      @@mrg6424 I wouldn't stick to something I didn't know. I'm not actually scared of the unknown. You might consider sports photography a form of art, but I'm sure over 99% of the population does not. Hopefully there are newspapers and magazines that buy such photos at high prices to illustrate their boring pieces...and I'm not being ironical. There's nothing wrong with work of any kind, I just don't see why there's so much passion about men playing a game...if they actually play...
      But what do I know. I haven't watched sports since I was 16 years old...

    • @mrg6424

      Astral'o Pithecus If the end result of a photograph is boring, it’s usually a reflection of the photographer. Sports journalism, can be as artistic as any other form of photography. But as it’s often presented in publications, there is a lot of monotony, especially since the focus these days is more about the speed of which things get to be published, and less about the quality work. To see more of the art you have to find the right photographer, and see their personal selections in their portfolios.

    Thank you for the review of the Canon 1Dx3. I am afraid I will have to wait some time before upgrading from my 1Dx's, but it looks like an amazing camera. One question on your images. I noticed most of your images were shot with the histogram shift more to the left and a little darker than what I would shoot in those conditions. Is this typically how you would set your exposure and if so, can you explain how this helps?

    Case 5 is for more erratic movement. With my 1Dx2, I find it useful for figure skating. I use Case 4 for football and basketball, but believe that Case 5 has improved my keeper rate with figure skating. Peter noted how the 1Dx3 followed a player while running and jumping in celebration. Now imaging the speed of skater suddenly catapulting upward while rotating in the air. I think this is where Case 5 helps. Still, I must assume that the new AF improvements in the 1Dx3 no longer requires a separate Case mode to support this type of erratic movement. Peter, thanks for the review. I would love to see a real world review from the baseline of basketball game.

      Garth Scholten hey Garth. I do indoor dog sports photography with dogs jumping over hurdles in lanes (called flyball). I also shoot them straight on running at me. Do you know what case might be best for shooting the dogs from the front and the sides? Custom one also? I know you probably never shot this type of sport but what do you think? I’m moving up from a 1d mark Iv to a new one and debating the II versus III thanks

    • @garthscholten4502
      @garthscholten4502 4 роки тому +1

      @@MrGflan I haven't seen the 1Dx3 yet so I can't recommend any setting specific to it. For the 1Dx2, I would try Case 4, maybe Case 5. I use Case 4 for basketball and I would think that it will work well for the dogs. Now, if the dogs were jumping for Frisbees, maybe Case 5. I am assuming that you want to lock on to a dog and track it without the tail of another dog suddenly grabbing the focus. I would also recommend single-point focus with 4-corner expansion. (I found that 8-point expansion tends to find the background too often while tracking.)
      The biggest challenge that you may face is finding something of contrast on the dog to lock focus on, especially if the lighting is poor. I can imagine that a black lab would be more of a challenge than a white and brown collie. I shoot a lot of basketball at 1/800, f2.8 at ISO 6400-8000. On rare occasions, I can shoot at 1/1000, f4, at ISO 4000. The difference between the two isn't limited to noise. When there's more light, it's easier lock and track focus. I get twice the keepers in gyms that allow ISO 4000 over those at 6400-8000. (I would love to see pros review the 1Dx3 in a high school gym without the benefit of NBA lighting.)
      As for which body, the 1Dx3 would be my first choice. But pricing on the 1Dx2 is very attractive. You need to decide if you shoot enough to make the extra cost of the 1Dx3 worth it for your need. The more time that you invest if shooting, the more valuable the 1Dx3 could be if it increases your keeper rate or reduces post processing work.

      Garth Scholten thanks so much!! I just purchased a very clean low shutter original 1Dx. My goal is to use this camera for the tournaments I’m doing and eventually make the huge jump to a mark III when it’s out. I appreciate your feedback. I’ll try the focus point and expanded 4 points you mentioned. Do you think it prioritizes the main point so I shouldn’t miss the eye of the dog, right? I know a lot of it is practice also, and I’m moving up from my 1D mark IV. I did have a 5D Mark III at one time so I’m a bit familiar with the cases, but honestly they always made me nervous. I was always worried about changing too many things. I’ll try case 4 and the small surround you mentioned. Do you think customizing case 4 to a lower tracking sensitivity is necessary? Dogs are running at me and leaping over hurdles so there is a bit of up and down also. The other scenario I should have mentioned is them running and hitting a box with their feet and springing off. Please look up Flyball on UA-cam and you can see what I shoot. It’s a lot of fun. I usually sit on the sidelines or way down lane and get them head on. I would love a little more feedback if you can check out what flyball looks like since these are the only sports I’ve ever shot successfully besides birds in flight, which I’ve been doing for years. Thanks!

