“Don’t use an open bolt weapon to initiate an ambush”.
In a triangle shaped platoon position in thick bush in Vietnam in 1969, I initiated a contact against a group of NVA with a single Claymore, I followed up with the M60 machine gun. The M60 fired 5 rounds and stopped (due, I think to a stretched link). Distance to the NVA guy walking point was 10 metres. It’s then you realise why in training we were taught to clear a weapon stoppage over and over and over again, until I used to think, “ Do these f…king NCOs think we are retarded?”
When your weapon that’s going to keep you alive, stops, it’s not a good feeling. While clearing the stoppage I felt like everything was in slow motion. Long time ago, but some things are never forgotten.
Thanks for your comments brother. Spot on.... John Basilone on Guadalcanal got a machine gun back up and in the fight by using parts from other downed guns.....AT NIGHT, and under attack. Its important stuff to know those weapon systems front and back and in the dark for sure.

You should go to 1 shepard
1. Also give ambush time "for natural sounds around you to return to normal". Don't spook the prey with "it's quiet, too quiet." Scouts aren't random picks, they are determined eyes, nose and ears of alarm.
2. Beware of giving off scents, even aftershave can spook a scout and reroute a column out of your ambush.
3. Having rear flank spotters with a small sniper/marksmen detachment (with preferably if available high ground) can more easily pick off high value targets at the beginning of an ambush and take out more high value targets if they rout and full retreat. Having them on rear guard gives you info on "get ready". But like he said having "eyes" on flank will help in avoiding the "hook" sweep and net manuvears designed to pincer and clear ambushes.
4. Wired claymores aren't as effective in day (at least mud up the wire or use camo wire) as in night. Using an rfid detonater is more reliable (unless they are using signal jammers) , also look at the lay out and set layered traps, if there is a natural "cover" for enemy forces leave it as "bait" and conceal a claymore to flank the hard point leaving their troops vulnerable and disoriented continuously. "Leaving an out" is a very effective strategy in an ambush, people under stress usually fight or flight, and flight is usually path of "perceived" least resistance. Land mines/claymores/(traps basically) on a path of least resistance can be devastating.
5. Always make sure your team is on the same page about trap location, there is nothing more stupid than letting your own team wander into traps laid for the enemy.
6. Variety is the spice of victory, patterns draw "counters". Beware of becoming predictable.

Cory the only option you have is to attack the enemy. if you are in an ambush, EVERYTHING that looks like it might be cover, is most likely going to have some sort of surprise waiting for you. claymore mines or other explosives etc. further if the people setting them up actually know what they are doing you may have several surprises daisy chained together. so attacking the shooters becomes your only hope of survival.
if in a vehicle then you can try to drive out of the kill zone but a smart leader will take out the lead and rear vehicles first, thus preventing egress from the kill zone.

We were always taught in Vietnam that its best to place the Claymores in front of a tree, rock, or other hard surface, (sandbags), etc. so that you didn't get any back blast.
It directs more energy also.

I'm a Swiss Army Lieutenant and sadly we don't get an optic for everybody. That's really sad because our SG550's are really accurate and if you mount a scope on it you can easily hit targets 600m away with the standard issued rifle.. sadly we only train on 300m with iron sights. Well at least every (even the computer specialists or the tank mechanics) soldier is trained to hit targets up to 300m with ease.. I just like to think how effective our soldiers would be if we had scopes.
Our Marines definitely benefited from every Marines weapon being outfitted with an ACOG.

Gurfi28 im from the swiss to. The sg550 is an awsome weapon. Realible, accutate easy to operate and even when a little heavy and outdated they are awsome but as he said its sad that we just train schooting 300 meters and dont have optics. I mean just with an ACOG optic you coud make it about 2-3 times more effective. Great video
That's the whole point of training with irons. Look if your country goes to war I guarantee you see alot of optics suddenly. Same thing happened after 911 everyone had irons and then suddenly aim points and acogs for every ground pounder

