  • I shot and edited this vlog down and dirty to get it up quick. People are dying outside! WE MUST ALL DO SOMETHING!
Chris Biehn who is an Ithaca College Student and started an organization to help the homeless people in Ithaca invited me down for a visit. We met up with Carmen Guidi, a local businessman who started building tiny homes to help our homeless neighbors.
In 2013, Carmen gave me a tour of Ithaca's tent city known as the Jungle and I wore Google Glass to share more of an immersive experience [ • The Jungle (homeless t... ]. While walking with Carmen talking about the tents that are catching fire I remembered the person Carmen introduced me to in this video died the following day after his tent bust into flames! THE NEED IS URGENT!
Many of the people that live in this tent city are employed. They just cannot afford rent. Chris explains that Ithaca is the 8th most expensive city in the U.S. and had only a 1% vacancy rate. The cost of housing has skyrocketed to the point living in a tent in the woods is now affordable housing.
Ithaca is a rural community in Upstate New York. Although the cost of housing is high the funding for social services you'd see in a larger city is not available. There literally is no place for all of the homeless people to go to get the help they need.
Sadly, this is not just an Ithaca problem but a crisis happening all over America. Unless we do something about the increasing lack of affordable housing in this country homelessness will continue to grow!
TJ and Alie share their story here • Homeless Couple's Love...
Here is their GoFundMe page www.gofundme.com/homelesswedding
Please help support the people like Chris that are working to help the homeless men and women in Ithaca's tent encampment / ithacahomeless

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as UA-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

God bless you Mark! You are fighting the good fight. I have a brother named Mark who has been homeless and in and out of jails since his 20s and he's now in his 50s. He's a survivor and keeps positive. If we could get more politicians who are caring and could fight and push for affordable housing that would surely help. Keep positive buddy and take care of yourself get good rest and eat well. There is a song about homeless people called "pray for me" by Rob Crosby. On youtube if you listen to it it will touch your heart and soul. Thanks again Mark...

Folks we have adored as long we have, paid taxes to, etc., can be judge, jury and yes I have had to see them. Every day. While your sentiment of not wanting to contribute to animal death is noble, your judging of others and ridiculing gifts bestowed the needy is very.... well... not very classy. Be like the prophet Daniel or Nanak but Jesus said not to Judge your brothers who partake, likewise, those who partake should not judge those who do not. The logic this scripture applies to "using the erb", it applies here, as there is no LAW AGAINST eating meat, its a person's option to step up to a more pious lifestyle, but they must do so without attempting to judge and shame others not in like mind.

I am from the UK. I have just discovered this channel. it breaks my heart to see people struggling. I was homeless myself for 19 months. I lived in a forest in a tent, a beaten up caravan in the scottish highlands, and in my car. i also did a live in job. I struggled, but i did it. i know i would have coped much better in a community like this one. I felt so unsafe and alone, even though i was with my partner and 2 dogs. I am now housed, but the adventurer in me misses the open space. i am also struggling to keep this small flat ( apartment). i think once you have a taste of getting out of the system, it is hard to get back in to it. I wish all the best for these people. They clearly care for each other. they are right, no one should be living like this, unless it is their choice to do so. The UK is terrible and the rise of homelessness is becoming higher by the year.

I was homeless 33 years ago for two years and I understand the battle and the battles not bad enough with the elements and the fact that people treat you like a pariah. Little do those people know it could be them tomorrow. Keep up the good work Mark and I'll be sitting here praying that you get to help someone everyday and hopefully my disability will get better so I can do the same. I was only 20 to 21 years old when I was homeless and now due to being disabled I am one foot out the door to being homeless again and I thank God everyday for my family oh, if it were not for my mother and father I probably wouldn't be here. I'll be praying for you and all those that help and most importantly all those that are still living on the street to survive. Thanks for all you do and God bless! :-)

gerry morgan The folks in those apartments go in and close their doors. They rarely interact with their neighbors more than just in passing and they are dependent on no one. When you know your neighbors it’s because you see them more than just in passing. Realizing that we need each other is the fundamental difference between the folks in the apartments and the ones in the tents. Maybe it is economics, not having everything you need, but that’s not all of it. When you’re poor you have to ask for help, but you choose who you ask. The folks that are in the same situation are easier to ask for help from, because they know how it feels and it just makes it easier. If they can’t help they will bend over backwards to find someone who can and chance are it’s going to be someone that’s in the homeless community. It becomes a network. So sometimes you depend on them and they depend on you, you become friends and a community. I think total self reliance, which seems to be part of the great American dream, can make a human a lonely creature. I’ve seen whole families go into their house close the doors and every one of them go into separate rooms and close those doors. And they are seen as having attained the great American dream. It’s just so lonely.
Sorry I didn’t realize how long this comment was getting. Bye!

