This is what we mean with 'treat the visor as eyes'. You can see intent and desicions with the helmet tilted slightly down. Why do we know Kat is 'at the edge'? She's staring at the sky. How do we know Thom has accepted his death? Because he's staring down the covenant without a shiver nor flinch.
The moment between Kat and Thom has emotional weight because they're staring at each other, and her head rolls up to the warhead, and he grabs it and goes. Pain -> comisseration -> objective -> desicion -> Kat's sadness watching Thom fly off.
Gotta love helmet acting done well.

The old Halo adverts had so much love and care put into them, like they were trying to get you invested in a story and an experience rather than just using flashy visuals to sell you a product. The Halo 3 adverts that are more like documentaries with veterans of the Human Covenant war describing weapons and battles hit really hard. Also the physical models made for them are phenomenal.

I think i took Noble 6 flying up into the light as almost an emphasis on how supernatural Spartans are. He was depicted almost angelic which is fitting for a spartan being that they are called "humanities saviors". The head shot right before he tosses the bomb also made me feel like hes thinking to himself "the jobs done" but a part of me (watching this after playing the game) feels like that shot was for us as the player. What I mean by that is that I felt like I was him in that shot and if i were standing there in-front of my enemy knowing I was about to end them after everything they've done I would be thinking to myself "fuck you guys, heres a gift". Amazing video again, I love watching these and am so glad you feel this way about these Halo commercials. They were really next level.

I suspect the Dutch Angle shot was to align with the immediate previous shot of the ship.
The shot of ship was at a downward angle at the battle where the shape of the ship, and flight of the banshee, provided a sharpe dutch angle.
Keeping that angle for the next shot of Kat not only eases the viewer back into the battle scene but also kept the line of sight of the ship's angles and the kept both the ship and Kat's gun in full sight.
Lastly, the dutch angle also helps confirm the ship as Kat's target for the next shot of the other other spartan. Whom of which we never learn the name of (note his hud is missing in his brief FPS moment. We also never get to see his armors chest plate insignia. But Kat's and Jun's are on full display (but brief).
That little lack of detail is nice because, although we never played as that particular Noble-6, it still manages to put us into the boots of the game's Noble-6.

2:38 the original plan from Bungie was to let Tom just sit down at the edge and put the bomb besides him, because he knew he wasn't going to make it in time. But Microsoft though it was too dark, so they changed it to him running away. I prefer the first idea, but still, the first trailer is 10/10 for me.

If this is true I’m disappointed in Microsoft. The resignation would have been 10x more cinematically pleasing. As he mentioned in his breakdown, it doesn’t make sense for Noble 6 to flee up the ramp knowing the bomb was going off in 10 seconds

When it comes to the dutch angle you talked about when Kat was firing her pistol (11:40), I feel they chose that shot to make it seem more realistic. I know that spartans have an overlaid targeting system in their helmets. However, from filming paintball and airsoft i have learned that people do strange things when shooting firearms. That awkward tilt could be from Kat leaning her head slightly to look over the top of the Magnum and what we see in the shot is the perspective of the attached camera that she wears on her helmet which we see at (15:56). I may be completely wrong but just from personal experience from wearing a camera in the same spot on my paintball mask that's what i think they were trying to do.
Edit: Halo has a history of doing CCTV and other cameras in the moment from other commercials they have done. best one i can think of is Landfall that did that. more specifically the scene where the two odsts are riding in the warthog and we see that one is injured from a camera pointing back at the cab.

Fun Fact: That spartan who took the bomb is Thom-A293, he was the former Noble-6 before us, in his design docs he was supposedly a very selfless, humorous and texan cowboyish type character, while his design was left more muted on the commercials, his actual "canon" armor is very colorful on the concept art and it even got adapted as an armor kit for the Mark V(B) somewhat recently in Halo Infinite.

also on 16:55 about the arm. I think going in most people should have the idea of 'combat readiness' and being 'fit for combat' showing her badly mangled armed should also tell you that she's no longer fit to complete the mission and the mission being 'deliver the bomb' has been the focal point of the trailer from a story standpoint. I just like how even with no dialogue just purely where the camera draws your focus you can tell a story.

The thing that always gets me with this trailer is the way Thom (The Noble Six in this trailer and whose position we fill in-game) drops his arm holding the bomb in the end and stares blankly ahead at the sheer size of the Covenant force in this one ship alone. You don't see his face but you can tell that he knows he won't get out alive, maybe its just human reaction to run from the bomb, but I love to think that he knew there was no chance of getting out, but that his death would be worth something in this battle and hopefully in the war. That final zoom in to his visor just emphasizing his courage and bravery in the face of certain death. Then that zoom out showing the scope of what his sacrifice had achieved followed by how small it really was in the scale of an all out planetary war, it explains exactly what Spartan 3's are made to do without a single word and what our role is going to be: to trade lives for time

The last time I felt the actual weight of Halo with the new releases and how great they were was when I first saw this trailer on TV. Its beyond good. Reach was a complete new story and this trailer felt like something id never seen before. It made reach/halo seem so much bigger yet so close to home.
I know many ppl think the old games are still better but in my eyes reach will go down alongside Halo CE-3. This kind of quality is what matters; its proof the ppl working on this were still trying to make it the best

  • @Valagrimm

I assume this trailer was directed and edited etc. before Thom and Rosenda were cut from the game, so there would be the "did he make it out" and you might see Thom in reach.