My 2 Great Uncle's were in the Canadian. Black Watch in WW2. My Uncle Walter was ambushed by sniper, and shot down on the stairs of a church in Belgium. I did know the other uncle tho. Uncle Arty and has platoon were ambushed some where towards the end of the war, i think in Germany, he said they came out of cover and were sitting ducks and the krauts blasted them with Mg-42 fire, and he had his leg blown off by a mortar round. He said that they took heavy casualties, i was a child so he didn't get to to gory, but also didn't hold back on tell his fantastic war stories either. Lucky me. God bless and Keep them!
Great video. Now for us civilians who will never have a claymore, I would really like to see videos on gravity / counterweight traps. Or what traps can you construct after your claymore is gone, how would you deploy them, Evasion & diversion tricks, and all those other RECONDO type jungle combat secrets. Some of us don't have crew served weapons! Making do with less gear could be great video topics. Even military people can run out of gear and and be forced to improvise. That would be so interesting.
Hawaii Volcano Squad I agree, It would be good to have knowledge like that in a Red Dawn type situation. If you don't have enough supplies and gear, you need to know how to make the best of what you do have and apply it practically to fight the enemy.

The principals can still be applied. All the ambush formations are still effective you would just have to initiate an ambush with a closed bolt weapon. You probably wont achieve the mass confusion that's created by an explosive device but as long as your ambush is quick to key off of the initiator of the ambush the enemy would still experience shock and confusion. For civilians you could supplement crew serves/automatic rifleman with lets says civilian legal semi-automatic AR/AK's with 100/75/50 round drums so those guys could fire rapidly at the kill zone. Of course I would hope that your not planning on ambushing anyone anytime soon lol. Such things should be kept in your mental tool box until we have a major ISIS outbreak here in the states. ;)
Act like a native principal in Vietnam would mean building Viet Cong style booby traps, funneling the enemy into them. In the Iran Iraq war, Saddam Hussein electrified the swamps when Iranian soldiers were moving through, electrocuting large groups of enemy soldiers.

+wingxxzero Our battle to preserve our 2nd Amendment right currently belongs at the ballot box and in the court rooms. In regards to Isis, they have already attempted at least one Isis inspired mass murder attempt here in in Garland Texas (which is not too far from me). Nothing is stopping them from carrying out Beslan school hostage crisis style attacks or 2008 Mumbai style attacks. The only thing that is going to stop them from being able to commit mass murder is responsible armed citizens who are concealed carrying who can get the drop on these guys the second they walk in brandishing their weapons.

My dad was in the army in Nam. His guard unit had guys who saw lots of combat in Vietnam. They used to talk about platoons getting cut to pieces with "L" shaped ambushes. Interesting to hear what that actually means.
The L is no joke. Covers all angles, including corners for buildings.
I like the thumbnail, sitting crisscross next to a Browning like a kindergarten teacher showing the kids a show and tell. It's like classroom learning for combat, grab a pen and pad and take notes kids. Entertaining, engaging, and informational, this is how teaching is done. Cheers.

He's talking about engagements that are beyond 100m. They definitely take whatever the enemy was planning or thinking about and make them only think about how do I not get shot
Nicolas Villamil Just one thing to add to this, in the FDF we typically don't have a lot of crew served at least in LRRP type mission profiles, and we are typically in a situation where the enemy numbers are hugely overwhelming. There you use your belt feds more to keep your enemy from being able to move, they may or not get some hits in but he vast majority of casualties are from rifle fire. The belt feds are used also to try to keep the enemy from moving, or organizing, until you disengage and pull out. The purpose is to cause chaos, demoralize and slow down enemy movement, and if possible destroy equipment over killing enemy, enemy casualties are at the lowest end of the priority list.

Interesting compliment to this video would be a counter ambush technique video. If your unit walks into various ambush types show what the most effective way would be to get out or counter.

This guy is very knowledgeable. I would actually feel safe if I was in combat and I had this guy instructing me.
One thing I believe that needs to be noted. If using MG's in a L shaped ambush, the guns need to staked in with clear left and right of arcs,. Primarily, alternative and secondary tasks. Either using "fixed lines" or "fixed limits"

First and foremost thank you for your service. Retired in 2012 from the service. I was familiarized with the M16, M60, M240 grenade launcher, LAW, and hand grenade. Yes, I'm that old. Do not recall deploying a claymore mine. I did do it during some field training with the MPs during my time stationed at Ft Clayton Panama. Good times. ;) lol!
In the Australian Army we used our belt fed weapons for site occupation security with hootchy cord tide in slip knot to non master hand. This was pulled from depth which was the signal to turn belt fed weapons to interlocking arcs of fire, gun stakes set by a rifleman who also camouflaged gunners, especially of a day time. Made for a quick, quiet well set up killing zone. Sometimes claymores were also placed on interlocking arcs also with rifles firing head on often into smoke and trip flares allowing rifles fired rapidly on initiation then well aimed shots into the lit silhouettes, then maybe a re initiation or bug out. Great video as always, providing many options and formations regards ambushing.

