What I love about Internet Historian is the work that goes behind these kinds of videos. Many other creators on any number of sites would simply read over the wiki and a couple news articles and simply put together a short video with some funny commentary and visuals to post and make a quick buck. As you can tell from the timeline, specific details like the rudder, black-box transcripts, and acknowledgment of mistakes made in this q&a that a lot of effort goes into it. Behind the layer of memes and jokes there is really substance and research that went into telling a real story with real details and not overexagerating for views or misrepresenting the truth. Even going so far as to play devil's advocate for the captain. It is real history, real research, real stories, and that is what makes Internet Historian so good.

Navy being dispatched isn't an indication of much. If an SOS is sent out every boat in range legally has to respond. If a fishing boat was nearby that boat legally has to respond.
Well, yeah. There's that. Same with the Fire department, since it's technically part of their job(search and rescue/paramedics).
That said, the fact that they even scrambled the Federal Police, AND the *Air Force,* shows how out of hand this got.
The protection of life and safety protocols on the seas. If you're ship is going down you want everyone to come help. And you do the same in kind.
To be fair, the Italian navy has a track record of being ineffective.
05:11 Uh, sorry to burst your hopes, but no, the reason electrics are on the same 'floor' as the generators, on cruising ships, is to have more rooms for passengers and 'money sucking traps'.
Non-cruising ships (both military and civilians, like cargo ships), that don't have to cater to the whims of the tourist industry, have the electric system-housing compartment way above the 'generators' floor'.

And at least Military vessels have the generators separate so that if one in hit in battle you're less likely to lose both
Yup! It's in the bottom so there's more room for passengers. The super tall structure (they're limited on width because of things like panama canal access etc) already makes them unstable and require active stability ballast tanks that pump water around to keep the ship from tipping. Placing all the heavy equipment in the bottom is good for stability but it's no where near enough because of how tall these dumb ships are these days.
8:10 That is beyond terrifying because the ocean is basically a giant superconductor. If that water got high enough for an electric charge to cross through, every person in that room would have been frying like a pork sausage.
It’s a vital part of good streaming to have good chat interaction, and I love that you have this good rapport, it’s one of the things I enjoy most about your reacts, but I want to share constructive feedback that sometimes it feels like your attention is being taken away from the video at a rate that breaks the flow of information. It doesn’t happen too much, but in small pockets I feel like you miss a chunk because of chat stuff.
I would maybe suggest making a regular habit of rewinding videos a couple of ticks before unpausing them (like when you went back for the duck boat crash). That would help keep the context of what’s on screen.
I don’t want to come off like I’m telling you what to do btw, I just had some thoughts while watching and I know you’re open to feedback, so I went for it 😅

I don't know ship blueprints, but lets go small scale for a tutorial. Kayaks come in 2 designs, sit inside and sit on top. A sit inside kayak will usually tip less unless the sit on top is wider. Being wider creates more drag in the water. Your center of gravity is higher on a sit on top. This can be mitigated by stowing equipment inside the hull to lower the center of gravity again.
Now, the center of gravity is also important bow to stern as well. If the bow rides too high or too low then it makes it incredibly hard to stear.
All these issues in a 50 lb hull with a 300lb weight limit. Now scale that up to a SMALL FLOATING CITY.
Among the compartments, the ones that the engines are in are also, logically, the safest. The only reason you'd think of changing them is the bias formed from the Concordia being such a major failure.
If they're in the frontmost compartments a head on collision may break them, and the middle to back compartments are more likely to be hit from a late turn. The critical compartments only got hit from the failed attempt at swinging around the rock caused by the helmsman not understanding.

It seems to me that when your second language is English, it does not seem like a remarkable achievement, since English is so widespread and "needed" for adequate navigation of most of the Internet.
I always got terrible grades in English and all the time in school and college I believed that it was impossible for me to learn a second language. As a result, having finished my education knowing 10 words in English, I started watching PewDiePie with subtitles (his videos have subtitles in so many languages...) and then some shows, and then reactions on UA-cam. As a result, a couple of years later, I notice that my entire UA-cam homepage is covered in English and it is often faster to think in English simply because of the design of the language.
I think I'm so used to it that I don't think about how little people I know, with whom I can discuss something from English-speaking UA-cam etc.

