  • Streaming with a slower chat can be INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT for new Streamers! Did you know if a new viewer types something in YOUR chat, they are 50% MORE likely to come back to YOUR channel!
This means giving viewers a reason to talk in your chat is crucial if you want to grow your average viewers, and create a successful channel.
I asked 4000 Twitch users about how active they are in chat, and what makes them more likely to engage with a streamer… and you will be amazed how little it takes for them to actually chat, today we are covering easy tips to get more chatters on Twitch!

How To Grow Your Average Viewers & Get More Chatters On Twitch:
First things first in this giant list, one of the most powerful ways to increase chat activity is… well... having chatters already… I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but I promise it’s important to understand and yes, there are tips for people with no viewers in this video later but I need to get this out of the way.
Nothing makes someone more likely to chat than seeing others already engaging, if you’re new or just starting out, I recommend asking some friends to hang out in your chat and have a chat with you, it helps boost your average viewers, and if someone new drops by and can join in on the conversation than those friends can greet the new viewer, and welcome them into both the conversation and the community.
The important thing to remember here is they need to be able to join in, if the back and forth is super in-depth, unrelatable, or personal then-new viewers will likely leave rather than try to join in.

How To Use Open-Ended Questions To Get More Chatters?
If you’ve ever desperately googled the question, “How to make friends” like I did as a teenager, then you’ll know that one of the best ways to start conversations and get to know people is by using open-ended questions. Granted we aren’t looking to make friends, but the concept is the same.
If you have a few chatters, or viewers and want to engage them than asking yes or no questions isn’t the right approach, you should ask open ended questions that allow for elaboration, such as “Man, I watched my favourite movie the other day Stardust, and it got me thinking, what are your favorite movies?”
What Games Increase Chat Activity On Twitch?
There are games specifically designed to increase chat activity such as Words On Stream, Marbles On Stream, Gartic On Stream, and Mods that allow Chat to control the game from chat.
All of these have a component that allow the chat to engage with the game and can be massive to increase activity, and again it also feeds back into my first tip that people will be more active if they see others being active.
If you’re looking for segments you can do in Just chatting that increase activity, and spark conversation then I recommend looking at Tier Lists, Bracket Fights, Buzzfeed quizzes, and one of my favorites Google Feud.
The style of this video is similar to Alpha Gaming and Gaming Careers in parts. A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Wild4games and Nutty.

The "a quiet chat doesn't mean a streamer is boring..." comment resonates TOO well with me, I deal with it all the time! I need to start reminding myself of that because when my chat is dead, my anxiety kicks in and I subconsciously tell myself I'm doing a bad job, whereas my viewers literally tell me "we're just enjoying the vibe and the experience"!

  • @CozyGamerKat
    @CozyGamerKat 2 роки тому +67

Such an interesting video! I really appreciate your last bit about lurkers and focusing on the game so you can make other content for different platforms. I really value my chatting aspects of my streams, but you're right - if you want to grow, at some point you need to focus more on the content than the relationship between streamer and chat. Probably more relevant for mid-sized streamers than small streamers like myself, but such an interesting point. I'm incredibly curious to see how you navigate this in your stream! As a semi-lurker in your chat it's interesting to see you shift things in small ways, I think you're on the right track, can't wait to see how you'll adapt to more a content-oriented streamer!

  • @kjgibbmusic
    @kjgibbmusic 2 роки тому +34

Chat bots and commands are a really great idea! I feel like some of them would work a lot better for smaller streamers than others, but definitely getting some kind of activity in chat is so important since it's impossible to engage with viewers if you don't know they're there

These are actually some great tips for a small content creator. The main focus of Twitch is just that! Chatting with viewers, and playing the game at the same time. Not just ignoring your chat members, because they joined YOUR stream so they'd find someone to talk to about that genre.

Eljay! You glorious man! Ty so much for all the content and hard work you put into these videos! I fell victim to putting individual chatters over what I was trying to do on stream. It effects the play and fellow streamers so much. It's a fine balance and I feel I'm getting better at it. Definitely a balancing act that takes time to master.

