    Wow. I'm a long-time photographer with an R6 and I have been wanting so badly to get into some light videography to be able to add value to my photoshoots. Like little cinematic videos. But for someone who has NO CLUE about ANYTHING video-related, so many videos just jump the gun assuming foundational knowledge. Your videos break down these concepts to clear away the fog and I'm getting a little bit of knowledge. Thank you so much!

    Playing with my canon makes me appreciate my cinema camera more. Ive gotten spoiled being able to adjust the raw in post even if iso and white balance were not on point. I cant get a clean image out of the r6 to save my life…its taking forever.😂

      I'm a bit confused by your question. Are you referring to Final Cut's built in LUTs or the color editing? The LUTs for Canon Log 1, 2 & 3 should automatically be available to you. If you have trouble seeing it, maybe scroll to the bottom and use "Extended".

    Thanks for the great video! I'm a newbie and shot in Clog 3 on the Canon EOS R7. I'm having importing issues and can't find a solution to why all videos are not successfully imported. (NOTE: I try importing using a USB C directly from my camera to my Macbook Pro M1) Is it the editing software that isn't supported? All I have is iMovie. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

      I honestly have never transferred via usb c only. That being said, I bet there’s a communication issue with the canon software and Apple software. I bet there is a canon app that allows you to upload them. My solution would be to pull that sd card out and stick it into your Mac. Easiest way to do it.

    please can i get a one on one conversation,,,i am really struggling with the log3 noise.... i do not know what to do and i got the r8 solely to shoot really clean videos and color grade on them but it really breaks my heart not to have found a solution as i am thinking of selling at a losss. i shoot proposals and wedding videos and these have to happen after dark with ambient lights ordinarily id shoot is0 800 to 1000 on my eosr and be good! but i dont just get it and i am already frustrated

    • @CamerasandTech
      @CamerasandTech  8 місяців тому +1

      I can’t speak on the r8 directly but, the r7 is very light hungry. If you’re slightly underexposed it will give you tons of noise. It’s always been better to work with standard profile or overexpose a bit to get a cleaner image. In your situation maybe a faster prime lens to let in some more light if your iso and shutter are already locked in.

    I would like to know your take on higher ISO than the base 800? Sometimes I record in lower light and using an external light is not possible or not preferable, so I'd like to know how bad 3200 or 6400 or even 12800 would be and if the noise is fixable?

    • @CamerasandTech
      @CamerasandTech  Рік тому +1

      Of course you introduce more noise, especially when using log profiles. A lot of ppl shoot standard profile in low light to simplify the noise reduction. Personally, I try not to go beyond 6400. I feel like with some post denoising the 12800 is perfectly usable. The r6 does surprisingly well in this category but tbh if low light is the your need no one beats Sony. The clean low light shots you see in movies are most often lit much better than they appear and edited to look dark. I hope this helps.

  • @Tacochamp123

    Thanks! I’ve been not using the luts. Just manually correcting. I have a preset that gets me there quickly. I’ve been exposing the 18% grey to 35 but for the scenes I’m shooting I feel like it’s too low. So I’m gonna try doing skin at 55 like you

    • @CamerasandTech
      @CamerasandTech  Рік тому +1

      For some reason clog3 is built to compensate for overexposure better than underexposing. I notice if I go over 55 it still looks okay but under 50 is usually pretty bad

    • @CamerasandTech
      @CamerasandTech  Рік тому +1

      Good question. I have found that the factory settings work best. I set the display to “iMac” color settings and I NEVER leave on True Tone or night shift when editing. It’s not exact but it’s very very close to perfect.

    Thanks for the video. I see I get a lot of noise when I shoot on clog3. Which camera are you using for this video? I can see a lot of noise on the wall behind you. Was it shot with the R6 in clog3 with ISO 800? Your face looks very clean though so I'm not sure if it's normal to get so much noise in the shadows.

    • @CamerasandTech
      @CamerasandTech  9 місяців тому

      Hey! I shot this with the R6 in Clog3. Any log is always susceptible to noise if you under expose. ISO 800 leave you vulnerable if you don’t have sufficient light. I personally don’t mind a little noise, sometimes I prefer it. If I wanted to get rid of it I’d just find a way to light those areas a little more or crush the blacks a little more and use noise reduction in post. Super easy fixes.

    Yeah. How to expose or make R5 footy look good. So much grain/noise with mine. Unless I shoot in a standard picture profile.

    • @CamerasandTech
      @CamerasandTech  Рік тому +2

      I had the same problem when I started with log footage. You need a lot more light or expose more to the right. Remember, movies are normally shot with a perfect exposure and then edited to be dark later. The whole movie “Moonlight” was shot in bright daylight lights edited to look like night. Otherwise all the footage would be underexposed. I shoot actual night footage in standard profile usually.

    I think you are going down the wrong road here. Instead of encouraging a person to get a good eye, you are just saying, "do these steps". The problem here is different lighting, exposure gives a different starting point, and the LUTs don't help you.
    The best way to learn is to put a colour card in the picture, then when you colour grade the footage you match the colours with the card you had in the picture by looking at the card next to your computer, then match them by adjusting the colour sliders. This method trains your eyes. And you colour match is perfect as it matchs the same card. Then if you want to be artistic, change from there. Playing with a LUT to correct is a fools game, yes use it to get some base colour to darken it, but then use your eyes.
    The only real tool is scopes as it tells you when the whites are blown out or the colours are. Of course, try not to blow too much out. This is also related to good in camera exposure.

    • @CamerasandTech
      @CamerasandTech  8 місяців тому

      I don’t necessarily disagree with you. But not everyone is dedicated to cinematography the way you assume they are. Some people want a way to get a good useable image without dedicating their life to color correction and color grading. So many of the audience are gamers, entrepreneurs and storytellers that just want to get started. You shouldn’t turn your nose up at people who take a different path. I took the long road and I’m okay with sharing shortcuts who don’t want to learn nodes, color contrast, and color science the way I do. Once they have the answer they can decide, not us, whether they would rather pursue the reasons behind what they just did.

    • @waynosfotoscameras
      @waynosfotoscameras 8 місяців тому +1

      @CamerasandTech that is what picture profile is for, you don't need to film log. You only shot log to get more dynamic range and creative control. Otherwise why shoot log?
