The thing about the Porsche Taycan is that it’s a great car - not just a great electric car. The Taycan is the first EV we have tested that shows true depth of engineering. Perhaps it isn’t a surprise that it is a Porsche - a brand that doesn’t generally adopt new technology for the sake of it. Still, like all cars, the Taycan isn’t perfect. Its electricity consumption is high and the range could be better. But the propulsion, ride, handling, interior and packaging are all superb.
Should you consider jumping in and buying a Porsche Taycan? Is the 2021 Taycan 4S the best spec? Is it worth spending more on the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S? Or is the new base RWD version the purest form? What about the Cross Turismo? What about a Tesla Model S? So many questions.
In today’s video, Tom Baker conducts a detailed review of the 2021 Porsche Taycan in 4S AWD Performance Plus guise to give you clear insights about this vehicle.

Since this review was filmed, Porsche have announced two new entry-level Taycans for Australia, meaning the range now starts at $156,300.
And even cheaper with the EV subsidy and free rego.. Oh.. hang on...
No subsidy for the premium EVs, though stamp duty will eventually be eliminated for them. Makes sense to start with the affordable stuff, doesn’t it?
Yeah I just learned the news from this channel. The drivesaway price is from 170K and it is slow as the Model 3 SR+ which could be bought at least 100K cheaper.
Never been a Porsche fan but have to admit whatever they decide to do, they do it best!
Right. It does feel properly well considered.
You've never been a porsche fan because you've never driven one
@@daggermouth4695 Wrong! My dad has a Cayman. My brother has a Cayenne. I've driven both. I just feel more comfortable in a BMW.
Thoroughly enjoyed that Tom! And I enjoyed watching you spec your car all the while thinking gee I hope lotto comes my way one day so I can do that for real! 😂 Top stuff as always mate..
Love this design, nothing says EV about it. Effortlessly cool!
Good way to put it, Koji.
Great review 👍
Amazing car! Great review.
I saw an April fools day drawing of a 2 door cross turismo like a Ferrari GTC4 / Lancia HPE style. Looked fantastic. Until then the four door would do just fine. Great review as always. The new spec section is a good addition.
Enjoyed the customisation section.. had to try myself.. great video!!
Thanks, Malcolm! I enjoyed doing it.
If you can indicate price range of insurance for each car you review would be very interesting. I know it's difficult to do it because depend on where you live, where you keep your car, etc. but..... Because when I insured my 2020 Subaru Outback I found more than $100 cheaper than 2019 model and it was about $300 cheaper than my previous car 2015 VW Golf.
We do that whenever we have enough data to do so.
Best electric car ever made and it's Porsche's first attempt.
That's how Porsche does things, they only get in the mix if they feel they'll do it best. And they always do.
Increasing the range is probably all there is left to wish for, in this car.
No Budget Direct estimate for the insurance of the Porsche Tom? Will be interesting to see what it is.
What about the other models, their battery sizes and ranges? 370 km is not enough for Oz.
The colour though 😍
I know I am old-fashioned. But I always prefer a car company building a car-like EV, rather than a tech company building a gadget-like EV. Great job Porsche, and great review, Tom!
We like what we like. Porsche have clearly studied this segment and put the hard yards in to create a very good car.
That colour is rather fetching great review Tom
Thanks!
Amazing car, unlikely to catch on here in South Africa since there's absolutely no infrastructure apart from a few forward thinking employers. I'm glad Porsche decided to take on Tesla, will force all the competitors to up their game.
That's crazy, 12 hours of blazing sunshine and extreme coastal winds could provide so much renewable energy. The corporates can only do so much, governments are the only ones who can make it happen.
South Africa has no power (but used to have) at least half the time. Accept walking /Taxi or ICE vehicles indefinitely.
I really liked how you built the car to your taste, although you chose the make of car with probably the most options over all the others 😅
And one of the best configurators! Made the job easy…
Love it how you go from this then tomorrow it’s a Suzuki swift haha
I enjoy driving and reviewing all cars.
@@chasingcars I enjoy all your reviews thoroughly, thank you 🙏
Nice spec, Tom. Except I wouldn't take the roof rails and YOU MISSED THE WOOD TRIM!!!!
