Thank you for the video - fun to watch and very useful. I prefer to record two concurrent audio sources: one of the radio comm and the other of the ambient in-cockpit engine sound. Then, in post processing, i can mix the two audio sources however i want to: clean comm radio only, ambient engine sound only, or a mix of the two at any level. Surely overkill for my cheap videos and more time processing, but fun.
The problem is, when you slow the shutter speed that allows in more light, which will result in a washed out video or photo. The ND filter is needed to reduce the light getting in.

I never thought about the lab mic...and I own two of them, I will try it this weekend.
Please consider trying out a single-axis gyroscopic mount for an in-cockpit camera. They provide some really interesting perspective of bank (or pitch, or both if there is a gyro for each axis). Instead of a rigid camera mount with a fixed view, the camera remains on the horizontal plane while the plane banks. This gives some cool perpectives as the horizon stays "horizontal" while the plane banks (i tried it and really liked the effect)
Only one thing I don't understand: the 6.5mm jack that goes into the airplane headphone output, normally (as is any aviation headphone jack) is of the MONO type (ie with a single black ring at the tip). Why is the jack of the splitter you use stereo instead? Doesn't matter, maybe? Does it work the same? Thank you very much.
Are you planning to make video about battery life of action cams? There are very few cameras that can make video of 2 hrs and these are not GoPro nor Garmin, unfortunately.
Thanks for the informative video, just have a question about the video editor you use that appeared in the video to mix video and audio, what is it and if there is any other options you recommend?
Hey Paul. Garmin's new aviation cable for the VIRB Ultra 30 has the USB plug right on it. No need for the adapter you showed in the video. VERY unfortunately, they don't have the power input like the NFlightCam cable does. The NFlightCam folks say their cable won't work on the Garmins, and they don't plan to make one that will.
Hi, great video! Do you know where I can get the cable at 1:20? Or is it only in the Garmin VIRB aviation bundle? I'm gonna mount my gopro hero 4 in the cockpit of a Piper Archer III, so I need a way to get the audio, and that cable is perfect!

I'm trying to find the "u mic" you refer to in the video but having no luck. How is "u- mic" spelt? I've tried every version I can think of an can't find it on Amazon or anywhere else. Thanks for the vid! You do a great job with these.
3:58 have you tested this method, with lav fed through noise-cancelling monitors and external recorder, vs directly recording from lav clipped/taped to you and educing noise in post? thanks
Lavaliere microphone is a misnomer. It's a body mike, lapel mike, miniature mike, or clip-on mike. If the mike is clipped onto a cord or chain (lavaliere means gold chain) and hung around the neck then it's truly a lavaliere microphone configuration.
So are u gliding that cub everytime you were recording? I dont think that throttle looks like it will go back any further. Informative video otherwise 👍
I hate Piper Cubs. They fly like crap. No power, the controls don't work at all, ailerons are dead and the plane is totally blind. It's a crappy airplane.
That comment about a clap to sync the audio was brilliant! So simple! Thanks!

Cutting out a customized lens-fit from a sheet of ND is a great alternative. Fine tips, Paul!
Ah, the sound from the audio recorder was so smooth and clean!
2:30 - and then the iPhone 7 came out and took this away :P
I'd love to see a video comparing the Garmin virb to the Gopro from an aviation perspective.
I love your videos by the way.
sometimesifly_ he did that a while ago....... well done......
Great Job....Dr J
I was wondering how those ‘prop filters’ work, thanks for explaining that.
Really clear and concise communication:) Cheers!
You can select a chosen shutter speed on GoPros, with the newest firmware update - no ND filter needed!
The problem is, when you slow the shutter speed that allows in more light, which will result in a washed out video or photo. The ND filter is needed to reduce the light getting in.

Great video Paul, really well done
You can match impedances with line matching transformers.
pswooley That would also correct the noise from the nFlightCam cable with ship's power by blocking DC on the audio line.
just what i was searching for! thank you paul
This was such a helpful video! TONS of useful information. Thank you!
12:58 am, 6-20-18. I'm 2 hours early, I better come back.
This was very helpful! i was about to spend money on fancy stuff but i already have a lav mic that works with my ipad!

Love the music, let's get more of that! :p

No. I clicked on your video at six in the morning.😂

Nice vid, especially that first bit :-)

They show one on their website releasing next month.
Awesome! Thank you. That's going to make things SO much easier.
THANK YOU! 👍👍👍
I Noticed a Pan under the Engine. Is there a Drip?
Great video! Could tell me please what software you use to sync your audio with the video? Thanks!

Look at that wire holding that door shut. I think I'd be working that first

Doesnt Garmin allow for Blue Tooth audio?

YouMic
AVweb thanks!
The headset's mic give you a return through the earcups? if not the lav mic wouldn't work.
Nothing will work without sidetone. The audio system generates it.
All the Cub videos were shot at best glide speed?
could not find 2 stop nd film on amazon u would have the part no did find nd filter ie the rings that screw on lens but no nd sheet material
do you have the part number of 2stop nd film sheet material that you used in audio video
I hate how accurate that intro was.
3:58 have you tested this method, with lav fed through noise-cancelling monitors and external recorder, vs directly recording from lav clipped/taped to you and educing noise in post? thanks
Not sure what you mean by noise cancelling monitors. I usually don't have to apply audio filters in post. And overtime I try, I seem to make it worse.
Hi Paul - Have you tried the use of the Bluetooth connection between an Ultra 30 and a Lightspeed or Bose headset? Might that be a good alternative?
Yes. It works, but I'm not sure how reliably. It burns through the battery.
If this is a prop filter than isn't a prop a bird filter?
what mic are you using when you're sitting on the table?
Is he idling in flight, that throttle lever appears closed?!
Aviation Videos and Humor?
Actually, it's 3:51 AM, not 3 AM, but not a bad guess.

Using a phone to call people? How quaint :-)
What's wrong with metalcore?
Video explaining importance of good audio has bad audio.... Consider turning down the com volume to stop clipping.
LMAO one of your better videos. And your right on the Ram Mount for the Iphone. Pretty shaky.
So are u gliding that cub everytime you were recording? I dont think that throttle looks like it will go back any further.
Informative video otherwise 👍
You used the terms jack and plug interchangeably. Please be correct.
Come on man... Bossa Nova is not "worse", it's really good music...
Bad sound (breath-popping and plosives).
