It angers me that Keurig was even allowed to design their makers this way. Microsoft was broken up by the US government for this very reason. Thanks for this upload. I have no guilt or shame in bypassing this form of robbery on the company's part. 👍
If you open the next section where the display is connected you will see a wire harness that clips into sensor . I unclipped it not cutting any wires and it works perfectly! 😊💪
Just finished this hack and it works great! Thanks for posting. I just snipped the green wire since that harness is nearly impossible to get to. Also cracked that silver trim piece on top during disassembly, but you can barely tell when I put it back together. Just a word of caution for those trying this who might care about that.
Thank you for your video! I have a K300 machine and this hack helped me. The K300 is a little different you have to disassemble the machine a little further to find the color sensor plug but it is on the other side of the printed circuit board. Same green wire removed made my machine function perfect with any non Keurig cup. Thanks again for this video as this has saved me from re-using old parts from the k-cups to use my machine!
Awsome! it worked like a charm. I used this information to do my Keurig 2.0 Carafe unit, the plug with the green wire is behind the black plastic outer cover on the water tank side, so I had to remove a few more things than your post but it worked good! Best permanent fix out there. Much better than cutting and gluing or breaking stuff off. Take your time taking it apart, be carefull not to break any tabs. Thanks for the video!!!!
Dude, thank you SO much for this! I've just had the outer ring from an old K-cup cut out to go around my reusables, but they wear out and even taping one over the sensor only lasts so long. I can't wait to go try this - you have just enhanced the most important part of my day!
Thanks for posting this. One thing. You should put some electrical tape over the end of the green wire instead of leaving it free inside the machine to avoid shorts.
Thank you for showing us how to 'fix this. My old Keurig 2.0 machine started showing the "Opps!" message on every K-cup. Yes, genuine K-cup and 2.0 compatible adapters. I actually had to remove the 4 other screws on the bottom to remove the back housing piece, because my hand was just to big to push the plug back in. She works like a charm, now!
Thanks for this!!! I don't know why I didn't look this up sooner. I have the K300, so the plug was actually on the opposite side of the board. I had to take the outer plastic shell off to access it. But it works!!
I just bought a K475, the connector now is on the back so your not going to be able to disconnect the connector. Instead, i just cut the green wire and BAM it worked. The wires are the same, Keurig just move the mount to an inconvenience place. Do the needful, cut the green wire. Thanks so much for the video.
I used this on a K400 Keurig 2.0 and it worked. The connector is placed between the plastic housing and the circuit board so I could not remove the connector without removing the housing which is too much trouble. I merely clipped the zip tie and then cut the green wire. Thanks for the easy fix bro....
a great and easy hack. I knew it was a matter of time before someone came up with a true internal hack to defeat the DRM which I thought was absurd to begin with. thanks for making this video.
Just ought a 450 for my wife and went about hacking it before I ever even plugged it in. Had a little more trouble disassembling, but got it done. My board was configured slight different, with no visible plug like yours. I traced the multi colored wires from the lid down, and simply cut the same green wire. I would have preferred de-pinning it, like you did, but that would have required so much more work to access it. Thanks for the time posting this. Signed: another non-keurig K cup brewer!!
That is so awesome!!! I did it while watching your video and I can now use any brand reusable k-cups and the k-carafe works great as well. You're the MAN!!!! Thanks,
Wow!! Amazingly helpful! We have a slightly newer model so the circuit board was located in a different spot so we just snipped the green wire and it worked perfectly! Thank you!!!!!
I took mine apart but the newest k575plus does not have a j27 color sensor plug anymore. The solder points are there. It is still marked, but no plug or pins anymore. Also all the wire are black now.
I really appreciate you showing how to disable the optic sensor, but I think I experienced anxiety watching you reassemble the Keurig. I am hoping this will work for me since I have replaced my needle assembly with an off brand unit and cannot access the full menu anymore. It shouldn't make a difference since I have been using the same load your own cups as when the Keurig was completely OEM.
