- Well I'm into this binding thing whole hog now. This is my third submission coming back from Houchen Bindery, and I'm quite pleased with the results.
In this video I walk through the forms a little but I showcase the difference in the lay of a DFAB and a SMYTH binding and talk through customizing the spine cover.
I've ordered a white spine, and a black spine, and now I'm onto a Blue Spine to Match the Cover of the Custom Cover.
Totally worth it-check out the results!
I’d love see your custom shelves some day!
Oh good suggestion! I’ll squeeze that in to one of the video endings!
"You can buy Evolutionary war in trades" Yes but it's not complete as it's missing the alf annual! They also wrapped it up in an issue of thor 407. Alf not in any of them and some does not include the thor issue!
Hah! Alf!
Believe it or not the alf story is confirmed canon and alf is even talked about in the high evolutionary's handbook profile talking about the issue!
I hate when you have an issue then there are one or two issues that you have to find or if there's a missing issue that you have to hunt for.
@@kevinkelley3906 Oh, I know that feeling all too well. That Conan 1-150 run was a huge PITA. Issue 84 was the hard one for some reason...stupid issue 84....
The Punisher annual from Evolutionary War is one of my favorite covers
Ah yes...the slicey-gun cover!
Hey Rob,
This is super helpful! I'm looking at binding some of my comics to clear out longboxes and ran across your channel searching 'comic binding'. I wanted to see what Houchen's different binding methods and cover options looked like. You've convinced me to go with the graphic covers!
Do you have any experience with dust jackets with Houchen?
I'm glad my video could help! I definitely like my graphic covers. The buckram is nice and all in some books but the graphic ones really add to these modern volumes.
I never actually did try their dust jackets, I always just toss them off the books whenever I'm reading them anyways so I just didn't think to do them. I did get a dust jacket with a custom volume I bought from someone else where they made their own and I think their work was fantastic.
Hope this helps and thanks for the support for the channel!
Would square bound books be something like trades?
My understanding is that they are bound the same way if they’re small enough.
I know when I was looking at some information about making custom omni’s that someone was stripping covers off trades and then separating the individual pages themselves prior to sending them to the binder but I think that was a somewhat advanced binder.
I know I was quite nervous about doing the squarebounds as they are as the binding method with them doesn’t involve stitching. So far though the books seem to be holding up!
Great video! I’ve always wondered: if you send in multiple order forms in one package, do they all contribute to the minimum order cost or does each order form have to meet that cost requirement individually?
Thanks! I didn't know that there was a minimum order cost and hadn't even noticed that in their pricing sheet until just now when I was checking. I have been sending in binding in bundles of at least 4 each time and based on their standard pricing the total order would be well over their minimum so it appears that they are allowing the multiple submissions to work in counting towards that minimum. Otherwise the amount of add-on features to purchase per book would be a LOT in order to meet that number from their base fee.
Also ever thought of doing a bind for dc challenge mini series from the 80s?
Oh, now that’s an obscure one! Might have to give it some thought…🤔🤔🤔
Pretty much each issue would have a new team of creators. Any alive dc hero could be used, and they had to set up clues to a mystery than end in a big cliffhanger. The next team had to get the hero out of the cliffhanger and add to the mystery without talking to the team from the issue before! Joker even hosted an issue talking to the reader and getting into a fourth wall breaking fight with plastic mans sidekick!
Now that's definitely something to mull on!
Thanks for this video! I never knew custom binding was a thing. I now plan on getting my Captain Carrot books bound. But just wanted to know, do they feel sturdy considering the "regular" paper used for comics back in the 80s-90s? Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! It's a great question and I think I'm going to address that in an upcoming vid as I have a few bound comics that were done by another company and I'm going to compare those to the ones I had done through HF. When I had them side by side at my desk the other day I really could "feel" a difference and I think part of the difference I think really is the paper quality of the original books. Short answer: they're solid and sturdy and I actually think the older newsprint lends itself better to binding than modern materials.
@@tennesseefats thanks! It will be interesting to see the difference between companies. I plan on 2 books; one with old school paper, and the other with the newer glossy paper.
What is square bound?
It's a type of binding that comic companies used to do fairly often when they were looking at oversized issues. The DC100 page giants are an example of it where they essentially make a comic with a square edge to it as opposed to the fold with the double staples that you see in regular issues. Another example of that type of book would be any of the Marvel Giant-Size issues that came out in the late 1970's.
@@tennesseefats so what if I was trying to get some tpb custom bound.
That's a good question. I've never actually looked into that before. I was just checking the houchen bindery order form and it essentially assumes that you are going with a hardcover, so I'm guessing they don't do TPB's?
@@tennesseefats oh I mean there are a set of tpb(3) that I want to turn into a all in one HC.
@@iFkUrHo3 Oh! Yep they can totally do that. I believe they just treat it like a very large squarebound. They're quite helpful though when I have questions so if it's something you really want to make sure they don't screw up it may warrant a call or email direct to ask.