The wood only seems to be applied to the doors… not enough wood!
Model S plaid vs Taycan next!
Good review. Not sure about the looks of the front but a great car in any case.
Fair enough. Looks are subjective. Great underpinnings though.
I've seen a few out in the wild now and I only like it in black because it hides the details but shows the overall silhouette. Audi E-Tron GT probably looks better.
Fair enough. Though I quite like the details!
Back is really nice but i cant say same thing for front
All that spec’ing Tom and you’ve forgotten to tick the most important box. RHD. 😜
Mind boggles as to why they haven’t created a RHD configuration option.
Also Tom!
Check those messages!
Tom, what was the comment re the "black on black depreciation"? Would you advice people to not do black for interior and exterior?
Black on black is great for limiting depreciation - it’s a spec lots of people want. My comment was that buying a great car in a boring spec because you intend to limit depreciation is a little depressing.
@@chasingcars LOL. Good news is I am one of those people. Bad new is you called me boring. Kidding. Appreciate the advice. Your thoughts on the state gray interior?
If you like black-on-black, great! I’d just never do it in order to please the second owner.
I have both a TESLA model s LR and a Porsche Taycan 4S and the Porsche is a much better car in every way except transporting all my kids and luggage. Even a trip through Germany is quicker in the Taycan because of the Quick charging and relatively low consumption during high speed crusing.
I’ve entered a competition which has one of these as a major prize. First prize is a house, but I want to win the Porsche (my only chance)
If you win you’ll like it very much.
So when's your taycan arriving Tom
When I smash the piggy bank!
Would you say that build quality is on a par with Lexus?
This car didn’t have any quality issues. I’d need to test a larger sample size before giving you a definitive answer.
Why would I get an electric vehicle when the charging station costs as much as petrol?
Well, that’s false. Public charging costs about half the price of petrol in Australia. Charging at home costs about one third the price of petrol.
With just hearing our wiz-bang aussie NSW budget tonight...
"those who purchase an eligible electric car under ...........$78,000 will have stamp duty waived when transferring the registration into their name"
Eventually that stamp duty will be abolished even on premium EVs - but only when the road user charge comes in in 2027 or when BEVs make up 30% of new car sales.
There's always next years whiz-bang-budget Tom!!!!
What's with Porsche and weird coloured media cars? They do this globally.
Weird considering they do actually have some great colours (not that anyone would know via Porsche).
Returning to their 80's interior matching exterior colours isn't going to age well.
Well, it’s subjective. As I said in the Tom Spec chapter I’d go with Cherry Metallic, but I must say, the baby blue grew on me. Big time. Lots of personality.
Sounds nice but !! How much?? 😅🤣
You mean the Taycan is better than the MG EV?
I know which one I’d prefer to have my wife park at Westfield… 😂
Hmmmm
Hay bro I drive a ford festa
I cry that such brands are ev , the essence of motoring ends with ev
Haha! Okay Boomer.
While the car looks nice, I'd choose Tesla S over this Tycan. The Tesla is in different league.
The league of range, sure. But not any other league.
@@chasingcars Tesla S and Tesla S Plaid are much faster than these Porsches for 0-100km/h.
@@EastWood2004 This is what many people don't understand. The Taycan is way more sportier than the Model S. If a car is quicker than the other does not mean it is more fun to drive. A 911 turbo S is quicker but the 911 gt3 is more fun to drive
@@vandita3695 I agree that the ICE Porsche is more fun but I pointed the Tycan is not technologically advanced as what Tesla has developed given the prices. Tesla has introduced new motor which handles up to 320km/h but Porsche couldn’t do so they deployed the 2 speed gear. The air friction co-eff of the Model S is superior, too.
If Tesla aren’t pulling apart the suspension of the Taycan to figure out how the car rides and handles as well as it does, they’re in trouble.
Needs to lose 300 kg and be more like crossover (eg. Model y).
Haha! Why would they want to make it taller?
I don't want it to be a crossover! Either way, the next-gen Macan will be electric (on a new platform), while the current-gen ICE version on MLB will persist with a facelift.
Nice car but tesla killer is just bullshit propaganda that car companies don’t need and should be ashamed of,talk about the fact that it costs 50000 dollars more minimum, that’s a pretty killing fact