  • @Blackbaldrik

It is truly remarkable the amount of meaning and emotion you can express with just a closeup of a visor.
It sucks that so few people recognize this. We don't _need_ to see a face, humans communicate with and find meaning in, so much more than just facial expressions.
I try to imagine what Deliver Hope would be like if Kat and/or Thom didn't have a helmet on, and I can only really conclude that it wouldn't be as good. Meaning would be lost, not gained.

It would really be cool for you to watch some of the later seasons of red versus blue, so seasons 6 to 13, because the production quality then gets really good

I really appreciate the use of a kind of film noir cucoloris shot at the end there with the protagonist right before he tosses the bomb. The lighting under the chin is another way of giving it that sense of immenint doom that the character is going through . Showing emotion with helmets is a skill of its own and bungie definitely had it during this time. I definitely think modern filmmaking can benefit with learning how to display emotion without showing the actors face more because it can really take scenes like this to the next level.

This is such an amazing trailer.
For that weird dutch-angle shot, I'm pretty sure they did it that way so you would SEE her arm. That's the arm she loses, so you get to see the cause of her loss (the Covenant ship) and then the thing she loses.

So that section with the pistol that was at an odd angle i believe was specifically to show the banshee that shoots her. As the add continues it makes more and more appearances until it does. The focus isnt supposed to be the gun. Its the banshee.

I don't think he was featured in any of the novels "Quote me here if i am wrong" as if he was then i likely didnt know which book it was if that was the case.

Love this break-down of the trailer. I rarely feel attached to trailers, however when I watched this the first time on my XBox 360 I felt like crying and somehow did. Similar to the "Halo 3 - Believe" Trailer. The Gears of War Trailers hit in the same emotional direction. Playing with the emotions and hyping up to progress with the story and see the outcome. I miss such trailers nowadays.

Halo ce the videogame has a great story. Watched a interview with Martin O' Donnell the audio director of the game, on one of the levels he had to fight to not have the audio start straight away. He explained how the absence of sound in the right circumstances can be incredibly impactful.

im so glad you got around to covering this as well. every since playing the multiplayer beta as a kid i could never let go or forget how monumental and beautiful this trailer is and always will be. this is without a doubt one of my favorite trailers of all time and for all the great reasons you got to notice and call out. but this really does matter and hit home more after getting to play the game. SPOILER FOR THE LAST MISSION OF REACH!
    .
    .
    .
in the mission description for your last stand after Survive, it says "Spartan's never die." alluding to the known adage "Spartan's don't die, they just go MIA." which has always kind of hurt in a small way but continue the legend of the Spartans. I feel like even thought the last 6 (the one in this trailer) never got to greet death with their own eyes, in some way Our 6 gets to make that right in their final moments in memoriam to them in some way.
Halo Reach is and has always been such a solid story and narrative, even more so thanks to it working in tandem with the gameplay, so we all really do hope you get to play it some time (maybe on the MCC (Master Chief Collection)) and really get to appreciate all that it offers. (and maybe look up the parting message Bungie left for player of the OG Reach version and appreciate that in the Halo ring approach cutscene as well as all the easter eggs they left for the players that 343 ended up taking out(particularly Halsey's lab that Cortana is seen in, its full of nods and love))

For the Dutch angle that you described. The reason why it's so offset is because of the head cam she's wearing, it's on the right side of the helmet and you can see it in some prototype helmets. Or another reason completely is that the film director wanted you to feel offset for it. Either way. Every time I see (I've been a long-term halo fan since halo 2) it still brings me to tears knowing that I have a deeper connection with this group.

This is one of the best cinematic pieces that have come out of game media in general, I think. It's beautiful. And it's clever, in the sense that for an outside audience (so, people who don't know Halo) it has enough going for it to get them feeling something and get them invested; but it has a 2nd layer for people who DO know what this is all about. And the cinematic doesn't take anything away nor compromise for either audience, I think.

  • @patriot459
    @patriot459 2 місяці тому

Yes exactly man… master cheeks in the show thinks he needs to have helmet and dam near all of his armor off to show emotion and intent but as you pointed out it’s just you can feel these moments and how each character is feeling. You can feel mats determination as you see her running and shooting and doing whatever it takes to get the mission done which then when that rocket blows her up you can tell she feels defeated. Then six comes up to her and doesn’t help her up or do anything but looks down at her for a second and with no hesitation takes that bomb and gets to work… like he knows what she was feeling and he’s like I got this and stares down that entire ships army with not an ounce of fear…

  • @michaelsauget705

This cinematic is the first time you really see how the Banshee acts in a "lore scene" and how its described in the books. They're scary ground attack fighters, in the games for balance they're slow and predictable. But here they act like a nimble ground attack/dog fighter. I always imagine them as an A10 that has the manoeuvrability of a jet fighter.
It's a shame we've never seen a Wraith in media properly. The line in First Strike, in Fred's POV when he describes why the Wraith tank is called the Wraith; "You get one look and then it makes you one". In game they're easy to dodge and destroy, but we never see a marine just evaporate from plasma.
