as a huge scene queen fan since her first EPs dropped, her concerts have been the safest ive felt at a show in ages. my first time crowdsurfing was to her & set it off and my first time moshing in the pit was with her & rivals. im incredibly grateful for what she's done for feminism in metal and disability advocacy in the music scene in general (she's very vocal about performing with POTs). "the pop bits are pop and the metal bits are metal" is definitely the best way to put it.
honestly, thank you for making this video. even if it does end up more popular than others, you're bringing in a demographic that needs to hear these words coming from someone who looks like you.

This type of music has been a big thing in Japan for a long while, now. Even before Babymetal, there were bands doing this (like this genre I love called "Oshare-kei", which is colorful, poppy music that sometimes blends metal and screams into hyper joyful songs). I hate some of it, and I love some of it.

My issue with treating music like a religion is that it ignores what music is: art. You don't put rules on art, as long as you aren't breaking laws. Metal is one of the only genres where you still got bands from 30 years ago still making music, even sticking to their core sound and keeping an audience. Nobody can force change on any genre of music, only the fans accepting or rejecting the new or old.

She... Might actually be more metal than a lot of bands right now. I mean. Metal started out as this outcast community. They knew they were gonna piss a lot of people off. Like, she definitely knew she was gonna get a lot of hate from metalheads. She might get a few views from pop lovers, but that's probably not really target demographic. Took a lot of guts, she's metal af. Especially exposing the BS misogyny she faced but still advocating sexual freedom. So much respekk from me.
As for pop music parts? Electric Callboy is already doing that basically, and doing extremely well.

The lyrics on 18+ have barely to do with the metal scene, culture, or fanbase. It's mostly the warped tour bands/scene culture about so many members in those bands were accused of having relation with minors in the late 2000s-2010s. To me that's just a heavier & scene version of 29 by Demi Lovato (with the lyrics talk about similar thing).

I think that bolder genre hybrids like these are the healthiest, most exciting and best thing that have happened to the metal scene in a long, looong time. Metal with its various sub-genres used to be my main go-to music for most of my life, but its relative predictability and the widespread musically conservative mindset within the community pushed me away to explore other genres.
And pop, much to my surprise at the time, has offered me some of the most mind-bending, deep, progressive, and experimental listening experiences I've ever had. It's a common misconception that pop music must be the antithesis of alternative music. It can be just as aggressive and noisy as metal, it can be just as challenging to get into for casual radio listeners and metalheads alike. The goal of pop music isn't always to be easily digestible, despite etymologically stemming from the term "popular". Look at artists like Björk, Caroline Polachek, Dorian Electra, Charli XCX, Jockstrap or Superorganism and pay attention to the intricacies of their music making. You might not find it all enjoyable at first, but it's hard to deny its artistic value in breaking new ground, if you're openminded enough to accept that it will confront you with musical and lyrical themes you haven't appreciated (yet).
Musical preference is a matter of choice and challenging yourself with sufficient confrontation, I think.
Now, there's NOTHING wrong with sticking with more traditional metal, but dang, does it feel great to enjoy whatever you can!
Genre-bending artists like Poppy, Igorrr, öOoOoOoOoOo or Death Grips haven't taken away from my pleasure in listening metal- they've reawakened and added to it. And to answer the question if it all has gone too far, I can only say, keep going further. Its existence doesn't erase the music you already like. It only creates a new flavor that people can enjoy. If that's a problem for someone, that's on them. :3

Either you listened only to American mainstream metal and don't know about European metal scene, or you don't listen to metal at all. SepticFlesh, that's how you reinvent metal and make it fresh without losing any of the sincerity and purity of it. Sorry, pop music, unless it's some good pop, like Phil Collins or Oingo Boingo, shouldn't be fused with metal if your intent is to be taken seriously.