Nautical Expert Water Man is of the opinion that cruise ships are poorly designed in order to fit all of those luxury features at the cost of safety. And I can't help but agree. I'm not an engineer, but I know a bit about physics and his argument was sound and its profit before lives in capitalism. Don't go cruising bois.
I'm not a ship designer, but I'd split the regular engines as far apart as I could get away with. Just reduce the odds that all is lost at once.
They just needed to find the water source block and pick it up with a bucket.
26:40 I can actually understand how people miss it. It's small-ish text on a moving background with a lot of white, and it's only up there for a couple of seconds. Especially for (decent) reactors who have to kind of divide their efforts between watching and actually giving their input, it could be easy to miss, while you're shocked for the moment where you think it's real.
5:00 I’ll preface this by saying I didn’t build the ship so I’m not sure the exact reason as to why the engines were all bunched together but, as an engineer, my best bet would be cost cutting, not the weight of the engines itself.
There might be a small efficiency gain to having them all at the bottom in the back, but it’s probably minimal, and the weight point is definitely a non issue. Buoyancy doesn’t really care about a ship’s mass, the important factor is it’s volume. As long as it’s big enough and hollow enough, anything can float. Doesn’t matter if it’s 10 pounds or 10 million pounds, the ocean has more than enough water to disperse the weight!
So yeah cost cutting makes the most sense, having the engines close to the propulsion systems reduces the amount of high voltage wires that you have to run.

Before we get into the accident, we have to talk about the company providing the tours, as well as the vehicle involved-Ride the Ducks and the WWII US Army Ducks.
Founded just after WWII by a vet from Milwaukee who figured it’d be a great idea to start doing paid tours using surplus Ducks, they’re generally the face of these types of tours…and are infamous for being negligent in terms of maintenance. The Ducks don’t exactly help-originally intended as a stopgap measure until more sophisticated vehicles could be used (see the M3 Lee), the Army accidentally created an indispensable vehicle-due to the state of the War, both in Europe and the Pacific, the ducks were perfect for environments where typical landing craft couldn’t land, either because they weren’t designed to, or because the harbor was shot to shit. These vehicles from 1943 are the same ones used for the tours.
This deadly combination has resulted in several accidents over the years, occasionally resulting in fatalities. Take your pick-losing control on the freeway and plowing into the side of a Greyhound, being swamped by a severe storm while trying to end the tour, attempting to pull a turn to face a wave only to end up in a situation similar to the Sewol, you probably get the idea. So, naturally, this incident does have some negligence-the boat had some smoke coming out of it’s engines, so the Captain stopped the boat, in the middle of the river no less, to prevent a fire.
Thing is, Ride the Ducks is *not* at fault for the incident.
What happened was that a tugboat, pushing a barge through the Delaware River, accidentally ran over the boat, causing it to sink. It emerged that the guy who was supposed to be on lookout had been occupied with a family emergency, and effectively left his post, without notifying anyone, and moving to a room somewhere else on the ship to better concentrate on this matter. The guy did get a prison sentence, and if I recall correctly they decided to add two watchmen per shift to prevent this from happening, but the local Ride the Ducks had to close its doors a few years later following increased premiums.
It’s an absolute miracle that no one else died from this incident.
I rode the Ducks in the Dells back in the day. It is sad to see them in such disrepair and used improperly.

Speaking about languages, i can speak/read English/Spanish but i have such a weird accent it's a thing in between, mostly because since i was 4 years old i been traveling between Canada and Chile so sometimes people can't understand me. :x
The electrical panel and emergency stuff usually aren't on the bottom. They're usually on an upper level... so they don't get flooded in this instance. Cruise ships keep them in the bottom, because it's unsightly if it's on an upper level where the guests could potentially see it.
You know... the usual stupid reason for a huge failure.
I'm dutch and yeah it sucks. It's just worse sounding german. There is a reason so many of us know english.
