Hell, you’ll even see him playing Maggot Brain instead of Eddie WITH Eddie being on stage. Which I never really understood. But Mike is a MONSTER of a guitar player and has some really, really insane live performances during the period which Eddie was gone. He joined the band at 17 years old. CRAZY. That’s prodigious.
First time I saw "Motor Booty Affair" footage too I tripped off that! Mike playing "Maggot Brain" with Eddie on stage. One of my P Funk friends told me though, "Mike knew Maggot Brain so well that's what got him the gig."
@@DiscoHank Yeah, rumor has it that he played the solo note for note and George and the rest of the crew were pretty blown away! There’s a few live versions where Mike ripsss it too. Like Houston 1978. I mean it’s about as good as a guitar can be played if you ask me. I’m a HUGE fan of both Mike and Eddie.
@@geralddecosta320 I have looked through so many live videos of p-funk and found so many hidden gems. The 85 Rockplast video (the one that this performance came from in the video) is among the best I have seen in its entirety. Those videos from like 76 to 79 are absolutely ridiculous when Mike has the Super Strat and the Alembic! They say that Stratocaster he plays is the first ever super strat! It predates Van Halen’s Frankenstrat (which a lot of people thought was the OG). But Mike had 3 humbuckers in that Stratocaster in 1976. And the fact that it was a lefty (Tip of the hat to Hendrix) makes it that much better. The way the strings are strung up makes the low E the longest string. Which I think gives the guitar a totally different sound. I wonder where that guitar is now? A piece of history
I've never seen a song dissected and described like the way you did this one. And with such passion and enthusiasm. I loved watching you get "epiphanies" toward the end. Great job!
I love everything about this, Michael! I too play guitar and drums. Seeing Dennis Chambers play at a local drum clinic when I was young changed my life.. I'd guess '02. Thanks for covering this! Peace & love from Missouri -Todd

I’m a drummer and a Funkateer…My friend is saxophonist Greg Thomas out of DC. The ending is a combination of P-Funk tunes: 1st is the intro to Bootsy’s “ Rubber Duckie” of the Ahhh…The name is Bootsy, Baby LP and the intro to The Brides of Funkenstein’s “Disco to Go”
I've watched so many of your videos but this is my all time favorite. I listen to everything from Slayer to Duke Ellington but for some reason the older I get the more and more I find myself listening to P funk. Nothing puts me in a better mood than the raw minimal rules of real funk. It's so amazing to see someone else nerd out on funk as much as I have in my older age. 🤘🏽 P funk for life!
Awesome brotha this breakdown of yours is so DOPE ! Bring me back some memories. I first saw parliament/ Funkadelic at my 1st ever concert Oakland Coliseum in Oakland California at age 14 years old 1979 can you imagine how amazed I was. Oh but wait also there was Bootsy’s Rubber Band and Rick James. I was Blessed to see all at one time in there prime. Can you do Bootsy Collins he’s also a Legend
This takes me back to the glory days of listening to concerts at the Capital Center in what was known then as Landover, MD. They always brought their "A" game when performing in the DMV and played extended sets. Thanks for the breakdown. I'm covering songs and pissing off neighbors as I learn how to play "Marge." We both appreciate it!! Thanks Michael.
FYI The lick on the end is originally from Bootsie It starts with A,C,D,F....They know it so well that Dennis is able to take lots of rhythmic freedom with the fills on his execution.
Great to see your almost childlike enthusiasm on this video. You have clearly listened to George and Freed your Mind...and your ass has followed. That HOB show in Myrtle Beach that you are talking about was back in 2007 and I was there. I was standing on stage most of the show next to Danny Bedrozen. Before the show me and my brother were hanging out in my 18 wheeler in the hotel parking lot...playing guitar with the late Garry Shider and Boogie Mosson and of course, my good friend, Kidd Funkadelic...Michael Hampton. Been going to PFunk shows since the early 70's. This is a great classic video of multitudes of shows. Keep that awesome content coming. 🤩🤘🏾🤩
Hey old school can we chop it up about Bernie on the long version of aqua boogie. Can we talk about the Brides ...Texas. The new Neal Bogart movie Sam Jackson playing George. I go back as far as the first Funkadelic album. Always great to learn about the music!
Hey old school. So a background singer helped me sneek in to a showw at the fox in Detroit. Saw the whole show from the rafters on stage when they played flashlight I climbed down and danced on stage with my heros
This was great Michael. Good shout out to Dennis Chambers from Baltimore and showing the Germany concert, I (drummer) have lived in both...and Myrtle Beach was one of my best vacations too!
I dont know if you heard this I think 1976 Dr Funkenstein live... Its primitive, yet laid back....I love how George is conducting the funk orchestra but I completely like how he turns Michael Hampton loose for about 5 or 6 minutes solo
@@Guitargate ua-cam.com/video/-ga5xtTX_8E/v-deo.html He’s probably talkin about this recording which is actually from ‘77, but there’s a few others from 76 on youtube but they don’t have long guitar solos so idk. ALSO I strongly advocate that you take a look into Eddie Hazel’s deeper cuts for a new potential video. Like you could look up Funkadelic live 1969 which will bring to you 14 minutes of incredible footage of the original Funkadelic lineup playing live (I think it’s the only live footage of that era of PFunk available to us). The funky guitar grooves in that video are AWESOME, it would be so cool if you could break them down. It also features the band seamlessly transitioning in between several of their early songs in a medley-esque way...very tight. Have you heard The Goose by Parliament? If not, you should. So much is talked about Eddie’s blistering loud Maggot Brainy solo work but no one ever talks about or analyzes his incredible rhythm guitar ability, like that which he lays down on The Goose, along with a beautifully funky, subtle and laid back quiet solo towards the end of the jam. PUHLEASE man look at The Goose!
My buddy showed me your reactions to Kendrick Lamar and the Awe you were in made me a fan of yours. I can tell you understand what’s going on. You are a musicians musician, my brotha. You got a new sub! Keep going, champ.
Junie Morrison arranged this song for George Clinton after George had it as only a traveling song and never intented to record it becuase the 3/4 timing of bridge, but Junie said he could arrange it in a funky way and came up with this arrangment and what a hit it became. Dangerously funky!