@@antona.8659 Most of what I've heard was predictable in terms of genre limitations/experimentation for the sake of purity. Metal has its hybrid forms, but I rarely feel the same sense of novelty that I got from Poppy's "I Disagree" pop/metal album. Or anything in Igorrr's discography, to name an example that does NOT incorporate pop esthetics. I love it, because it's a risky move. It's a stark musical contrast, instead of an accentuation that plays into the obvious strengths that metal has (such as adding an orchestra or folky instruments to make it sound more epic.)
And sure, let's talk about sincerity!
If you want to be true to your nature, you'll need to embrace your vulnerable, corny, goofy, curious, playful and "guilty pleasure" side too, because you're a complex being and not everything that defines you is metal.
Now, if you enjoy metal and pop in equal parts, wouldn't a pop/metal hybrid be the most sincere and self-expressive music you could possibly make?

    • @Sylkis89
      @Sylkis89 3 місяці тому +6

Okay I actually listen to some of her songs after watching this video. Whether she's metal or not depends on whether you classify core as metal or not. Most people don't really distinguish them nowadays since punk and metal have been mixing and influencing each other for so long both ways that it's a spectrum with no clear line between them. She's definitely core and heavy enough to be in these murky grey areas that could be or not be classed as metal. BUT THIS IS NOT BECAUSE OF THE POP COMPONENTS TO HET MUSIC. THESE DO NOT AFFECT THE METAL-NESS IF HER MUSIC AT ALL. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF IT AWAY AT ALL. The way she incorporates pop in her metal/core is arguably more raw and aggressive than when bands like Slipknot start singling cute sugary clean vocals choruses after a heavy riff driven stanza. Arguably in case of bands like Slipknot adorable choruses take a lot of the metal-ness from songs like Psychosocial, but nobody will argue they're not metal. Arguing it in her case is even more laughable IMO and is clearly just a matter of prejudice towards the visual aesthetic.

Man I worked for an alternative radio station late 90s early odds, and whenever a "female" hard band came out everyone was fascinated, but like the same way you would at a freak show. And I was no different: remember interviewing a smallish all female band at the Warped Tour (god can't remember who) and I kept circling back to the fact they were girls. I really didn't mean anything by it, and I was just really interested in how that made them unique, but the signer kinda took it differently and god offended after a few questions in that direction. At first I was taken aback and sort of offended myself (maybe a bit because there was really not much to their music IMO) but a few years later I got it: they just wanted to play their beats and be part of it, and I'm guessing they got a LOT of tasteless shit backstage too. That's what I called the "Zoo Period" (you go and gawk, then go back home and forget about it).
Then bands like Kitty in the "real" metal scene, Nightwish in the "look we do opera" crown (they were actually stellar people, met with me for an interview at brunch after they couldn't make it the night of their show... great folk), and a metric ton of other bands with females started taking off in popularity. Then came Evanescence. Boy did they ever get hate. I still hear a shameful amount of people saying how this was just done for the "trend" and it was because they wanted radio play... well yeah! It's the early 2000s, that's the ONLY way you can make it! Anyway, after a while it became clear that all female or female fronted bands weren't just a trend, and that they made some solid music, and yet they still got tons of hate just because it was perceived as being different.
Now we have amazing bands with female singers or musicians that make some of the best metal out there, or at least objectively, contribute to metal music in a meaningful way, and not just in this little crease of the scene they were bestowed like it was 20 years ago. No, real impact with real music. Whoever talks about the purity of the scene, or what's metal and what's not, or who should or shouldn't be praised or hated really are only using their opinions as facts. If you don't like it, for whatever reason, just don't fucking listen to it and move on! No one is forcing you to listen to anything. Unless you're a permanent resident in Guantanamo but I digress. Bottom line is I bob my head at Scene Queen, it's not bad workout music actually. Some of those breakdowns are pretty hard too. Would I go see a show? Eh maybe if they were with another band I really like. Shit I'd go to a Baby Metal show to see how that goes and I'm not really big on their music. And if she's fighting against the machine, then by fuck good on her!!! This is not my fight, but I can certainly respect a warrior...
Metal started out by disenfranchised youths trying to carve themselves an identity and a culture they felt safe in. We all think this way at some point. But we need to ask ourselves: who the fuck are we to tell other people how they should be? Because that really only makes us the people that the first metalheads wanted to steer away from.
Dear god that was a long post. Sorry. Great vid!

