Where is the Quantum Moon actually hidden?

  • This is a video going out of bounds to show where the Outer Wilds devs hid the Sixth Location of the Quantum Moon.
    Consider supporting the channel: / xen42
    The Quantum Moon is supposed to be orbiting around the Eye of the Universe when it's at it's sixth location, however the Eye is located in a separate game scene so they had to hide it elsewhere.
    Spoiler: the sixth location is just a distant orbit around the sun, and the Quantum Moon is just invisible if you aren't on it. If you are on it, then it doesn't matter because you can't see the planets through the clouds so you're none the wiser.
    I used the FreeCam mod made by _nebula in this video, you can find the mod on outerwildsmods.com if you want to use it yourself!

      I saw a a video of someone putting the scout on the Pillar thing when it was in the 6 location at the correct angle.

    There was a bug early on, like in 1.0.2, where if you left the scout on the QM and then left, map mode would still show its indicator. By juggling the camera angles for a bit to push the QM to the 6th location, you'd get the indicator to point to an empty spot in space at around the distance you show in the video. Iirc, when doing this repeatedly, the QM would jump around to random points on its orbit, instead of following a predictable path.
    Also iirc, while in the 6th location you could pull out the signalscope and still hear music. Oddly enough, the distance indicator would continuously increase, as if the QM left its orbit and was just flying away in one direction. This was also patched out.

    This is so cool, I’ve previously discovered this by using a grey zone in the Quantum moon’s clipping to do this in vanilla, I really liked how the moon looked in all states at once, as if you could see what the quantum object truly existed as.(even if the eye is technically that but yeah close enough)
    On the dream world, I love to use the Lucid Dreaming glitch to discover stuff, and I once tried to get the the ending while technically in the dream world, and I actually got really close with multiple methods, but it seems to be very hard to do without mods. Anyway, I would love to see a dream world video.
    (And to note I’ve discovered that the dream world sits in front of the sun a bit away from where the stranger actually starts.)

    The problem with the quantum moon is it has clearly a mass, so constantly changing position should affect the orbits at some point. The moon also need a reason to remain in the system or it could jump everywhere in the univers, so it makes sense it's trapped inside the system. Even if everybody dies with the supernova and there is nobody to see the moon anymore it's still destroyed too, as it acts like it's at every place at once, but inside the system. So from the moon's perspective the supernova comes from everywhere at once.

    • @WackoMcGoose
      @WackoMcGoose 6 місяців тому +2

      @@Eklykti The latter, it's a tree structure. All the planets (Hourglass Twins counting as a single body both in-lore and in-engine, scriptedly moving around their midpoint which itself does an orbit), Interloper, White Hole Station, Deep Space Probe, the Sixth Location Quantum Moon, and _the debris of_ Sun Station all orbit the sun. Attlerock, Hollow's Lantern, Orbital Probe Cannon, the other five Quantum Moons, and Timber Hearth Photoshoot Probe all orbit their respective planets. Sun Station itself, the Orbital Probe itself, and the DLC location are _scripted_ movement unaffected by orbital mechanics whatsoever. In fact, the Orbital Probe and all the celestial bodies _noclip each other_ so they can't even physically collide with each other (Lore Explorer did a Deep Space Kraken to screw with the orbits via floating point shenanigans, causing the Interloper to phase through Giant's Deep and everything else). Sun Station is programmed to delete itself at a certain sun expansion radius (enough for it to be fully "submerged"), and the Interloper is programmed to delete itself when it likewise is fully submerged in the sun (not a specific time or location in its orbit), but other than that, the celestial bodies have _no interaction with each other at all,_ their orbital mechanics are determined exclusively by orbiting their "parent body" (so the Sun doesn't actually affect Attlerock at all, except indirectly by causing Timber Hearth's orbit, and likewise it can't yoink Hourglass Twins Quantum Moon since that moon _has no knowledge_ that the Hourglass Twins are themselves orbiting something).
      The player and their ship are affected by the gravity well(s) of _everything_ they're in range of, prioritizing the strongest scaled by distance (your ship being succed by the sun during Interloper's flyby, as well as the direction the landing cam points in Ash-vs-Ember, Hearth-vs-Attlerock, and Lantern-vs-Hollow), but they themselves cause no gravity.

    One of the reasons why the hidden quantum moon might orbit the sun and not dark bramble is because inside dark bramble, your velocity somewhat resets or slows down when you enter one of the pocket dimensions unlike quantum moon it has to maintain a certain velocity so that you don't immediately die when the Tower teleports you to a different planet.
    Funnily enough you can actually die from fall damage when you move around the tower while switching between planets, which is still a bug on the current version.