KENNETH ADKINS thanks, but i prefer not to cut the wiring, if still under warranty, i can plug it back on easier., I like this one, just pull off and taped it. :)
I would like to thank you for this Kenneth, cutting the green and yellow worked perfectly for my Keurig K575 plus. I had purchased a Geesta clip and magnet kit, it didn't work. I had to tape a 2.0 foil to the clip over the orange square, it would only allow me to use the regular menu but gave me the ability to use any pod. That wasn't good enough for me after purchasing a 2.0 plus the orange 2.0 carafe pods and the Carafe I wanted my $200 worth. I used Ricky Bennett's video as a guide to which wires I should cut and found pulling that green wire with big man sausage fingers was impossible. So I Cut the green and said "I might as well cut the yellow while I'm in here because I don't want to open this again." and cut the yellow. With the Geesta T magnet in the lid I get the full menu with any pod! Happy Days :)
I put my orange carafe pod in and it says this setting does not support carafe. Remove carafe. Will cutting the green wire take care of this? What is the yellow for?
When you disable the DRM how does it know what temperature to brew at? I was told for K-cups it is 193 and for Vue and K-carafe it is 197 degrees. What temp does it brew at after you disable the DRM?
Thank you! Works great! The hardest part is getting that plastic top part on/off (that was a son 0# a B1^c#!). Also my model had the connector on the other side, by the external wall. I had to do one extra step and take the wall off. Much better then taping a fake lid on a k-cup. ;)
Here it is 2:45AM and I've just put my Keurig 2.0 400 back together without disconnecting or cutting any green wire. Circuit boards in mine are in a much different location. Looking at it from the front my board or board are just behind the Left side just under the water supply tank. I was unable to get to the connector without removing the whole outer shell of the Keurig so I gave up re-assembled and brewed a cup of EXPRESSO for a night cap. I just got mine late last month and maybe Keurig saw these posts and made it just a bit harder to access that puppy. I'll have to try again with some curved forceps and a couple hooks from the shop.
The Bad News: The K450 does NOT let you do this easily. The color sensor plug is on another side of the circuit board, under a plastic housing. It looks like they caught on to this and did what they could to hide it. The only way to reach it in this model (and maybe all newer models) is to tear apart the whole machine. Sides, top, guts... You simply can't get to the plug without doing so. That said, the hack works. The toughest part is getting the damned plastic parts to snap back together. Also, be careful of the hoses! You don't want a leak!
Actually there is a lot easier way to perform same hack, all you have to do is take 2 screw off (they are in the opening) to remove top middle top part and you can see same green wire which I cut. but of course I was following a video and took the whole thing apart already just to realize this wire was exposed the whole time. the most difficult was the u-shaped part which I cracked in the process, but no problem I'm happy posted this video, it helped me.
I had one of these 2.0 Keurigs. The key word is HAD. Once I learned that I could only use certain K-cups and couldn't use my own freshly ground coffee I immediately took it back and bought a different brand. I was quite disappointed in Keurig for making this restrictive coffee pot.
I have the Keurig 525C that is mostly sold at Costco. I tried every hack and this was the best one. But on the 525C it is the ORANGE WIRE and will get the FULL MENU so you can use the reusable carafes.
I have a slightly different setup with my connection on the backside of the board but I got it and then did the magnet mod at the same time where I broke the magnet off the slide and super glued it in the right place and now it does what I want it to do thanks for the info
FYI taking out bottom screws isn’t necessary. Otherwise it works great. I just snipped the green wire didn’t bother unplugging it. No need to ever have the restrictions on again.
Hey, I did exactly as you did and disengaged the green wire, but now it won't give me any cup sizes.. asks to dispense water only? Not sure if you can help with that. I have the same model as you..
Well, I have a K550 and I cut the green wire I thought was going to the top connector and it didn't work. There are two green wires and all this finagling around at the board is pointless. The wire bundles go in front of the machine so it'd be a lot simpler to just show which bundle of wires is involved and which one to cut without dismantling the whole machine which is a royal PItA.
Green Wire magic awesomeness. Nice video rec and edits. Sound was perfect. Easy step by step descriptions narrated. Good voice quality. I especially love the ending. Bam!! p.s. For a hobbyist or coffee lover, this video is NOT too long. Length of this video demonstrates to the domo-viewer what the "hard parts" are for the user to deal with, and even these extra few seconds of finger-wrestling with the device cover are shortened through good post editing. All-in-all, a good comfortable demo on how to install a good hack on a daily-use fancy electrical kitchen device. Excellent. I love my Keurig(s), and now I am happy with 2.0 finally being UNLOCKED.
