    It’s really very simple: weasels are weasily distinguishable and stoats are stoatally different.

    I was really chuffed to have a stoat in the back garden. (N Wales border near Llangollen).
    I dug out a little hollow under the fence to give access to the woodland behind. The hedgehogs use it as an underpass and keep the plants pretty slug free. They now have a nightly 'circuit' and I see them regularly.
    Really enjoyed the video. Have a great weekend.

    Great, really enjoyable and informative as ever. I do think you can safely generalise about mustelids in that they all seem to punch way above thier weight in terms of predation, I myself have seen rabbits being chased by stoats or weasels, when I was a kid in rural Yorkshire, and assumed they were playing. Then when I saw a big rabbit having its throat torn out by a tiny mustelid, I realised.. "Nature, red in tooth and claw"..
    Nice one Liam! 🌟👍

    Mustelids are my favourite animals too. Very informative video. Although, I believe at 0.20 this clip is actually a female stoat indicated by colouration, ear size, shape and position - weasels ears sit tighter to the body, the lack of an isolated brown patch behind the lower jawline which all common weasels have and on this individual a straight fur line going down the neck.

    • @AShotOfWildlife
      @AShotOfWildlife  2 місяці тому

      Thanks Robert. I questioned that one myself but came to the conclusion it was a weasel. Here is the full video I got that clip from, the fur line isn't straight when it's at a different angle. Let me know what you think ua-cam.com/video/z-4zyBDXjRw/v-deo.htmlsi=UJCN3mQTTDsOOWkm

    • @RobertEFuller
      @RobertEFuller 2 місяці тому +1

      When you only see the head it can be tricky but it’s a stoat colouring is more red ginger and weasels sandy ginger
      It’s the patch behind the jaw on the weasels is a give away and ears sick out more on a Stoat’s

    Really pleased you did this video Liam. These species really are mysterious…. So difficult to find and see., I feel blessed at the moment as we have both stoats & weasels this year. I’ve seen both recently, as we have a lot of prey animals such as rats, rabbits, voles, small birds, and pheasants . Last year we saw a stoat family moving their babies presumably to a new home, and this year I saw a weasel hunting in a log pile. We are certainly seeing less rats and rabbits recently. Awesome video, for me one of the best yet 👌 thank you. 🙏

    Wonderful! Thanks very much for this one. I love this family and used to keep polecat ferrets in Scotland in the 1980s. Otters have always been very common in Scotland as they were never hunted there and I used to see them often. I believe stoats have the largest, single, weight ratio of preditor/prey in the world. So pleased the pine martin is having a comeback. Now I live in SW France where the pine martin is common and also the beech martin and often have problems with the Badgers who eat our tomatoes

    Where I live in Pennsylvania the main Mustelid is the Skunk. We do have weasels and wild mink. Otters are in the state ( I should say Commonwealth) But, we have a good population. In spite of the reputation, skunks are okay unless you surprise them. Often times a feral cat spooks them and when you go out in the morning the backyard or the area around the trash cans will reek of skunk! Thanks for the education on more of the UK natural world! Safe travels and cautious steps and God bless you on the travels!

    • @Clive697
      @Clive697 2 місяці тому

      Here in Britain we learned the US has skunks from the cartoons: Pepe la Pew who made plants wilt when he passed them. The native Americans gave the stinkers their name from 'the fox that urinates', although it's not a fox of course.
      Only last week I handed a British animal which uses the same defence strategy - the Grass Snake which exudes a foul-smelling goo from anal glands like the skunk - though the latter's sprayed odour is much more potent and effective. It really honks, I've read! Glad we don't have them here.

    Funny you should post this now. Saw a weasel for the first time over in Walthamstow marshes in London last week. Tiny little thing, like a sausage on legs. Must have only been about 20cm long, so assumed it was a weasel rather than a stoat.
    Came out of the undergrowth onto the path for a few seconds, took a quick sniff and look around, then shot off back to where it emerged from. All over in about 5 seconds.
    I had a camera with me but it all happened too fast to get any footage.

      The first time I saw weasels two were hunting together along a drystone wall. They sneaked from the wall through tall grass to attack rabbits grazing on a mound. Both raced to converge on the last rabbit to see them and bolt for their burrows. Within seconds they were both dragging the bigger rabbit toward the wall, having savaged its throat to subdue it. The pair had quite a job squeezing the prey item through a small hole in the wall where they were living.

    What's your opinion of the battle between otters and anglers. The otters are often accused of decimating fish stocks... All my local rovers have lots of otters and the fish stocks are declining but I feel pollution and habitat loss is more of a factor. Be interesting to hear the thoughts of someone as knowledgeable as yourself on the subject.

    • @AShotOfWildlife
      @AShotOfWildlife  Місяць тому +1

      Hi Barry. I user to be an angler, it's actually one of the ways I got into wildlife (if you look back, I have several underwater fish videos on the channel). I can sympathise with anglers who report declining fish stocks, but the truth is, it simply cannot be because of otters. In the 1940s there were more otters than there are now and yet fish stocks were also much higher. I think polution and invasive species should be tackled before the blame goes to a native predator. I also think if a fishery is going to spend hundreds of thousands on large Carp, they should spend 20k on an otter fence.

I've also seen on 2 occasions either a Mink or Stoat, couldn't tell as it was dark. The second time, it saw me, dived in the water and swam 6 feet to my right, I could see the bubbles rise as it swam, same spot a grass snak e dropped down the bank and slithered under my chair!😂
