    Shawn Staples Free Guitar Lessons - Miss America, STYX Main Riff
    This is one of the most fun riffs to play, when I saw them live I picked up on this one and I would recommend that when you go to see a band you love get up close to get a free guitar lesson from a guitar player you love.

      Thanks. I learned it years ago and I got real close but then a few years back I saw on TV in HD James Young and the band playing this song and I noticed he was doing something a little different. So I paused the TV, ran and grabbed my guitar and played it exactly like he was. So what you are seeing me play is just like him so I guess you can say I cheated a little bit but in a good way. On one final note I saw Styx in the later 70's on the Grand Illusion Tour in San Fransisco. Awesome show.

      Shawn Staples Free Guitar Lessons I am looking forward to it, James Young is an amazing guitarist, when I saw then back in Feb 1977..I think Tommy Shaw just joined the band and they didn’t look back...he brought a lot of talent to an already awesome band..

    Just wanted to say this an excellent job of teaching this riff. I have seen Styx live as well own several DVD"S and this is the only way I have ever seen it played by Tommy Shaw. JY on the other hand seems to play it most times in the 1st position which I find is a little more difficult so this way is preferable. Keep up the good work!

    • @ShawnStaplesFreeGuitarLessons
      @ShawnStaplesFreeGuitarLessons  7 років тому

      Both ways work, but this way you get that right hand hammer kind of feel. Thanks for your comment.

    • @blackfender100
      @blackfender100 7 років тому +1

      I learned it years ago in the first position Years ago but I have to say it sounds ok both ways.

    • @stevenbanks4555
      @stevenbanks4555 2 роки тому

      I was going to say the same thing. I've always seen Tommy play it this way and JY stays in 1st position. He starts it off like this but once he starts singing he goes into the other position.

    Awesome lesson! One more by Styx that I would love to learn is Queen Of Spades. If you know this one and ever have time.... Regardless your playing and teaching style is educational and inspirable. Thank you!

      Queen of Spades is a great song and I will put it on the list but the list is growing and do not know when I will get to it. I saw that tour when I was a teenager.

    What did you use for your tone setting? Thanks.

    • @ShawnStaplesFreeGuitarLessons
      @ShawnStaplesFreeGuitarLessons  3 роки тому

      Not sure because it was shot a few years ago. I can tell you that the guitar I am playing has all titanium parts, bridge, tail piece and other parts which effected the sound. I believe the amp is a Vox modeling amp that has a preamp tube in it that warms it up a little. I think a touch of delay as well.

    I've been covering this song since it was first performed by Styx live, and I can verify that Shawn is absolutely correct in how it's played. Don't let people like that Todd PUKEola jabronie, confuse you!!!

    Great job! Other than one comment. The riff starts E, D E not A, D, E. Reference this link you can clearly see at 1:04 how Tommy plays. It's also how it is on the record. ua-cam.com/video/gCMkl25iBEs/v-deo.html. This cover version also has it right. ua-cam.com/video/CpQ-Xdoh7V4/v-deo.html. Keep up the great work!

      @ShawnStaplesFreeGuitarLessons  6 років тому +2

      The way I am showing here is exactly as James Young played it in concert and is 100% correct in that regard. I did see Tommy Shaw play it a little different at the same time so I am sure there are different ways to play it but since James Young wrote the song I show it the way he plays it. Thanks for your comment.

    • @TheLowryAgency
      @TheLowryAgency 6 років тому +2

      I have watched several videos and most of the time JR isn't even playing during the song, Tommy is holding the lions share. That would be the way to play it, plus as I said, on the album it is played this way. If you are going to teach it, it should be the way on record on not the way it's played sometimes live. People are wanting the learn it the way they grew up hearing it. The other option is to play it all the ways you have seen them do it so that people can choose for themselves and state which way is your favorite. If I were going to play this live it would be E, D, E as that is the recorded version. Either way, it's a killer riff.

    • @ShawnStaplesFreeGuitarLessons
      @ShawnStaplesFreeGuitarLessons  8 років тому +1

      +Pyykola Todd I saw their hands up close and this is how they played it but when the verse started JY played it in the 1st position, so maybe thats what you saw. But the beautiful thing is if you play the right notes there are a few different ways you can do it. I did learn JY's way but only posted this one. Thank you so much for your comment. I will post the solo to this one someday as well.