Man, I thoroughly enjoyed watching you enjoy P-Funk! And I learned some things that I had no idea was going on inside the music. As a musician myself, I just vibed off of the music, and never tried to figure it out. I'm glad I found this! Thank you!
I watch your vids a lot trying to get better at guitar, but honestly dude, the thing I've gotten most out of your content is I enjoy just straight up listening to music more now than I ever have, and I can't come anywhere close to explaining in words how much this actually means. Thank you so much.
When I first heard this without actually watching Dennis, I thought there was a timbale player until I saw a timbale set up on the hi hat side of the drums and Dennis playing the timbale part...InCredible!
Dude, I’m 61 from East Tennessee, high school and UTK. It’s…Parliament. It’s Funk. I was 1 of 3 white guys at a Brothers Johnson and Rufus Chaka Khan concert in Chattanooga. Never did I have “to prove myself”. People just know when the first rip is played.
I'm halfway thru and just enjoy watching you getting into this old time favorite and explaining the music. Wish you were my music teacher. You make it fun!
Mike said to himself "let me put my sunglasses on so I can see what I'm doing" Love to see another funkateer. You a real one brotha 🍻 immediate sub. At the end of the day, it always comes back to the one.
I was down in Lake Okeechobee, Florida and I saw George as he was riding two dolphins and had a beat box on his shoulder. I yelled at him about the Fuzzy Haskin licks I learned and how it “got me off my ass n jammin.” He said, “COOL dawg” 😎👍🏼
I’ve been telling people for years that Parliament/Funkadelic was the greatest band ever, just because of all the hidden gems within their songs. I’ve seen them 30 times easily over the years and was never disappointed. I even played with Eddie Hazel in “Funkadelic 2nd Generation before he passed in 1992 and I’ve jammed with Mike Kidd Funkadelic Hampton a couple of times. Great video‼️🎶🤟🏾🎸
Man thanks for video. The very first concert I ever attended was a Funkadelic concert in Houston TX. A friend of mines snuck me in because I was only 17 years old. I can still remember the Mothership coming down and being high as a kite because of the second hand smoke. I had never seen that many T and A's in one place. I was pimple faced kid who for one night had gone to P-Funk heaven.
Bruh! So, my first album I ever bought was Uncle Jam Wants You by Funkadelic in '79, so I am partial to the P-Funk. But, your analysis emphasizes what I heard years ago. in an interview with Bootsy Collins, he compares backing James Brown like being in the military and going to George Clinton like the opposite. Free form and feel. Your analysis just reinforces that. Super cool!
Funny thing about that. If the story is more truth than rumor...it was James Brown who indirectly kicked off Parliament/Funkadelic further evolution. James Brown's music formula always relied on the One. When Bootsy left the JBs he took that with him and passed it on to George Clinton ...it was like an epiphany for George Clinton and everything was on The One from then on.
Goodness gracious, sir! Listening to you disassemble the sound added to the P-Funk I was listening to! You seemed like 'Sherlock Holmes' inspecting the scene of the crime from every angle and finding something new every time. That was FUN!! You clearly made your funk the P-Funk!!
I've seen plenty of these disections of songs but you are "hall of fame" caliber with this one. I'm thinking about learning some theory. . .probably not. But I loved it! You're very good.
Nice ending licks to your intro, it's always a pleasure to see what you present. Also always a pleasure to see your childlike love for music, but adult breakdown.

