  • Ruckdiculousness 9! The MOLLE 4,000! Howdy Folks! It's Time For A Little More Ruckdiculousness! A recent eBay find of an experimental rucksack designed for The U.S. Army Airborne became an instant purchase! After several months of using the pack I have learned much about it.
The MOLLE 4,000 that I purchased was a "Test Item" which led to the full production "Issue" item currently in use by Airborne forces of the U.S. Army. I will share all I have learned about this Ruckdiculously Awesome pack and will discuss the differences between the "Test Item" and the Issue Pack. I will also do a comparison an contrast of the MOLLE 4,000 and other packs I own and have used extensively.

    Great find, Brother !!!
That bottom compartment, I would use for a tarp, and Ranger Roll, maybe even a hammock, storage AO....just for expediency in setting up and tearing down.....ridgelines, tent pegs, and bungees too.
    Just my idea.
Keep up the great work !!!

Got one with air items. Recently picked up the improved molle ruck 4000. It has 2 pockets at the bottom on the sides and has 3 small pockets at the top identical to the top pockets on the large Alice pack. Already packed out as my to go bag
Actually the side pockets are larger than you state they will hold a good fair amount of equipment. Until you get your hands on one don't understate the size of the pockets

So I have found that the 1606 frame position is not ideal for load-lifters. They become more "load-adjusters" with not much lifting involved because the straps run more or less horizontal from the shoulder strap to the frame, sometimes downwards to the frame depending on your height etc. None of which is ideal for getting the actual desired lifting effect.
A solution, and this works equally for the ALICE pack, is to get a rigger or cobbler to sew two webbing loops onto the top of the pack itself using existing webbing as a re-inforcing panel with the ladderlocks attached. This gives the LLs a couple of inches extra height when the pack is fully loaded and creates that imnportant upwards angle. An added benefit is that the LLs can be made to run exacly in line with the straps and not angle awkwardly inwards. These little changes have a major impact on tthe carrying comfort.

Greetings- That is a real cool find you have there. I have a Molle II 3 day assault pack which Im getting ready to dye after watching a video of yours and others in regards to dying ACU. I plan on using the Molle 3 day assault pack as my main day pack. I use a large Alice pack for my 3 day minimum pack on the old metal frame. I like seeing some of the stuff they have these days, but I have to be honest- The absolute best pack ever made was the Alice IMHO. Ive done road marches and patrols with the Alice and the Molle II, and in a tactical environment, the squeaking of plastic frames is a definite NO-GO. That being said, it all boils down to personal preference- Good video-

I don't really like a top-load pack which that's what I have now but I am learning to use small pouches to compartmentalize my equipment which does make it easier to get what I want out but I do so love a front load pack and it seems to me that they're kind of hard to find but if I keep looking I'm sure I will find one. Thanks for the video and keep them coming. I hope things are getting better for you because you seem just a little happier, especially when you get a new pack. Stay safe out there

    • @boonedockery7220

My favorite style of pack will have top and front or side access. Especially for backpacking. If I'm just hiking to a camp site that I'll stay at for a few days, I'm good with a top loader. Compartmentalizing my kit has become a must for me. I can't imagine not being able to do that anymore.
Things at home are still not great, but I have had to learn to deal with it all and steal away time as I need to (just takes a good bit of planning). Since chaos has become the "routine" I've had to build my other "routines" into the chaos. It has taken a while, but with the Lords Help, we're doing the absolute best we can given our situation. I Praise The Father For Showing Me A Way! It sure wasn't me, I ain't that smart! HAHAHAhahahaaaaaa!!!!!
Brother, I pray you have a fantastic evening! Vigilance Unwavering Brother!

the drag/carry handle is that large (I think) because when they rig it for airborne, they run the shoulder straps and the air harness through the drag/carry handle -- there are 6 videos or so on here that show how to rig it (I have this pack as well, no frame or straps because I have others that I am using on mine)

Supposedly these are going to eventually replace the old large MOLLE 2 (MOLLE 5000) ruck for everyone. While I think the 1606 frame is better overall I suspect there's going to be a disconnect somewhere between established packing lists and the reduced capacity of these newer packs within the army.

smaller rucks doesn't necessarily mean less gear and more comfort,it will probably be even more difficult now to carry all your required stuff in the field, also,i dont really see a problem with the molle 2,sure, the frame was plastic and complicated as hell to set up but it was a sturdy, big and reliable with the possibility to make it smaller thanks to the big ass straps, but hey, this means we are gonna see a lot of ocp/multicam molle 2 rucks for the cheap in the surplus market, anyway, alice was better

Compared to the first gen MOLLE pack the MOLLE II is almost "light weight"! I have assembled a complete OCP MOLLE II and have purchased 2 UCP MOLLE II packs for future projects/videos. From my test patrols, It's a pretty nice pack! The Venerable ALICE packs (Dear To My Heart) lacked two crucial features.... Load adjusters and a bend of the frame at the base of the neck. IMHO...

Hi John, I’m Infantry from 82nd, I wonder can you try to put THOR’s frame or NICE frame on this ruck and see how it works?
So those mag pouch on the top of issue Molle 4k, doesn’t even fit single 556mag properly in there, it doesn’t not fit double mags, the mag will fallout easily.

    • @boonedockery7220

I haven't tried either THOR nor Nice frames with it. I will have to look at them for feasibility. I think the inspectors are getting lazy. I have acquired a few "NEW" USGI pouches recently and the construction quality was obviously NOT what it should have been. I purchased a 3 mag M4 side pouch and one of the end pockets is too narrow to facilitate a magazine (even issue aluminum mags). This is completely unacceptable!
