  • In this eye-opening video, we follow the story of James McGilvery, who chooses to experience what it's like to be homeless during Canada's harsh winter. With temperatures nearing minus 20 degrees, James finds solace in a makeshift tent off Recreation Avenue, a space designated by the city for those in need. Despite the availability of shelters, James opts for this personal experiment to understand the reality of surviving the cold outdoors.
Through the interview, we learn about James's setup: a sleeping bag, pallets for insulation from the ground, blankets, plastic bags for moisture protection, and hand warmers for additional warmth. His surprising revelation that he considers this situation "good" for him challenges viewers to think about homelessness and the human spirit's resilience.
This video not only highlights the critical issue of homelessness in Canada but also sheds light on individual experiences within the broader context of social support systems and their accessibility. Join the conversation in the comments below and share your thoughts on this compelling story.

      Genuine Experiment? Yeah right.
You can't be going around all day everyday outside in -20 weather and not be cold. I don't care who you are.
You breathe in that cold air all day. Pulling pallets and pushing a cart makes you breath in that cold air even deeper. Feet freezing and possible frost bite. Every hour that you are outside in that frigid weather you feel colder.
So if you have been outside in the weather for 8, 10, 12, or 15 hours then you will be much colder than somebody who has been out in that weather for 1 or 2 hours. I think your care body temperature drops or something.
If you have been out in the cold for 1 or 2 hours you will warm up much quicker than somebody who has been out in the freezing cold for 8 or 10 hours. That can take many hours to warm up.
Trying to push a cart, carry a heavy back pack, luggage, bags of belongings, pallets, and such for miles while freezing cold, sick, hungry, having lung diseases or other chronic diseases and frozen feet can be draining or near impossible.

There is some truth to that, but it also shows that you lack experience with *TRULY* having no security. And there warm or atleast warmer. I was homeless at 13 in nyc but by 15 I had a job and apartment those two years sucked but I was granted every opportunity I jus didn’t realize it. I had been offered food and room aswell as jobs but I’d always decline because I didn’t recognize this as my escape from hunger and the cold. It wasn’t untill a old rich white lady asked me if I wanted left overs. When I said no she told me if I’m happy where I am then I don’t need to try anymore. However if my situation is one I’m not “suppose” to be in then I better fight to get out of it. She then showed me the nazi numbers on her arm and said her family was homeless too. I didn’t understand untill later on but this lady had been a victim of the Holocaust and now she’s Uber wealthy on 5th ave. I now have a job and a family and am not homeless. I have a nice home.

There's some really nice sleeping bags available, in oversize so you can stretch out!!, that'll keep you comfy below zero, and they're not down, so they're actually much easier to take care of. This is a skewed picture of homelessness, at least if unthinking people sees it. He did it voluntarily as an experiment,is young and healthy, whereas in reality, one is traumatized and often influenced by ill health of some kind. And social isolation, mobbing, outsiderdom is the hardest thing, not the homelessness in itself. The fact that they can be so cruel and evoct someone who hasn't done anything wrong. I am not strong enough to sit begging outdoors.I tried streetmusic ,it was nice for Christmas,i forgot my fear and exposure while giving others joy for a moment, but was too exhausted to sing outdoors in winter.cold..i suffer from Aspergers and Bekhterew's,and don't know how to ask for help in a way that I get heard and given it. Is it because I súffer from complex trauma, and now have little nerve energy and maybe a less good radiation? but surely social security have seem how well and productive people can be o+if they get safe, sleep, food and social support?
If someone good would take me in /on for a short period of time, I could get sleep and food and recover enough to sort myself out and find a course of action with some efficient support.
I think there are rich people who are sick who could profit from having me live in an extra room, since I have healing gifts and know natural medicine and therapies. That'd be great!

James's situation is creating employment for that reporter & network -
least they could do is pay for a weeks motel so James can access hot water & some humanity -
He couldn't get James to state why it was preferable to the Mission.
They could be more hands on with a homeless solution.

Well he's got layers of clothes, the hoodie, sleeping bag enclosed with a makeshift tent and stuff, and lots of covers, he can stay warm for sure, but I do agree it the set up does not look comfortable, but that's about it. I mean the tent could be better but sometimes you gotta make things work

The cool thing he's at peace with it I can understand that. It's probably the one time in his life he feels he can be left alone. I don't blame him i wouldn't go to the shelter either being under someone else's rules and control. Peace is all this guy wants.