This mod will not work on a K575+ machine. Removing the green wire will not allow operation of this machine at all. I put things back together. Since I have only a few of the older kcups left and some plain black self fill pods I will just replace these old self fill pods and go from there. If I am wrong about this please tell me. Thanks
For anybody that chrome handle on top that keeps getting in the way you can get off in 1 minute with 2 screws on the back on top and pull and twist. Same to put back on.
Never mind; I ended up breaking every pop thingy on the top ring, but thankfully it doesn't seem to matter... And the top panel came off easily enough, but I couldn't get it seated properly again. The Keurig now has a bit of side-bulge and a screw loose, but it no longer has any complaints about using my personal coffee! I can't thank you enough for the video; I'd have never been able to get to that silly green wire without it.
No it doesn't, but there's a separate mod that can be done for that. It's the VUE menu, and that shows up whenever there is a larger (Vue) cup in it. You can enable that separately from the DRM - get the menu for official K-Cups, or have no DRM without it.
It seems the k500 models are a little different that the other versions. I have the k450. You have to remove the outer shell and the connector is on the outside of the board on the water tank side. It is labeled sensor and just cut or disconect the green wire and bam, freedom! I also hacked the menu which is extremely simple. Open the part where you put the kcup in. There is a spring loaded peice that will move down. Push it down and on the right of it there is a hole. Push the peice down and shove like 4 toothpicks in that hole. It should keep the peice down when you take your finger off of it. The menu is unlocked! You gain six different modes(which I haven't looked up yet), but you lose your hot water selection. Big deal, just run it without a kcup, it's the same. My keurig is super awesome now! Good luck!
i just got a new keurig as a warranty item from the company. went in to do this hack, they changed the board layout and put in a failsafe. even if the connector is un plugged now it will not make coffee...
+Joseph marcinkowski , I have run into the same issue with my Kuerig 2.0-300. I took the entire unit apart and removed the green wire but it still gives me the opps message and now won't accept any Kuerig K-Cups. Did you find a solution to get past this issue?
Here is what i do i baught a Brew and Save Brand refilable carafe size filter for the kurig 2.0 at wallmart about 8$. you can brew single cups or pots with this refilable filter plus it opens all the brewing options of the machine. Also you get an off brand k-cup put it in the machine close it open it so it pokes the top and bottom holes in the off brand k-cup put it inside the carafe size refil filter close it and brew it works i use my 2.0 k300 this way with any brand k-cup.
Love this hack! And it worked! But... Mine went belly up, and Keurig sent me a new 2.0 500 and guess what? No more color sensor! Not sure what the deal is, but it's gone! I cracked the machine open, and the circuit board is all different, the color coding is gone! All black wires. I got to looking closer, and the entire sensor assembly is gone! I wonder if screaming consumers cause them to stop the silliness... Anyway, thanks for the video! It was perfect when needed! I just wonder if all newer Keurigs are like this now?...
So no more drm built in? Nice, I was wondering about this since I've been thinking about buying one recently. But possibly sticking with k-select model...
all you had to do was tape a piece of paper over the plastic in front of the sensor !! (it does not read any codes since the "dot" on the carafe cups is just a flat spot of ink) I did this with my Keurig 2.0 after splicing the magnet wires together and it works perfectly.
If anyone is going to take a chance on doing this, instead of cutting the wire and leaving it like that I would suggest putting a switch in line with the wires and mounting the switch on either the back of the Keurig or the bottom of it so that way if this fix doesn't work you can easily change it back by pressing the switch..... Rather than having to unscrew or take apart anything again.
Literally took 5 mins. I just snipped the green wire. Didn't bother unplugging from the board. Worked great. Thanks for the hack.
It angers me that Keurig was even allowed to design their makers this way. Microsoft was broken up by the US government for this very reason. Thanks for this upload. I have no guilt or shame in bypassing this form of robbery on the company's part. 👍
XD it’s funny and sad when a company try’s to dictate coffee!
