Friends - Lucille

  • Friends are a legendary Aussie band of the early 70's with far too few recordings, fronted by the powerhouse duo of Leo De Castro & the late Charlie Tumahai. In fact Lucille was their 2nd of just 2 singles..and even that was recorded live at Sunbury '73. This rare performance of the Little Richard classic, also live but on GTK, sees not just the formidable vocals of Leo & Charlie but also the band firing on all cylinders..and when that band includes the best available: guitarists Billy Green (Doug Parkinson In Focus/King Harvest/Renee Geyer/Stone soundtrack) & Ray Oliver (King Harvest, Ray Brown's One Ton Gypsy), bassist Duncan McGuire (Doug Parkinson In Focus & Southern Star Band/King Harvest/Ayers Rock) & drummer Mark Kennedy (Doug Parkinson In Focus & Southern Star Band/King Harvest/Ayers Rock/ Marcia Hines & Renee Geyer etc), the combination is unbeatable

I was born next door to the McGuire family so I knew Duncan from my birth until his sad death. He was such a phenomenal musician (on more than one instrument) and it was a privilege to watch his career, and a joy to see him perform. He was also a talented songwriter and record producer. Still sadly missed 30+ years later.

I met Ray Oliver a couple of years ago and I like to talk about the old days. He says great things about Duncan,in fact loved him and credits him with just about everything he learnt about musicianship in his formative years. Sorry for your loss😢

Uncle Kiwi (aka Leo de Castro) made it to the big screen alongside my husband Carl Perkins and other members of Herbs on the "Herbs: Songs of Freedom" on stage with Charlie...a must see movie soon hitting the cinemas in Australia xx

Loved them. I was the painful person who, at every one of their gigs I went to, called out for "Down by the River". They did a fantastic version. Micko, thanks for compiling and posting.

Leo is back living in NZ. He stopped singing years ago. But, a new double live and studio CD has just been released called Leo de Castro and Friends with some of the best sounding live stuff youll ever hear from OZ in 72/73.
Mark Kennedy from this clip is also the incredible drummer on most of Leo's tracks on the cds. Check them out cos it will blow your mind.

Yes Charlie moved to the UK not long after..but he was in bands in his homeland New Zealand prior..the names of which escape me. But after returning to NZ in the 90s, he played with the popular band Herbs

@@Mickster19592009 Hi Mick. After a little research on Oz rock,it appears Charlie was the singer, and bass guitarist with Healing force, end of the 60's. Their video for the single Golden miles,+other tracks, is on here at UA-cam👍

Good attempt at Trans Tasman super group..alas things didn't last long in the early 70s. riminally underrated..many members went on to bigger projects and recognition internationally.