Dianne Looney Congress hasn't raised the wage in over 10 years slick! Spain just upped the wage to over 11 an hr, most of Europe is more than America, at what 8 bucks an hr? And save the rederick about planning ahead, when you lose your long time job due to bankruptcy at 50 you have to start over, or have a learning problem, couldn't afford college after high school, lived with a silver spoon in your mouth for decades and didn't work then ran out of money and had to go out and work at 50, 10 bucks an hr don't get it! It costs a dollar a piece for a apple today, cost of living has leapfrogged in the last 10 year's but wage hasn't, and so many are fucked in the states today for it. Thanks congress

Wool socks, bring them wool not cotton. Wool is an excellent insulator and maintains its insulation when wet. If some of these people have jobs they might consider buying a van. I've been forced to move into one with my disabled son. We live in the Boston area where rents are some of the highest in the country and all we have for income is my social security retirement and my son's disability check. I have created a UA-cam channel to chronicle our transition from lifelong apartment dwellers to permanent van dwellers and share my tips for building habitable shelter in a van on a low budget, it's called VANgazmic Voyage. I applaud you for your work with the homeless, you are truly doing the Lord's work and God bless us all!

    • @jamesandrew62
      @jamesandrew62 6 років тому +2

A van has to be dryer than a tent, would have to to be insulated though, & mould might be a problem to keep at bay.

    • @donaldwhitehead1170

jamesandrew62 Yes. Ventilation is as critical as insulation. I have a roof vent fan that runs off a 12 volt deep cycle marine battery that charges when the engine runs.

Instead of living in a van why not get out of Boston? I'll give one example of a fairly big city with rents about a third of Boston: Tucson, AZ. You can get a 2br apartment in a safe area for $500 all day long there. Added benefit: no snow ever. A little closer to home: South NJ. The little towns between Philly & Atlantic City are fairly safe & way cheaper than anything near Boston. Tucson is the better bet just for the weather; I intend to retire there someday.

    • @donaldwhitehead1170
      @donaldwhitehead1170 6 років тому +4

EntropyFan This is our home, we are deeply rooted here. My mother was born and raised in East Boston, I have dozens of family members scattered throughout the area. My children were born and raised in Salem and now my grandchildren are growing up here. My son is brain damaged from epileptic seizures five years ago and all his specialists are at Massachusetts General hospital, one of the finest in the world. And Boston's north shore and Cape Ann is a beautiful place to live, if you can afford it. Living rent free in the van has made it affordable. It's not as uncomfortable as you might think van dwelling in winter. I'm chronicling our voyage on my own UA-cam channel called, "Vangazmic Voyage," please visit and you'll see what I mean. Best of luck in your retirement.

    ***Bless you all***
Gabriel Brothers had turtle necks. I recently bought a few women's. I love them in the winter. My husband and I are OTR Trucker's. We sleep on a twin bed every night and live out of our semi as we save money to get another home. We have 4 grown children. My husband was a Coal Miner for years and they went under do to the EPA. He then went into GAS & Oil, same thing, they stacked all the rig's and again out of work. We live in a area that you either make 100k plus or your on welfare. We lost everything the 2nd time around. Even our 401k is gone. So we are trucking and hoping to clear 70k and get a home again. What's nice about these trucking companies is if you have a clean license, no recent DUI's they will train you and give you money while doing so. Feed and house you as well. It's great opportunity for homeless. If anyone looks into this check out Prime and Rohel Transport. They are two company's that treat you as a person and not a number. My husband got his CDL after high school as a back up in the future. When in-between career jobs he would truck. We've researched so much and failed with several company's. At the moment we are purchasing a semi through Rohel with no money down. We are never negative or in the hole and that's what matters. They offer health insurance after 2 to 3 months, retirement and so on. Perfect for those who are homeless but can drive and take no "scheduled" drugs. They will put you on a bus and get you started within 2 weeks. Driving isn't hard as long as you don't take narcotics, insulin by injection, or ADHD, mood stabilizer drugs.
    Best wishes everyone!