    • @garthscholten4502
      @garthscholten4502 4 роки тому

      @@MrGflan I'm glad I watched UA-cam video of Flyball. I had anticipated more of an agility event. Those dogs move! I have a German Shepherd and understand the challenges of photographing her at speed.
      I would start with Case 4 using the defaults. Given the speed that the dogs generate, it is going to be tough locking in on the eye. If there is enough light, it would be ideal to use f4, 1/1000-1/2000, at ISO 3200. ISO 6400 would by my max, but I would fear some loss of detail in the hair with noise at this ISO. Be sure to expose to the right -- set your Highlight Alert on and set exposure 1/3-2/3 stop below the point of blowing out highlights on white surfaces.
      If necessary open the aperture to f2.8 before dropping the shutter below 1/1000. But, if you are pushing your comfort level for DOF and shutter speed, 12FPS burst is your friend. If shooting from the side, pan with the dog and burst while still panning. Keep in mind that focus tracking is a predictive mode where the AF system measures activity and predicts where the subject will by when the shutter trips. It helps to activate the AF before tripping the shutter. But, it is sometimes necessary to release the AF button and reactivate it while tracking a subject if things don't look crisp in the view finder.
      When using single-point with expansion points, the system will bias toward the single point when you first activate the AF and rely on the expansion points to keep focus if you can't keep the main point on target.
      Practice, practice, practice. If possible shoot a practice event and experiment with settings and technique. Then experiment. Until you are confident with settings and technique that works, experiment so you don't put all your eggs in the same settings basket....then experiment some more.
      One of the things that I love about the 1Dx (original or Mark II) is the ease with which I can toggle between M, C1, C2, and C3. I start with setting AF and exposure settings for a grab shot using M (Manual) mode, then copy this to C1, C2, and C3. Enable Auto Update for Shooting Mode so that it remembers any changes that you make while in a custom mode. Use Restrict Shooting Modes to disable the modes that you don't need for a given shoot. I most often disable all but M and C1. Make sure that the M-Fn button is set to C (switch to custom shooting mode).
      Now you can set M to one option for AF and exposure settings and C1 to a second option. Then you can quickly toggle between these two without moving your eye from the viewfinder. I often set C1 for action with a faster shutter speed and wide open aperture, then set M for a little more DOF with a slower shutter speed and smaller aperture. Sometimes I set M to a very slow shutter speed so I can quickly experiment with slow motion blur. One tip, I often set C1 to single-point, 4-corner-expansion for action and M to something else so that is easy to spot which mode I'm in from the viewfinder.
      Enjoy your 1Dx!!

    • @PeterReadMiller
      @PeterReadMiller  4 роки тому +3

      We use aperture priority to achieve the fastest possible shutter speed. If the shutter starts to drop, we can pick it back up with ISO. Essentially, the soft background separating our subject is more important than the actual shutter speed, provided that the shutter speed is at least fast enough to freeze the action. In that sense, whether the shutter is 1/2000 or 1/4000 doesn't matter but the background remains as perfect as possible. We have other videos on the channel on this exact subject.

      newnatsfan I shoot aperture priority and keep my eye on the ISO until full dark. At that point there is only one exposure and the uniform colors and dark background can through any auto exposure off. I’m not a fan of auto ISO. Can’t say any particular reason. Just old school I guess.

    Depending on the Tracking Sensitivity setting, the AF will continue to target the subject and will lag despite very short interference. Of course the higher the sensitivity is set, the more instant the AF will change, and this is true for the 1DX1 and 2, including predecessors. Pretty much understood. Case 5 and 6 were for customized Case settings, at least for me.
    Not a big deal on the Mark III. I am after the Mark III for better AF tracking and lower noise content at higher ISO. I have the Mark II but want to add the III to replace my 1DX. Also, what happened to the camera's rubber eyepiece in this video? Lose it or what? Ha

      @@mrg6424 Oh no...I'm a fucking parasite (student) with the dream of becoming an independent film director. But as critics and philosophers have argued for thousands of years: Art and the artist are nothing without their audience. Hence, since I'm regularly part of the audience in various forms of art, I believe myself to be a good judge of what is "good" art, and if something is art at all...
      I recently wrote an essay on this subject, but it's in my native language. In short, I elaborate on how there is no way to measure or judge if art is good or not (that's why I used parentheses above). We are blessed, but also cursed with subjective tastes that are often very different from those of the next person.
      I might despise hiphop and trap music, or hate action flicks and cheesy comedies, but I don't have the right to judge such art, as long as I don't understand it. The real goal of a critic is to judge if something is truly art or not. If it was made with passion and dedication, if the creator was lazy or impatient.
      Ultimately, the best and most popular case of art not being art is what we call commercial "art". Films, Songs, Videogames, Photos or whatever piece that is actually made with profit in mind. Creators and crews that make art based on scientific data and studies, box office projections and focus groups. People that use cheap tricks and gimmicks to have success and earn a profit. e.g Action movies with car chases and gunfights but without a shred of character or story; neverending sequels and TV series. Songs with a catchy, repurposed tune and stupid words that make no sense...obviously accompanies by perverted music videos full of semi nude girls, and money, and luxury cars, and guns.
      I applied the same logic to sports photography. And I'd do the same to tabloid/paparazzi photography...
      Take care mate.