    The reason why the quantum moon orbits unlike the bramble is probably because it has gravity. It may have been more effort to code a new type of planet that has gravity but isn't affected by the sun than to just use the same code and give it enough velocity to orbit like the others.

    So, what it means when you get got on the sixth location by the sun, is that the sun activated the ash twin project and your memory stream is cut off. Being far away from the sun doesn't matter. The sun didn't expode while you were there because the sun exploding creates a very specific noise and light that, obviously, would give away that the sixth location is still in the solar system. So, while you're "there", they just don't play the animation, because you're canonically too far away to see, and the cloud layer prevents you leaving to check.

    • @xen-42

      Yeah definitely makes sense, I figured the distance was just to ensure the graphical effects of the supernova don't reach you but you're right that no matter what you'd still hear the supernova since it's a global sound not affected by distance, so they have to just not play the sequence

    Definitely wanna know how the dreamworld works. I figured it's as simple as using the sleep/wake screen to swap between "layers" and the dreamworld is just stacked on top of the normal Stranger kind of like Dark Bramble's pocket dimensions, which is how you can glitch the ship into it, but then how does it track the player's state in the real Stranger? Does the game just create a save state when you enter and yank you back to those coordinates (while reverting your HP and whether you have the spacesuit) when they become flooded with water or you're woken up by other means?

    • @xen-42
      @xen-42  Рік тому +3

      It's a little bit below the Stranger, I have a mod that makes the stranger always visible and you can see it in the sky when you enter the dreamworld because I forgot to vanish it then. It's kinda funny that the game actually relies on the Strangers cloak to make it not appear in the dreamworld, it's in about the same place as the ringed planet in the sky. I hadn't thought about the HP thing, because when you die in the dreamworld it starts triggering an actual death then exits out like halfway through to respawn you in the stranger. It might just heal you back to full, I should look into what it does there

      When you reach the eye you can wait for the sun to explode and see that it never reaches you when you're that far out, so it makes sense that when the QM is at the 6th location it wouldn't get you. You just loop as you normally do when you escape the supernova through other means. This also allows them to have the alternate ending where you pull the plug on the ATP and go on the QM, since you're safe from the supernova there you don't die at the end of the loop

  • @kaygirl10101
    @kaygirl10101 Рік тому +1

    Maybe not an actual explanation since I don't know the code, but could they have the QM orbit instead of being static because they needed gravity while there? There's not gravity in DB except at the angler skeleton.

    • @xen-42
      @xen-42  Рік тому +2

      You make a good point, actually when doing custom planet mods we ran into issues once where water on a planet would bug out and break if the planet was static, because there was code trying to take the orbital motion of the planet into account which was then breaking since it wasn't orbiting. Maybe they had hard-coded some other features of the Quantum Moon that would have also broken when static, and it was easier to just not fix them and have it orbit the sun instead.

  • @ozzi9816

    Quick question, sometimes you can see the quantum moon *at* the eye of the universe. Obviously you can’t enter it so is that just a separate entity only used for set dressing, or do they haul the quantum moon over for that?

    • @xen-42
      @xen-42  11 місяців тому +2

      At the eye they only have the outer cloud layer of the quantum moon, there's nothing actually inside it. It also doesn't simulate physics anymore and is just manually moved in a circle around the eye instead of simulating gravity iirc.

      @@xen-42 My best guess is that because the physics system in this game is so linked to real life physics if they altered the mass of the sun by making it hollow, it would screw up the orbit the player and other physics objects relative to the sun. Gravity on timber hearth is affected by The Attlerock enough that you jump noticeably higher when it's above you. The reason you get launched backwards in zero gravity when you fire the scout isn't because they coded it to apply negative force to the player, that happens because everything would break if the action of firing the probe didn't have equal and opposite reactions, everything would break. Jumping doesn't apply upward force, it applies force downward to the ground and jumping is the result. The zero g cave isn't coded to be zero g, it's zero g because it's literally the center of the planet and all the mass is around you...maybe they couldn't create a space large enough to hide a zero g environment as large as dark bramble?

      @@xen-42 The sun, in reality, isn't that big. When it is collapsing, just before the boom and then the explosive light show, you can spot a very small sphere - that's the "core" of the sun. What we see as the sun pre-explosion, while large, would end up not being good at hiding anything due to that large sphere collapsing just before the big boom. Anything hiding in that would then be revealed. The only way they could use the sun to hide anything was if they stuffed it into that tiny core sphere in the middle....and it's really not that big of a sphere to hide anything in. Another explanation could be that the sun is designed to auto-end your run if you're ever in it, so hiding things in it that the player gets teleported to was probably more trouble than it's worth to get protection from the auto-kill.