If you wanted to send some of them down to Pottsville PA I have a vacant home they could use to protect them from the cold. No electric or water though. Possibility to get the electric turned on. If you group together in one of the large rooms and block off everything you can heat pretty well with a small kerosene heater. I did it for 10 years was a bit ruff but managed ok.

If I had money, I would buy land, build a bunch of homes with air/heat/water/toilets and fill them with people and animals. No one (cats, dogs, non-native animals included) should have to suffer these temperatures outside. It's torture. The temperatures have been below zero, and I heard a couple of days ago about a guy freezing to death while walking home from somewhere. It's scary to think about just how easily one of these people or dogs could die in that tent city. If each person with a spare bedroom or even anyone that could offer access to an enclosure or garage with electricity could help one homeless person, these people could be helped RIGHT NOW. I hope the people in this town or nearby consider it.

That could happen. Who owns the property? No sense building shelters if they can be "evicted" at any moment. How did the camp come to be in this particular spot?

I love his spirit, he's full of joy but poverty is on the rise in America, with the heartless people who is raising rent every 2 days and mortgages are so high. We're one pay cheque from poverty.

My landlord is a greedy dog..he raised the rents..we lost some tenants here..he had the gall to say that due to Covid..he could raise the rent cause the virus is making prices go higher..what a slap in the face!!

It's much worse here in the Pacific NorthWET... POORland is a sister city south of FREEattle...has become a complete isht-show with rioters burning down and destroyed EVERYTHING for everyone...recently we had most EPIC firestorms that burned thousands of homes and numerous deaths...funny how the protesters were no where in downtown...but I have recorded video proof of fires being set all around us. WHO set these fires? And WHY? Interesting how the group whose name starts with an A...letters N and T..THEN an I ending with FA...promised to return to destroy our little town Estacada because we refused to allow them destroy our 20 ft tall wooden Timberman they said is racist as it's white man...but it's a statue representing the timber industry which were ALL white men working in pouring rain out in the forest...but when their numerous big busses began arriving filled WITH AID, well fed and provided for young angry people gathered to fulfil their promises to destroy estacada to the ground...they were unprepared for the numerous shirtless, toothless uneducated backwards "Hillbillies" ( is how the buss riding big A---tiFAs description of those living in our beautiful area) they were unprepared to be met with several of us, armed with long guns, AK47s and enough firearms to take them ALL down...and the group of REAL MEN ready to protect OUR statue, so they changed their plans...but hours later our firestorms began....but we're strong and refuse to give in to these idiots.

BTW... These riots have NOT stopped and last weekend Portland was declared full on riot zone....we're SICK of these monsters...would rather have homeless people leaving piles of trash behind rather than our entire downtown buildings burned & totally destroyed..a lot of blacks have lost their lifelong HARD work by these, ha..BLM movement...throwing bricks, moltove cocktails into Windows is NOT peaceful demonstration...but liberal leaders refuse to stop them...why? Freedom of speech....uh...what the heck? Months of THIS has worn residents down...were thinking of MOVING far from here

I was homeless for three years, but really only on the streets for 6 months. I'll never forget my first desert winter. I got so close to God that winter.
I've started getting out after watching your videos. I'm a new subscriber. I hope it's ok I'm kinda copying your delivery by filming the local bridge people I drive by everyday now taking my son to his job.
I can't keep throwing a couple of bucks with a hug to them.
It's gonna take a lot more so I thought I'd get started.
    Thanks for all you do.
Your work through this channel has really changed my life, and I'm so grateful. I feel like you're my friend ! ♥️

Bob encourages people who already have housing to give it up and live in their cars in the desert. Wait until those old women in their 30 year old cars and vans end up abandoned in the middle of nowhere. The same sense of unreality that makes them think that living in the desert is better than a heated apartment with water and a toilet, is what got them in their situations in the first place. Meanwhile Bob laughs all the way to the bank.

Steven Michel You obviously haven't done your homework! I have! You have higher elevations to go to so you can always live in comfortable temperatures. Since you want to call people names, you need to go look in the mirror and you will see a real live IDIOT! Until you have a clue as to what you are talking about, do us all a favor and keep your mouth shut.

I happen to love President Trump so you're WRONG AGAIN. I'm not an armchair expert. I have lived tiny 3 times and will do so again. Maybe you were playing Army? I don't care what you think you know. I know what I know and being called an idiot on a keyboard actually makes you the armchair expert. There ya go big boy. This video is about homeless people and trying to get them help and making what is hopefully a helpful suggestion to help someone, so, why don't you aim your keyboard elsewhere and go help someone else.
