    A Do Not Resuscitate Order, or “DNR,” is a patient’s official and legal instruction to all medical personnel that states s/he does not wish to be treated medically in the event his/her heart or breathing functions cease. Patients with a DNR order are often elderly or suffering from a long-term illness. In many cases, they wish to deny CPR procedures.
    DNR orders are acknowledged by all medical personnel, including emergency physicians and EMTs.
    A legally-binding DNR form primarily denies three treatments:
    CPR treatment, such as mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions;
    Electric shock by defibrillator; and
    Breathing tubes inserted through the patient’s mouth
    A DNR order doesn’t deny all medical intervention. The patient will still be able to receive other modes of treatment like medical drugs. DNR forms only aim to deny emergency CPR-related treatment.

      Hello there, apologies for the delay in responding. While we are unable to provide legal advice about your particular situation, the desire to receive or not receive certain drugs as part of medical treatment is a common part advance care planning. The process of incorporating it into a legal document will vary depending on the state in which you reside. See our page about Advance Directives to find more options specific to your state:

      Hope that helps!
