (Mine of VN era) can carry high on my back and it stays there. Even over stuffed ! Usually packed for a 3 night 4 day outings with food and water that I know I need, shelter and clothing for change. Also Med needs for those inevitable cuts and scrapes. Course there are my comms that come packed with the kit. The frame also works really great for motorcycling (adventure riding) , because of the frame... Strapping the pack/frame to the bike really secure and is easy. Only thing you have to come up with is a way to make the pack water proof. I do so inside and out with "super" heavy trash 55 gal bags.. Lashed down well so no flapping in the wind at 60, 65 to 70 mph when you maybe on a paved road, is a trick. In the brush you may want to consider a nylon pack cover(rain cover)... All in all finding a framed pack even in surplus you will pay premium price these days, as now to justify price, are labeled as vintage attire...(total BS). I've had this pack for years and it last because it was meant to go through war.. other frameless packs....always failed after several uses ... When I see zipper, Velcro I know it pretty much a throw away item...they just do not hold up. I've seen people that spent up to a K on a 15.85 gal (60 liters) pack to have it fail on the first day out. Then try to collect warranty off an argumentative purveyor. That just doesn't work for me. But, there is/are plenty of Surplus dealers (eBay being the best in price and OEM) on line, Amazon, not so much(usually knock off Chi-junk)... Rock on ...
I've never served in the military but my uncle and neighbor who did use to give me bdu and gear all the time when I was a kid to go camping still have it all including my NOS alice pack
I had the original ALICE pack. Like you said you learned to have a love/hate relationship with it. But it was functional once you figured it out. 78-83 Semper Fi
You basically sold me on the savotta I love that backpack comfy plenty of space well padded for long hikes definitely durable and also withstands alot of weight easily get all your kit in there for a shtf situation long term bug out bag only thing not in mine is a turnakit.
I'm watching Your videos since few years now. And You have had a good feeling with going to the roots. I misses that a bit too. Though Your latest videos are of a better quality (not mentioning the video) of reviews/skills descriptions which is great. Along with Your videos I started to look for simplicity through the years. Savotta M is a perfect example. Keep the excellent work. I like military surplus, but in my region of europe it is easier to find savotta than US surplus in a good shape, so savotta it is:)
Been a huge fan of the Savotta Medium pack for the last year, I had the small version before but decided I wanted/needed more space. Added some medium pouches and an emergency pouch on the front and got the inner frame. Good stuff and quite durable!
Which ones? I also own 3 Savotta backpacks. Namely: [] Hatka [] Jääkäri S (with the optional Multi-PurPose Foam Mat) [] Jääkäri XL The Jääkäri S I use daily. The jääkäri XL is the beast for backpacking (before anyone starts ... yes! It is super heavy). The Hatka is the odd one out. But I like it as a feature to attach it to the jääkäri XL. Or simply as a smaller version in place of the Jääkäri S.
@@wimahlers I have the Jaakari small the black and the green and the Jaakari medium. I bough them at canadian outdoor equipment . I use them for traveling , running , hiking and going home bag for the car in case of emergency. :)
What you have there is a Small/Med, I have the same set up but in Large/Medium! Mine has 3 small pockets below the 3 large pouches on the back!! I carried a Savotta back in the 80's(or the 90's) I did not care for it! Granted it was not that model (no idea what model it was). I much prefer my ALICE pack! As a backup I much preferred the British Ruck pack! There is a difference between a Catapult and a Trebuchet ( Catapult has a Pocket that launches your ballistic, using a tension system, the Trebuchet has a pocket attached to rope or chain then launched using a counterbalance (weight) system! I retired in 2006 with 30.5 years of service in the U.S. Army! Dec 1975 - May 2006
Rad video, I just picked up an Alice pack and put the Molle 2 waste belt and shoulder straps on it. It’s a hell of a hack you might wanna try. Just needed an extra foot (6” each side) of the webbing to attach the straps to the frame and it’s good to go!
@ I’ll be the devil advocate here and bet you having chapters and a rebrand (name change or buckle down on RECALL) but fr, a few things would help you feel and be more credible and serious and people would come and sty and sub and watch every video that interested them because they started by liking the WAY you do something, the way you do ONE thing is usually how we do EVERYTHING.
Thank you for showing and explaining these packs. You cov3red a lot of information. Being non military, I have never seen these packs in person. Now I can figure out which will work best for me.
Not just a simple gear review. Explanations of how and why. You can watch gear reviews everywhere but have those people sweated and actually used these. Thx
Just me- durability overrides all other factors. If you've ever been way the eff out in the sticks and had crucial gear crap out on you, you'll agree. I've had shoulder straps pull loose from lesser rucks, and a fairly expensive pair of boots come undone while out and about in BFE. Neither was field-repairable. Just had to gut it out and trudge back to basecamp
I love the Alice👍🇺🇸 Scandinavian packs are made skinny for cross country skiing. Plenty of room for arm movement. Well thought out just like Alice. I think both are phenomenal choices.
Good vid. I was in the Corps from 88-92. I have had and used an alice pack ever since. Recently I bought a jakkari S as I felt I wanted the alice durability but not be so bulky or "GI". I went with the "S" as it had no zipper. I added grommets and drawstring at the top and may do two 4L side pouches. Truth is on that tho, Iam getting older and lighter is better. My dad, at 75, still uses his two pocket cotton canvas arvn pack he drug home from Nam in '69, for pogie bait and drinks while deer hunting.