It is so nice to hear an actual, informative review that highlights the artistry behind Scene Queen. I am typically more drawn to the death and thrash subgenres, so Scene Queen is very different for me and you hit exactly why I was drawn to them, including in the sound. Sure, there’s a heavy pop influence but there’s also very “traditionally” heavy elements that I hope people don’t overlook.

I've got no problem with this music existing - but it's worth asking what "lane" of music it belongs in.
There's an uncanny valley between "Metal with Pop elements" and "Pop with Metal elements" - and we are pretty much crossing into the latter. Also - the type of "Metal" in her music is Metalcore which is already a hybrid genre - and the "heavy parts" are hardcore-esque breakdowns - ie. music from the Punk/Hardcore realm, not the Heavy Metal realm.
Again - there is no issue with this existing but the fact that Metal Hammer push this act as well as Sleep Token so much really puts me off Metal Hammer.
I don't mind scrolling past music I'm not into but when it gets to the point where it's annoyingly oversaturated with this kind of stuff - I am more inclined to follow other, more "exclusionary" outlets/pages.
I think if we called this Metal Pop instead of Pop Metal - there would be a bit more of a tolerance for it.
It's a subgenre of Pop music that includes Metalcore elements, that's fair enough. Why don't we embrace that instead?

I recently discovered scene queen. she's killing it! her, babymetal, and poppy are doing the pop metal thing right! It feels very refreshing to do something super different. I'm a music nerd and LOVE metal and hard rock. I love how scene queen is taking advantage of good algorithmic song titles with fun lyrics. metal has taken itself too seriously the last 30 years. this new stuff feels very 80s in spirit of let's have fun and make good music. very refreshing to say the least. this is what music is supposed to be: entertainment and fun! since the late 2000s metal has taken itself waay too seriously and focused on perfection in production and technical skill. while that's necessary, i'd rather have a fun catchy song that is super heavy still (with good meaningful lyrics). Metal started as a performance and theater of the occult. it started about doing shit no one else did. Glad the trend is continuing.
Personally my dream was to have boy band pop hooks and vocal style with heavy metal. so far I've only collaborated with singer-songwriters on my metal tracks (to be released soon).

Most all metal is good, though I admit I was never big on the nu metal thing back in the day but I'm not going to disparage it or any of the artists. Any metal is better than today's country music. And yet, back in the 80s some of the metal bands like Warrant and Roxx Gang out of Florida would incorporate some banjo and southern rock vibes in some of their songs. Heck, I've heard some southern rock bands that were as heavy as many of the metal acts around. It's all good. In defence of gatekeeping: I am from the punk scene, so I don't have a dog in this particular fight. But we have a similar issue over in our corner. I don't have a problem with any of this music and I'm sure it will all find it's audience, but this latest generation of music makers doing the genre mashup as if they are the first to do so (as if Hayseed Hardcore wasn't a thing in 1983), but beyond being blind to history, even all that is cool, at points. My problem comes when you can apparently tack on the word 'punk' (or 'metal' for all yall )to anything, just because you want the street crew, or whatever, it just diminishes the meaning of punk (or metal). Basically, in my opinion, anything beyond one adjective immediately takes you out of 'the family'. Hardcore punk, that's punk. Anarcho-punk, that's punk. Cottagecore minimalist synth punk? That's definitely something, and I wish them the best, but it's not punk. 🤷‍♂

Thanks to this video popping up on UA-cam, I've found another fun and original artist with a sense of humour and originality, so cheers for that!
However, using a few comments from one article as being proof of misogyny in the metal scene is a bad argument. This is mainly because none of those comments are about disliking the music because it is made by a woman in the first place. Even if they were, what reason would there be to assume that they would represent as many people as your video implies?
You've projected your own assumptions on to those comments when, at face value, those people appear to just not like the music or image, which is their prerogative.
