Tony Northrup previews the Canon 1DX Mk III (sdp.io/1dx3), Canon’s 20 megapixel, full-frame DSLR for professional sports, wedding, portrait, and wildlife photographers. It has up to 20 FPS, 5.5K video, 4k/60 video, and EVERY other feature Canon could possibly come up with… but it has some serious weaknesses, too, and you still might be happier buying the Sony a9.

Australia's largest media organisation just auctioned off all its DSLRs and moved to Sony APS-C kit instead. It started when news photographers were saying they were sick of lugging all that heavy big gear around and started leasing their own Sony a6400's. Now the default is an a6600 with the 16-55 f2.8. One other body with a longer zoom optional. Also they put a 30mb file size limit on uploads. They have stock presets uploaded and now they send jpegs via wifi to their iPhone 11 which acts a as a spare camera, and sends them direct to the news server over the 4G network. 5G will make it almost instantaneous. Videos are 1080p/60, max 10 minutes, to keep the file sizes manageable.
Its all about carrying less kit, eliminating old school processing workflow and making photographers much more mobile.

Very interesting. I've seen at least a couple general assignment Chicago news photographers on staff at one of the papers and they don't carry the 1DX models. Don't blame them. Just not necessary for ordinary reportage. 5DMark-whatevers, if I recall, and only one had a battery/vertical grip.

I'll use live view on occasion with the a9 but only when I have to (like some basketball player is wayyy close and I can't be blind but I still want the shot)
But the thing is about the mirrorless cameras is they have that sensor that detects your eye, so taking my eye off and looking at the viewfinder is nothing, it's just instant switch back and forth. With the 1dx it's going to be a menu setting or button or something, no one needs that hassle.

Great review. I am a Canon fan...I just started getting into Photography and bought an 80D and i love it. Once i get good enough i will most likely go FF and depending on how many lenses i have will probably stay with Canon. But i must say we have the Sony a7RIII at work and when i picked it up...held it...and looked through the viewfinder i was blown away. We also have a D610 and i like that as well. So i agree with you on 2 huge issues that in this day and age are taking way too long to become mainstream and that is 1) Hybrid Viewfinders and 2) 4G/5G sims in the cameras for instant cloud backup.

To me, thanks to a previous video in another channel, the camera looked like same as before but a bit better for sports but not much.
The issue with Sony is that is giving up with Canikon (as Pentax, etc....) with bringing lenses to events as Canon and Nikon do.

It sounds like this camera will require a gimbal on a large tripod or, at least, a large tall monopod for video or mirrorless mode work. Maybe a cloth shroud, pulled back from the camera and covering the photographers heed and shoulders, could be used to professionalize the arms-length viewing stance imposed by the fixed rear screen and lack of a combo dual-mode OVF/EVF.

    • @nordic5490

  • @EdMartinIMN

Appreciate your frank discussion and advice. I may be thinking about this camera differently than most. I am looking at it as enhancing the ability to get good video without an operator whether the operator is on a second actual video camera or I am doing something on my own that day. 1DX Mark III has eye detection in addition to face detection in live view. My impression is the autofocus is significantly enhanced rather than just a tweak. As you said nobody really complains about the AF on the Mark II but I think there is significant improvement in AF which speaks to just how good it probably is. Not just new tech but many more focus points and much faster processing of AF which should result in a higher hit-rate of in-focus shots and less hunting in video mode. My thought is on a tripod for one-person shooting you could probably have really shallow depth-of-field and not have the camera hunting for focus. Not only that but since it has the so-called "deep learning" tech if you wanted to turn away from the camera and look at something while talking presenting a side profile or even with back to camera the system will continue to track your head rather than refocusing on something. You can also adjust more parameters in how the focus behaves. I believe the eye tracking and recognition of human (head rather than just face) is available in live view photo and video modes - maybe limited to crop modes for 4k 60? Am I missing something or will the Mark III be significantly better to set on a tripod and move into field of view for one-person production than any other Canon camera? That is kind of how I am looking at it - much better "unattended" shooting. Put an Atomos monitor on the hot shoe facing you and let the camera worry about focus. Record 4K 60 to Atomos to get around expensive CFexpress cards. I think it also gets around the 30 minute limitation. So am I looking at this wrong? Wouldn't the 1DX Mark III be the ultimate single-camera tripod setup for someone who wants to record themselves without a camera person?