I like to thank you man for posting your awesomeness video on the tight rhythmic sound of PFunk!! I am 67 years young and I still jam to George Clinton and the PFunk Allstars from 72 and still today. I have seen this video you used to explain the the bands technics in developing the PFunk sound. The music is and was before it’s time such and like the band Sly and the Family Stone!! George is a great band leader and yes he commands what he wants to hear and gives the band to leeway to build on the musics notes that makes the crowds get up out of their seats to move and groove man!! The Parliament Funkadelic band of today is awesome as well with Black Byrd McKnight in lead guitar demonstrating his dynamic skills on the fretboards... with an awesome drummer Benzel Baltimore on drums to keep the beat in time for the band and the natives on the floor!!! Again I enjoyed your video I have subscribed and will keep tuning into you a whole lot more!! I’m not a guitar player but I do have a few guitars that play around with ....hopefully one day I will learn to play some PFunk tunes man!!! Thanks once again for breaking down this great tune!!😎🤩🎸🥁🎷🎼🤟🏾🎺🎹
They ring you out as in ringing clothes out. Unreal. My husband’s band went on before George when the Parliaments wore suits. My husband’s band the Enchantadors were wild. Loin clothes and suede vest were worn, no shoes. Head bans and other wild stuff. They swung from ropes. The next time we saw George’s Parliaments they were all funked up. The rest for them is history. Props to the Parliaments.
Hell yeah! This is so sick I love it! On a side note, you definitely help me be myself a lot more as a musician since I have been following your channel 🤘

Saw Dennis Chambers in a small club in Brecker brother band. Michael Brecker killed, Mike Stern killed, and Dennis Chambers was at their level or higher. Dennis Chambers held this Funkadelic Band together.
One mo Funk Fact: The original Knee Deep was over 40 minutes long, but Warner Bros wouldn't release it, so they cut it to 15 minutes. I asked George in 87, "Where in the hell did you come up with Knee Deep?" He said "Youngblood.... I don't know because we were high.... I passed out, woke up & the ladies had it." Then he told me about the 40 minute version. People thought I was lying about this, until the different versions started popping up on YT. So far, the longest alternate mix is 22 minutes. Someone has that 40 minute version.... I need it. And I just subbed.

Mike Kidd Funkadelic has unleashed some Monster Live Performances. The Kidd is Legendary!!
One of the best quotes George made was free your mind and your ass will follow! That explained the whole deal!
Correct.
Dude your cool has risen to amazing heights!
I've never seen a song dissected and described like the way you did this one. And with such passion and enthusiasm. I loved watching you get "epiphanies" toward the end. Great job!
I really enjoyed the comments greatly and you can tell this man has quality for he plays a PRS guitar.
All of these guys are just legends
YEAH MAN...R.I.P.JUNIE MORRISON WHO WAS THE BATTERY IN THE BACK FOR THIS ALBUM UNCLE JAM WANTS YOU 🤘
I love everything about this, Michael! I too play guitar and drums. Seeing Dennis Chambers play at a local drum clinic when I was young changed my life.. I'd guess '02. Thanks for covering this!