I can't describe how much I love my Savotta gear. The fellas across the Baltic Ocean sure know their stuff!!
Have had the Savotta Jaakari M for about 5 years now and it's great. Genuinely brilliant.

Finland makes some awesome equipment. I have one of their assault packs and it's bomb proof, but my favorite is actually their super old surplus Bread Bag that makes an awesome haversack.
LC-1s have small D-rings in the bottom of the main pouch. You can use those D-rings to shrink the pack down to a small assault pack.
I've done it with a Rothco LC2. Just use the frame mounting straps on the horizontal bar patches. It carries high, but works.
The Savotta is a world class piece of gear. I bought the Large pack they offer in the same style and it’s bombproof. Tons of room in their Large pack and it’s built great. You cannot go wrong with the Savotta medium or large.

Love Alice dearly, but Savotta makes a killer pack for real.
UA-cam must really like this video, top of recommendations today. 🎉
they were drunk

Really enjoy the gear reviews!
Love catching up and learning a new technique thanks for the work you put into the loadouts etc.

love the t shirt pal!the band is awesome too!love your content
I'm watching Your videos since few years now. And You have had a good feeling with going to the roots. I misses that a bit too. Though Your latest videos are of a better quality (not mentioning the video) of reviews/skills descriptions which is great. Along with Your videos I started to look for simplicity through the years. Savotta M is a perfect example. Keep the excellent work. I like military surplus, but in my region of europe it is easier to find savotta than US surplus in a good shape, so savotta it is:)
I've got an A.l.i.c lc2 large and I use it for bushcraft and I love it
Loving vids like this.
Excellent review! Thank you. I love a good backpack.
I love my Savotta!
I can vouch for the Savotta. Bought one after your first review years ago. Good to go!
I have that second pack in black I use it for walking on the trails in my town.
Alice pack for me. It served me well for years and carry on. Plus, you have the frame for any scenario.
Been a huge fan of the Savotta Medium pack for the last year, I had the small version before but decided I wanted/needed more space. Added some medium pouches and an emergency pouch on the front and got the inner frame. Good stuff and quite durable!
Good info
I have 3 Savotta backpack ,they are very well made , nice review
Which ones?
I also own 3 Savotta backpacks. Namely:
[] Hatka
[] Jääkäri S (with the optional Multi-PurPose Foam Mat)
[] Jääkäri XL
The Jääkäri S I use daily.
Very interesting. Live the way you teach very easy to follow.
The savotta is just amazing 😍
How well you timed the thunder at your sign-off. How did you do that? Scary! Lol.
Unless I had a hallucination,
there was a turkey gobbling
at one point
Army! Dec 1975 - May 2006
Savotta is very comfortable, wouldn't trade it for any other.
A true inspiration just for the sheer volume and consistency of content ✌️
Rad video, I just picked up an Alice pack and put the Molle 2 waste belt and shoulder straps on it. It’s a hell of a hack you might wanna try. Just needed an extra foot (6” each side) of the webbing to attach the straps to the frame and it’s good to go!
Just ordered the jaakari brother thanknyou for showing that seems lile a awesome pack cant wait to get it
I would prefer to support the Finnish company. Years ago I met some people that worked for Valmet of Finland and was very impressed with them.
my only recommendation is ADD CHAPTERS!
love this info! thank you
will leave it the way it is, most cant bare to watch so extra work is just a waste at this point
Thx
Packs from back in the years of old combat still function
Just me- durability overrides
all other factors.
If you've ever been way the eff
out in the sticks and had crucial gear crap out on you,
you'll agree.
I've had shoulder straps pull
loose from lesser rucks, and
a fairly expensive pair of
boots come undone while out
and about in BFE.
Neither was field-repairable.
Just had to gut it out and
trudge back to basecamp
I have all sizes of the Jääkäri pack and they are built to standard above all others.
I’m the same with you, Mr. K. You were one of my first channels I watched and I still love you, even though I have been playing away for a bit 😊
😁👍🏼