If you open the next section where the display is connected you will see a wire harness that clips into sensor . I unclipped it not cutting any wires and it works perfectly! 😊💪
If you just pop the very top cover, there’s easier access and you can just clip the green wire. This video was a VERY hard way of doing this
Just finished this hack and it works great! Thanks for posting. I just snipped the green wire since that harness is nearly impossible to get to. Need to explain in detail as to how do you know which wire to pull, and why the green one? Did you found the schematics online? How did you know
thanks ken. worked like a charm. after words, i electrical taped the green's end.
It's much easier to just take black side panel to cut the green wire. No need to take the silver top off.
BTW, this is the best hack.
Snipped, no more stupid msgs with proper cups. Works. Thanks.
I hacked my 2.0 keurig but I cut the wrong wire. Now, when I place any kind K-Cups coffee on my 2.0 keurig it gives me ice cold pepsi.
Like
C'mon, how can this machine cool anything!
Hahaahaha
which wire do I cut to have it give me Ice Cold Beer? ;)
I took mine apart but the newest k575plus does not have a j27 color sensor plug anymore. The solder points are there. It is still marked, but no plug or pins anymore. Also all the wire are black now.
Works great! No more rims and rubber bands. Thanks!
Awesome works great thanks! removing and replacing the plastic top cover is tricky, some techniques on how to precisely do this would be helpful.
My favorite part.....BAM!! What?!? What!?! Great video thanks for the hack!!!

Thanks for the info!! We watched the video, followed your example, and were able to override the code!!
@ 9:03 Is that an EVP??? Or just a kid whispering...
Very odd!!!
Great video. And it was funny, you struggling to take it apart. I felt your pain trying to get those clips loose.
Thanks for putting together the Keurig hacking disassembly video. I linked to it in the description for the original.
Thanks to your research. Here is another video a guy posted ua-cam.com/video/jWNhZlDcJko/v-deo.html
Best Keurig 2.0 Hack on youtube!
I think you did a very good job with your 1st video. I'm definitely going to try this out on my 2.0
When you disable the DRM how does it know what temperature to brew at? I was told for K-cups it is 193 and for Vue and K-carafe it is 197 degrees. What temp does it brew at after you disable the DRM?
BAM......WHAT,WHAT! (love that) Great video, thanks :)
Does this work for the Keurig 860?
The struggle to snap off was REAL!!! Oh boy but persistance paid it all off :)
Thanks for the video. You should get a good set of spudger tools for disassembling the thing.
Can you do a hack of water sensor to control an external solenoid valve to fill tank?
Will this work for the 560 model? The logistics sound the same. Any takers?
I had one of these 2.0 Keurigs. The key word is HAD. Once I learned that I could only use certain K-cups and couldn't use my own freshly ground coffee I immediately took it back and bought a different brand. I was quite disappointed in Keurig for making this restrictive coffee pot.
What brand did you end up getting ? Does take all the k cups ? Ready toss1 I have out .
I have the Keurig 525C that is mostly sold at Costco. I tried every hack and this was the best one. But on the 525C it is the ORANGE WIRE and will get the FULL MENU so you can use the reusable carafes.
Worked for my k425 brewer., thanks a bunch!
Thank you, this was awesome. Appreciate your attention to all the details, it realy helped..Thanks again.
I have a slightly different setup with my connection on the backside of the board but I got it and then did the magnet mod at the same time where I broke the magnet off the slide and super glued it in the right place and now it does what I want it to do thanks for the info
is the green wire always the DRM sensor for all models?
Planning on getting the 550 I hope it's the same setup.
Excellent video - tyvm
Thanks for posting your work. I might actually get one of these now....
WTF are you doing to get the cable to pop out?
FYI taking out bottom screws isn’t necessary. Otherwise it works great. I just snipped the green wire didn’t bother unplugging it. No need to ever have the restrictions on again.
I have a ? How can i fix when appling the big coffe carafe mug say wrong k cup
Wonder how long before cup shapes start changing now
Hey, I did exactly as you did and disengaged the green wire, but now it won't give me any cup sizes.. asks to dispense water only? Not sure if you can help with that. I have the same model as you..
Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm having the same issue.
Bravo mate
Green Wire magic awesomeness. Nice video rec and edits. Sound was perfect. Easy step by step descriptions narrated. Good voice quality. I especially love the ending. Bam!! p.s.
