- A pretty impressive, and very heavy version of the Deep Purple In Rock classic, which Perth heavy rock pioneers Bakery released as the A side of their debut single b/w their own original "Leave Scruffy Alone"..obviously local fans were impressed as both sides reached #8 on the Perth Charts while also reaching the lower reaches of the National chart in early 1971. A 2nd single, this time following a switch to Astor records, did similar business and it was followed by their National breakthrough with the August '71 album "Rock Mass For Love". Not really a true indication of the band's heavy/progressive rock leanings But it was timely being the "God-rock" era of Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell & a host of spiritually influenced songs. Following a line-up change & a move to the East a 2nd, more typical Bakery album was their final release in mid'72, The band played a well recieved performance at Sunbury '73 with much respected vocalist Barry Leef out front, and were featured on the live album of the event. They then continued through to 1975, with various line-up changes. Some of the members who passed through Bakery's ranks include Mal Logan (Chain, Healing Force, Renee Geyer Band, LRB), renowned bassist Jackie Orszaczky (Syrius, Marcia Hines MD), Steve Hogg (Ayers Rock), Rex Bullen (Jim Keays' Southern Cross & the Renee Geyer/Marc Hunter bands), and members of the NZ Avengers, Rebels & Fatty Lumpkin etc
steve hogg is my dads dad!! i have adored his music for ages, i just have 1 CD. I’ve never seen anything online about him, i wish i got to meet him ❤
Great 70s sound, mixture of Deep Purple and Buffalo .Several years before my time unfortunetly although I did get taken to His Maj's Theatre in '75 to see Chalice live as a youngster.
I remember this band they played at chequers in Goulburn St 1972 3 fantastic
Played at Applecross Senior Highschool .. my first heavy rock experience
Ha!! Same!!
Great band and saw them a few times once at my high school.Loud and quite powerful sound screaming thru the corridors of Melville Senior High. Good memory. 1972. Awesome !
Yep. They played Scarborough SHS too!
Love it, I was 19 years old and heard them on a Friday night at the wine bar in Claremont, drinking Kits Cider. Memories..
1974 for sure saw Bakery at the Hordern, (from a distance), but could not help but listen, they were that good. A year or two prior to that I had seen a top band in a dim pub in the Illawarra, who amongst other things, absolutely nailed Deep Purple material of this vintage. I never forgot how good they were. After seeing this, I'm now content that it was Bakery, as I had never associated them with 'Purple covers. The look, the era, and the material fits, another of life's mysteries put to bed. Thanks a million for posting this................
Good band from this era. Did some great stuff. Momento is a favorite album. On vinyl of course!!! Saw them at the rock masses at St George's Cathedral way back when . They were an event.!!! Thanks for the music guys.
Fucking ace!
Deep Purple vibes, cool 😎
Baskerville Rock Festival.....about 1971
Great, i have a re-release on vinyl of the Momento LP, its great! i also have the rock mass for love LP , even that has some good material, 1 or2 good tracks. Thanks
The lineup in the photo didn't record this single.
Peter Walker
Your photo shows member Paul Ewing, top-right? Editing time.....
On left is Mark Versheur , vocalist, who was originally with Barrel House, upper left is Steve Hogg, basist, seated appears to be Peter Walker but the resolution is not quite good enough and it may be Hank Davis, the percusionest originally from the Kiwi band, The Avengers.
@@grifo1313 Mark V is not in this photo.
who was the lead guitarist?
Peter Walker... he's listed on their 'Momento' album as 'guitar, harp, vocals. Also hank Davis - percussion, vocals Rex Bullen - organ, piano, vocals Eddie McDonald - bass Mark Verschuler - vocals.
I think you will find that vocalist for "Bloodsucker" and "Dying in the Dark" (July 1971) was Tom Davidson. Mark Verschuer joined Bakery after these two singles were recorded.