Seen p funk all stars 3 times between 2015 and 2022. As you said, never ever had so much joy at gigs
I’m a drummer and a Funkateer…My friend is saxophonist Greg Thomas out of DC.
The ending is a combination of P-Funk tunes:
1st is the intro to Bootsy’s “ Rubber Duckie” of the Ahhh…The name is Bootsy, Baby LP
and the intro to The Brides of Funkenstein’s “Disco to Go”
The keyboard player is David Spradley. The bass player is Skeet Curtis, the touring bassist for over thirty years.
Skeet left in the 90s
I kinda like the idea of a reaction channel with somebody that knows musical language. Most can't explain a dang thing about why it's good.
I’d love to!!!
Are you talking the Funk on the Green with the Brides, and they brought out that giant Funkadelic skull? I was there too brother!
Yeah Rod!
Much respect, I was at the underwater concert, and when george came down in a space ship, never again. Don't forget Parlet and Brides of Funkinstein!
This tune was arranged by Junie Morrison btw
Man…I’m glad I found this channel. Great job on the P-Funk breakdowns. So good…
Haha dude I wanna be your friend, this level of enthusiasm about both the dead AND pfunk?!
I appreciate what you did. Yes, you did teach. I play in Original Parliament and I just learned from you brother. Thanks
Big up Brutha Mike! You Rock!
You are definitely worthy of the funk, Michael...nice dissection.
Atlanta 1992 in the park, the funk was so thick you could taste the sweetness in the center of your maggotbrain!
Excellent breakdown of this music!!!
You’re right Parliament Funkadelic concerts was the shit in the old days!
Being fr Detroit the sound studio in Detroit George would listen to each musician, to pass his ear test and always had extras for when needed!!
FYI
The lick on the end is originally from Bootsie It starts with A,C,D,F....They know it so well that Dennis is able to take lots of rhythmic freedom with the fills on his execution.
I was going to mention that 👍🏾. It’s also the intro to Brides of Funkenstein “Disco to Go”
Great to see your almost childlike enthusiasm on this video.
@@gregmuscovalley3791 That's what's up Bro. Nothing like ha going out with George and The Funk Mob...! 🤘🏾🤩
Parliament and Funkadelic are my all time favs
This was great Michael. Good shout out to Dennis Chambers from Baltimore and showing the Germany concert, I (drummer) have lived in both...and Myrtle Beach was one of my best vacations too!
I dont know if you heard this I think 1976 Dr Funkenstein live... Its primitive, yet laid back....I love how George is conducting the funk orchestra but I completely like how he turns Michael Hampton loose for about 5 or 6 minutes solo
Hit me.
@@Guitargate ua-cam.com/video/-ga5xtTX_8E/v-deo.html
He’s probably talkin about this recording which is actually from ‘77, but there’s a few others from 76 on youtube but they don’t have long guitar solos so idk.
When he said "come here Michael" you already knew it was gonna be a stone groove.
FOR A WHITE BOY YOU ARE RIGHT ON POINT WITH EVERYTHING YOU HEAR...☝🏾...back in the day this was a movement that stay in motion...for more than 3 hours straight...you had at least 2 of JAMES BROWN’S on the 1 genius’s involved in the movement of motion of the COSMIC Establishment...NUFF/SAID💯💯🔥👍🏾☝🏾

Thank YOU brother :)
When I first heard this without actually watching Dennis, I thought there was a timbale player until I saw a timbale set up on the hi hat side of the drums and Dennis playing the timbale part...InCredible!
Oweee that intro!!!! 🤯 all it needed was some claps like prince
It's early in the morning and I'm watching Michael react to Knee Deep, it's gonna be a good day.
This was amazing...thanks for giving props too the funkedelic era. I still bump George Clinton!!!♥️
I really appreciate your love for the funk , and your breakdown just shows an indepth understanding of the music 🎵 , love it
Mike said to himself "let me put my sunglasses on so I can see what I'm doing" Love to see another funkateer. You a real one brotha 🍻 immediate sub. At the end of the day, it always comes back to the one.
Hey thanks for the lesson you’ve broke down everything from note to note 🎶 from this classic song from Funkadelic ( Not Just) Knee Deep live 👍🏾🤘🏾
Eddie Hazel is amaze, Bootsy, Bernie Worrell, Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker, with George Clinton on the mothership, love this band
This young man knows real artist
Bro, eventually, you have to do some Isley guitar.
“Hope you feel better love” one of the greatest solos of all time, very difficult to play 🎸🎸
No one can do that, sorry
No one can hold a candle next to Ernie isley.
Who's that lady or Summer Breeze, anyone of those would do, especially who's that lady.

Fantastic video, i have no idea what you were talking about half the time but thankfully music is a universal language. Loved it.
