Useful video and whilst I have that Leatherman bits kit I don’t think I would ever need that ratchet. Although it’s a super gadget

What do you think of the Leatherman ratchet driver? I have that in the side of my Leatherman pouch and like it but I quite like this for getting into awkward places. I was thinking of getting the new Leatherman tool pouch thing and sticking the Leatherman in with bits and then one of these.

I would classify that as working. Yes it's got the play, but IMO using Leatherman bits is always a bit of a sketchy thing. They are made to always be there just in case, if you have a good chance of needing them a stubby, or multi head ratcheting screwdriver is always going to be significantly better. If you already have a leatherman, attaching that ratchet to the side makes a great little kit.

Yeah I think adding this is cheap and a good way to give options. I don't like all the play but hey it will work as you say.

I have had ups and downs with Leatherman bits. Being more a knucklehead than anything else over the years I have gone thu many Leatherman multitools. For a driver ratchet set up I bought a Wera Tool-Check Plus, checked into a canvas zipper bag with some odds and ends and never looked back.

I've been waiting for the tool check set to be on sale for almost a year now. They never seen to drop the proce of the dam thing. How is it holding up for you?

@@TrailTrek I am retired and my tools only serve to fix / work on mundane things and don't get stressed. But I have had this for several years and its held up well, the caddy the tools, bits etc set in is very sturdy. Nothing has bent or broke. And I as mentioned its in a canvas bag being knocked about. Its Wera quality so I expect nothing less. I have been using it since 2019, and it was only $8 cheaper then, so price has not really increased much.

Thanks for the video! You could actually eleminate the wobble by 3d-printing a holder for it but I am not sure if it would stand up against the forces. I am planning to try that if I decide to get the leatherman bit kit. Since its not forged steel, it is a little soft so I couldn't decide if I should get it or stick with regular bits.

True 3d printing is wonderful but when it comes to using them under stress im not that sure. bit kit is great in a pinch but a set of normal quarter inch from a decent manufacturer is lovely to use. Wera, Wiha or PB Swiss tools etc.

@@TrailTrek the printed part would be fine with the ratchet side because of the small amount of tension that it has, we just want to keep the bit from fallibg out from it, but cant say the same thing for the non-ratcheted side.
Yeah what i could do is edc the mostly used(also the ones you put more force when using it) bits from wuha and the less common ones from leatherman to cover all the bases.

Do you know of any simple quarter inch extenders that are long enough for the bit kit bits?

I bought this - the Sealey branded one but it's identical and probably produced in the same factory - but it never crossed my mind to use it with Leatherman bits! Why would I buy such overpriced poor quality made in Taiwan bits which are really only half bits which don't fit ideally in the object you want to drive nor in the bitholder, when for less money I can buy top quality Wera bits which are durable, fit in the driver and in the object I wish to drive? I know they are lighter and more compact being only half bits but for EDC or a mountain bike tool kit I don't need 40 odd bits, so I just carry the specific 1/4 in bits I'm likely to need, normally not more than 7 or 8 maximum.
Also I bought this primarily to use an an inline driver not a ratchet as it's better than most other EDC bit drivers out there on the market which are too weak, too big, or too small/short (Maratac Nub for example). There is the Big Ideas Design Ti EDS which has the advantage of holding the bits in the handle but at £130 it costs ten times what I paid for my Sealey inline driver/ratchet.
For carry, I use a Phillips leather iPod Nano case which cost me a fiver on ebay, the ratchet fits in there nicely with ample room for bits as well, no risk of losing them, and it's probably about the same size as the Leatherman bit kit. I have another pouch/case the same in which my Knipex Cobra XS fit perfectly. Both can sit in my trouser pocket, with a Spyderco Urban clipped next to them, no problem, and I still have room in my 5th pocket for lighter, torch and small Victorinox with scissors.

I think maybe the idea is you add this ratchet to the side of a Leatherman case so you have the Leatherman with its bits in the back and add this ratchet to the side. But of course you are right the wera bits are massively better. I'm sticking this in a maxpedition micro with a set of 31 bits and maybe adding the smallest knippex cobra in there as a nice little ratches set. I was looking at getting a really thin vessel ratches for tight spaces but the price on shipping stopped that idea I might try a copy though as I want to see what the thin profile ones are like with bit storage in the handle. vessel.co.jp/english/product/screwdriver/250076

@@TrailTrek Yes I suppose if you're carrying a LM with bit driver then the LM bit kit is the way to go. Otherwise it's not the best solution. It kinda annoys me that they do these proprietory bits instead of putting a standard 1/4in bit driver on the Wave etc. but then again they have to make money. I like the way some SOG multitools like the PowerPint/Access have the 1/4 in bit holder, I reckon you could add a Wera extender to get more reach. I wish too that Wera would make a revised version of their mini ratchet with a bit holder in the end of the handle like this, I'd probably replace my Sealey ratchet with that even if it did cost a lot more. They would make a killing from us EDC folks.
I like the look of the Japanese ratchet but yeah also no inline driver dual role and obviously expensive but better quality than the many Chinese ones like this.