I stream with a group, usually we are in Discord. Who ever is running stream that day has chat open on their second screen, and those of us not running the stream do the same.
That way all of us can and do respond to chat. When we run our strategy games chat gets hyper active with suggestions or just stuff messing with us for the way we are playing. Next step is getting some emotes and stuff set up for channel points.

I've noticed the final point myself. Sometimes when I'm editing and an important bit comes up that needs to be in a UA-cam video it gets cut off by me talking to chat about something completely different or in the past was blown out by some sound alert that I had installed. It's hard to find a good balance between keeping the streams engaging and the UA-cam video good quality. I really I hope I'll be able to grow as a creator and as a person in 2022, but sometimes life gets in the way too. It's a tough journey, but I'm positive about it. Thanks for all the help you've given me so far Eljay!

It's Intimidating!! And when I asked other content creators a lot of them sort of got offended and acted as if they needed to gatekeep the information. So finding your channel has really helped me a lot with the learning process, and helped me gain some self confidence along the way. My goal is never to be some big famous streamer I really just wanted a way to interact with the community and have fun playing games and also build myself up a little bit too cause I've always been introverted and a little camera shy... anyways I just wanted to say I really appreciate you and the content. 😊

So much of your content has helped me blaze a path with Twitch. Before I started streaming, I had never been on twitch, so I’m learning how twitch works as a creator and a consumer to be part of the culture. Thanks Eljay, I really appreciate all your wisdoms :)

You bring out amazing videos man specially this because I am struggling sometimes with it hahah I play Apex Legends as my main game (lets say im pretty good at it ;p) but its an very fast paced FPS shooter which means there are sometimes just moments I cant really focus on chat because of a long fight full of action right. But I always come back to my chat and reply to everything I missed when I have even the slightest downtime in the game. I really like the idea of getting the chat to kinda talk/debate with each other about topics I give yea so they keep themselves busy as well I def need to implement that more!
Keep up the good work man! One day ill be a big boi haha :P

this is so helpful!!! Sometimes it’s just hard because yeah, I keep asking questions but I feel like no one is listening to me or bother to answer so I feel chat is dead, but hopefully those commands will truly help me to have a more alive chat :))

Hello! I love watching your videos. Last night I streamed and I had one friend join in the chat to keep me company and I kept the vibe going for the whole stream. Afterwards my friend said, "what a great stream!" I replied mentioning they were the only one watching and they were like "um no you had another person hang around most of the stream and three people at one point". Thank you for all the tips!

I just came across your channel and I just wanna say thankyou! You are giving me so many ideas for my Twitch channel! I just hit affiliate and I am gonna try to incorporate a lot of advices you give. A question about the commands though, would you recommend it to also put them under a little "Commands" panel on your Twitch? Or just the title of your stream?

Me and my friend regularly try to talk to each other during streams and it’s seemed like it has helped them a lot. As well as I’ve found closed captions you can decide to have on stream to help people, as someone with auditory processing issues myself who relies heavily on CC

I'm trying to start streaming again and I just found your channel. I've been binging your videos and I love them so much! Thank you.
I have a kappamon that can be interacted with in the chat, and while it was only used once or twice in the last stream, it's still something and it helps the interaction.
I'm hesitant to use the timer thing though... if people aren't talking, won't the same timed message appear again and again?

I also love the overlay you were using at min 15:30 , is it possible to find it anywhere since now you use a different one for your stream? Thanks again man, keep up the great job and the positive attitude!

  • @CodyHollis21

I knew you would, but glad the video ended with the reminder of lurkers. I try to randomly just sneak a thank you in to the lurkers on occasion. Because it really is the home base of viewership! If anybody reading this has trouble with topics, there are books and sites out there with plenty of thought provoking questions! I'm a motor mouth that can talk any topic, but wanted some channel point ideas. I have a Dad Joke book. A Would You Rather book. And a What If book. Usually somebody redeems one and then it creates a waterfall. We actually ended up in a pretty heated debate a couple weeks back about if you'd rather a pet dragon or pet unicorn. All while I was doing a Stone Cold Steve Austin impression for a more expensive redemption. Sometimes the questions flop but we get into some ridiculous topics and it's always really fun to see a first time chatter (thank you twitch for that update) getting involved in one of those topics!