    Hello Tony,

Does Sony have better high ISO performance compared to canon 1DXMkii particularly interested in Sony a7R4

    • @loudandclearmedia
      @loudandclearmedia 4 роки тому +5

A7III has better high ISO performance, but the A7R4 has the worst high ISO performance of the current Sony cameras. The pixel density is too high. Though, people don't buy 61MP cameras typically to shoot high ISO....and people don't buy 20MP cameras to shoot architecture and landscape, so different tools. I own A7III, A7Riii, and A7R4. I shoot architecture professionally, and for that the A7R4 is a dream. Get it anywhere over ~ISO 320 though and it's noisy...over ISO 1600, forget about it.

Riyaz Ahmed I’d take the A9 over both of those, with the 1DX2 a close second. The Sony R bodies work best when stabilized. Having said that, as long as you have enough light to keep your shutter speed high enough, both of the Sony R bodies will take much more detailed images.

Thank you Tony/Chelsea. Your comments on pre-production reviews makes so much sense. I have a question on IBIS in general... logically (which I’ll admit may be flawed...), it seems like it would be better if the image showed up at the sensor stabilized (lens IS) vs having the camera trying to both stabilize and perform AF. I get all the reasons why IBIS could be a benefit, specifically with lenses with no IS, but what is the better design? IS helps AF, but should the process be serial or parallel? Thank you!!!

Tony - Thanks for your initial comments on this camera. As you proceed to a more hands on, field test type review, one thing I am most interested to learn more about is how dual pixel focus tracking (using as mirrorless camera) on this camera compares to the phase detection (using as DSLR) for fast moving subjects (primarily mammals and birds in flight).
I have searched the reviews on the internet and there is no attempt to compare the two, under any circumstances. To me, this comparison answers question that potential buyers of this camera might have and will also suggest where Canon is headed in the future. Focus tracking is a key performance aspect and for many photographers.......until dual pixel at least equals phase detection for speed and accuracy they will not purchase a mirrorless camera. Thanks Ron

I mean yes it sounds appealing and all, but for the real professionals what does it account for? If you shoot in dark, you typically use flashes or other means to light up the subject, IBIS wont save you and you cant write off everything on it... If you shoot sports all day, IBIS wont save your hands from the weight of the setup but the monopod is a must... If you shoot landscapes, tripod is a must...

An adjustable screen would have been real nice but I knew that would never happen. It's hard to see the 1DX3 being attractive to anyone except pros currently using 1DX2s that are getting long in the tooth. For those guys, the Mk3 could make some sense, but IMO Canon has left too much on the table for this body to appeal to anyone else. I mean, $6500 and it's not even their most current mount?! All of the awesome glass Canon has been developing lately cant even be used with it....eye detect only through live view, and still no IBIS? DSLRs will be dead in a few years, and this is a LOT of coin to drop on a dying breed. If only they'd build an EOS R with these speed and specs they'd bury Sony. $6500 for s DSLR though is a tough pill.

Wait with such statements, until you have proof.

  • @brandonsafstrom9867

I think the 16fps may be a little more than theoretical...
    From the Canon white paper:
"One specific improvement in AF system speed is that the rate of separate AF detections during AI Servo AF shooting is significantly faster in the Mark III camera. In other words,
in the brief fraction of a second between shots at up to 16 fps, when the mirror is in its down
position, the AF system performs more sampling operations, more separate AF readings."

Good point on the Ibis, just want to add that Fuji for example has both and they work in tandem with eachother to produce better stabilisation.

1DX mk III looks so appealing. It will be exciting to see what the camera performs like, especially the focus at 16fps and also the low light performance. Would love to see how much noise is present in challenging lighting. As a one man operation shooting video, the C300 mk II still looks by far the better choice for me.DPAF is not fully implemented on the 1DX mk III. I need to look at the impact of that on my intended video use. I like it. The investigation begins :)

Is this perhaps a kind of refresh only, similar to what Sony did and got scoffed at for?

Maybe not. You would have to get one in your hands to see.

One could always use something like the "Varavon Multifinder Uni Universal LCD ViewFinder" as a kludgy workaround to the optical view finder. Or wait another ten years for Canon to come out with an electronic viewfinder and a global shutter on the 1DX XX XXX XXXXX.

My 5D IV is able to directly uploading files to cloud storage but also to FTP servers. For example to google drive! The install process was confusing: I logged into my account over my pc while my camera was connected. BUT: it’s not always running in the background if that’s what you meant
