- Come and join me as I visit one of the best nature reserves in the UK, RSPB Minsmere in Suffolk. This is Chris Packhams favourite reserve and it will be clear to see why on this wildlife packed autumn nature walk.

We get a lot of cloud and rain in the U.K., particularly in Scotland where I live....but sometimes you get stunning clear blue-sky days like Liam had at the start of the video and it reminds you what a beautiful, incredible and wildlife-diverse country the U.K. is. Cold, frosty, blue-sky winter days in Britain are utterly magical and make you feel glad to be alive, even if you don't see any notable wildlife.

Thank you. I have never been to Minsmere in proper winter so perhaps I will go back in a month or so and see what is about, I bet there is still a lot to see!
Lovely shot of the deer. The skylark is one of my favourite birds but I don't get to see enough of them. A fond memory of warmer days I think.
I agree, the Skylark is a wonderful bird & it's song is truly beautiful 😊
They're disappearing fast now as they rely on grassland habitats for foraging. There are a few on our riverside common and it's joyous hearing them trill as they ascend above you. Unfortunately, a kestrel is also regularly in the sky there often and must take one or two each summer.

Great film Liam; I used to visit Minsmere, Sizewell, Westleton Heath, Dunwich Heath and Dingle Marshes whenever I could. Your visit brought back nostalgic memories of those places where I could lose myself in the ethereal atmosphere engendered by them. Thank you so much Liam!
I am so pleased to have discovered your channel. I loved seeing the stone curlews. They look such interesting birds. I was surprised you hadn`t seen a wheatear before. They are very common here where I live in south wales. The males are very smart. Keep up the good work. The more people that can be encouraged to appreciate nature the better.

I suspect now that I have seen them both, I will see them more frequently throughout this winter. It always seems to be the way with wildlife- see none for ages and then loads all in a short space of time.

Good variety of sightings Liam. Great that you got to see the Shore Lark. Never seen one myself. As for Wheatear, I've seen those plenty of times, including dozens of them at Hunstanton many years ago one September all along the seawall between there and Hemsby. My understanding of their name is that it is a corruption of the old English nickname of "White arse", but you were far too polite and reserved to say that in the video! 😆😆😂

Haha, I think you are right on the shortening. I suspect I have seen Wheatear before but on a time when I didnt have my camera or binoculars with me to be certain. I hope you and the family are well!

I'm enjoying the videos, however, what would be very helpful is if you could add the names of the various species on screen in text as well - I'm not a native English speaker and don't have a huge knowledge of British wildlife, so it's often quite difficult for me to track down what animals exactly you're talking about.

Must be great seeing our largest mammals - red deer stags - in the wild. I've got herds of red and fallow deer in the Royal Parks a couple of miles away so I'm guaranteed deer sightings. Fine as they are, these are semi-wild though as they're used to humans - and their dogs and cars - so I take them for granted now.
Yes, these ones are properly wild although pretty regular in that area in the autumn. I haven't been to the royal parks to see deer yet but I will try to go one time soon. Cheers Clive

By the way, "Wheatear" is from the Anglo-Saxon "Whit erse", meaning "White (ahem) backside", Anglo-Saxon language being rather more blunt than modern polite English. 😄

Thing is, the Anglo-Saxon version simply describes what you see when a Wheatear flies away from you.

Yet another great video Liam. I went to Minsmear when I was a member ot the RSPB's YOC club (Young Onitholigy Club) that was nearly 60 years ago when I was 8 years old. My parents lived in the old entrance lodge to the RSPB which is now there shop. Keep the videos coming Liem

I’ve seen an egret near Abingdon recently! I was amazed and excited cause I’ve never seen one before, for someone like me I only get to see great animals through chance encounters. There is so much to see if we look out for it :)

Fantastic video mate. I learn something new every time I watch your channel. I really should visit Minsmere as it’s so close to where I live. Nice to see the Water Vole. These little creatures were a common sight in my childhood but I couldn’t tell you the last time I saw one. From what I heard the American Mink were released into the wild by animal rights activists creating havoc.

I was going to say exactly that about the water voles! We had two or three living on the River Mole here for a couple of years but they vanished as soon as a mink arrived. The voles are big and clumsy by rodent standards and are likely easy for the agile mink to predate. I've seen the mink once two years ago feasting on a duck - also easy prey - for a minute or two. If only I'd had a rifle handy!
@@Clive697 Mink are an absolute menace, extremely vicious and damaging.
Well.... Mink were recorded breeding in the wild in the UK way before animal rights activists released them, but it definitely did not make the situation any better. Thankfully, in this part of the country at least, Mink are almost gone now.

I live half hour from slimbridge but have never been.
Doesn’t seem as much fun unless you know what you are looking at. (Used to live in poole and visit Brownsea Island to see the birds resting on their journey south.)

Cheers Paul. Yes, 17 stone but I do weightlifting so most of it is muscle (for now at least!)
No, my wife doesnt have much interest in wildlife, she is a people person instead. I do often go with other people - this time for example, I was with another guy who films wildlife but he doesnt like being on camera. Thats why you might notice I sometimes switch between saying "I" and "We" by mistake.
I suspect a lot of the wildlife at this time of the year would be similar at Slimbridge to the species featured either in this video or another I did a while back at Welney Wetland. It might be worth taking a look, you could surprise yourself.

Yes I lift weights too 3 or 4 times aweek( leg press 200kg . My personal Trainer was impressed)but at 70 never going to become a bodybuilder.
Just finished my normal Sunday 2 hrs cleaning bird tables(2) ,feeders(7), water bowls etc.
Now filling them 2 or 3 times aday.(like my own outdoor aviary)
Give me animals any day against people🤣

Definitely do if you can. This year I have been twice, both times were brilliant and I think there is something to see all year round at the reserve.

I have a small request. With videos like these, when you mention some species, could you write out the name in a small box on the screen somewhere? Haha, I thought it was a bird hunched down but definitely not.
If you ever want to get some films shots barn owls busserds kestrel sparrow halk jays crows or ya smaller birds gold finch robins wren kingfisher gold crest and lots of finches be my guest.