Thanks
mike fish this mod works half the time on a k525
Thanks works as it should now 👍
take the sensor out and you get more options for brewing, plus hotter coffee.
i suppose leaving the wire intact would be handy if you ever needed to send the keurig in for warranty work.
Awesome video. I have the k450 and i just cut the small green wire.
Great vid I had a different model but same green wire worked. Got it for $12 at a thrift store!
Thanks for this info! Fly eagle's fly!
what about the secret menu? Currently I use a magnet
Will this void my warranty?
Thank you worked like a charm.
For anybody that chrome handle on top that keeps getting in the way you can get off in 1 minute with 2 screws on the back on top and pull and twist. Same to put back on.
this is unrelated but does anyone know where to get a refillable carafe cup?
Cool, thanks for the video!
Can anyone explain how to unsnap the panels? They aren't budging, and I'd rather not have to break them and duct tape them back on if I don't have to.
Just wondering if someone was with you. Heard whispering at 9:06. LC
Never mind I hadn't watched the whole video yet. Must have been the little one.
Will this hack work on the Keurig 560 2.0??
I did it on my K500 ! Works great
well done
Does this hack unlock the hidden menu that lets you choose the 14oz travel mug size and the favorites menu? It doesn't show that in the video.
I'd like to know this aswell..
I cut the wire and mine didn't change anything besides removing the DRM. No options larger then 10oz for the regular K-cup sizes.
No it doesn't, but there's a separate mod that can be done for that. It's the VUE menu, and that shows up whenever there is a larger (Vue) cup in it. You can enable that separately from the DRM - get the menu for official K-Cups, or have no DRM without it.
Nope, but taping a little magnet to the sensor in the machine (above, not below) unlocks everything.
Could the same plug be removed once the front side was removed? The piece that slides off.
Has anyone tried this mod on a K475?
It seems the k500 models are a little different that the other versions. I have the k450. You have to remove the outer shell and the connector is on the outside of the board on the water tank side. It is labeled sensor and just cut or disconect the green wire and bam, freedom! I also hacked the menu which is extremely simple. Open the part where you put the kcup in.
Did you find a solution to get past this issue?
i was able to get it to work i had to make a jumper between two of the pins on the board, i will follow up with pics of what pins i had to jump
+Joseph marcinkowski which two pins did you have to jump and do you have you tube video of this? Thanks
Here is what i do i baught a Brew and Save Brand refilable carafe size filter for the kurig 2.0 at wallmart about 8$. you can brew single cups or pots with this refilable filter plus it opens all the brewing options of the machine. Also you get an off brand k-cup put it in the machine close it open it so it pokes the top and bottom holes in the off brand k-cup put it inside the carafe size refil filter close it and brew it works i use my 2.0 k300 this way with any brand k-cup.
trying to find a guide like this for the 300
Sure hope I'm far away from you if you ever attempt disarming a bomb. Good info funny watching you fumble with it.
I think he’s had too much coffee 😉
good job man, ill have to fix this on my parents model
Awesome - thank you!!!!!
Mine will not read a carafe pod. When I insert the pod it says this setting does not work with carafe. No way to change the settings. Any ideas?
So does this hack still allow you to let out 6 ounces of hot water for tea?
+Gifters -i did it and yes, all other settings work like usual.
THANKS! works great!!! no more super glueing stupid lables
all you had to do was tape a piece of paper over the plastic in front of the sensor !! (it does not read any codes since the "dot" on the carafe cups is just a flat spot of ink) I did this with my Keurig 2.0 after splicing the magnet wires together and it works perfectly.
WORKS AWESOME!!!! THANK YOU!!
Anyone know if it works with the new K575?
If anyone is going to take a chance on doing this, instead of cutting the wire and leaving it like that I would suggest putting a switch in line with the wires and mounting the switch on either the back of the Keurig or the bottom of it so that way if this fix doesn't work you can easily change it back by pressing the switch..... Rather than having to unscrew or take apart anything again.
Works great! Ty
Works!!!! THANK YOU!!!
seems after cutting the green wire it brews faster. The end result is a weaker cup
Be careful what you wish for. Removed the green wire and now it just says, "lift the lid to continue."