M249 gunner in US Army infantry, badass weapon system, mine ran pretty damn well, but I took good care of Jenna and kept her lubed up. She choked on mags every damn time, but running belts I can't say I remember her going down if I did my part.
Also trained on the 240B alot, another excellent system IMO. Nothing beat being attached to cav and using the M2 though in the turret, nothing for a leg comes close to that IMO.
I was a SAW gunner too. Right about the M16 magazine feed-it jammed on me every fucking time-learned real fast to stick with belts. Good thing the M240Bs came into service-our M60s were worn out pieces of shit.
@@larryh502 hell yea, our pigs were badass, we would jam sticks in with the links etc and they just chewed em up and kept rollin. It gave you amazing confidence to know your weapon system was reliable as hell.

Good information, it makes a huge difference when the teacher knows from real world experience. I would like to learn some techniques on applying this into urban situations.

Ok here is what you do in an urban area;...blast 2Pac near a basketball court, next to a liquor store, and use Laquesha as bait when she is booty popping......then swap out your barrels when they over heat.

I'm an airsofter (and before everyone starts rolling their eyes, I have a lot of respect for the people that do this for real), and I've never really been able to get a sense for non-CQB (eg. forest) infantry combat. My current plan is to watch all of your videos on the subject in order to gain a better understanding.

I'll never forget, Battle of Vanceboro, we got annihilated. We never expected seeing all the lasers the enemy deployed, much less the ex-house cats the enemy unleashed which trailed the lasers with such precision fury. Once the lasers found our faces, the cats pounced on us and we were helpless. Now I *never* leave my compound without a pouch of at least mid-grade kitty catnip as a deterrent.

I guess I'm old, but we didn't all have optics, I opted out personally as did others. In day time, any time for that matter I found it got in my way when firing looking down the barrel or otherwise. Night fire with the nvgs was something else. It took a lot of discipline to learn to fire my weapon from the shoulder when using night vision. Man, that white dot puts you on point!
I remember when we were deployed to the island of Tinian. We were operating as the OPFOR for the Marines who were going to make an amphibious landing. We were patrolling and we observed the SEALS making a beach insertion. We set up a hasty ambush and wiped them all out on the beach. They were so pissed off, it was hilarious.
Seals being ambushed 🤨 the minute I read that I knew something was bullshit with this paragraph. You would never even notice a group of seals making a beach insertion. They wouldn't make an insertion in the middle of the day. So something in this paragraph or the whole thing is a lie.

@@xduwutees9575 LOL I can tell you are too wrapped up in Hollywood's presentation of SEALS. They are just regular soldiers, they are not supermen. If you have ever been in the woods away from civilization and light pollution, your eyes adapt and you can see well. It was pure LUCK on our part that we noticed them making their beach insertion but we did and we waxed them. The Army SF A team that was operating on the island, I heard them making their insertion....I heard their chutes open but we NEVER saw them once. After the OP was over they talked about almost bumping into us on patrol several times, they gave us really high marks on our patrolling techniques but they always saw us first, would freeze and wait for us to move off before continuing their mission.

@@xduwutees9575 Were you there? SEALS are just highly trained men, not super men. Call it luck or whatever you want but we just happened to be in the right place at the right time and got them all on the beach. The SF team that was inserted through a HALO jump in the middle of the night, we NEVER saw them once. We would come across their camp sites but never saw them. After the mission was over and we got to talk to them they said there were many times we passed by them close enough where they could reach out and grab our feet. They snuck a guy into our perimeter and he was hiding out under the ruins of a building that had been the Japanese command headquarters during the day. At night he would come out and go through the chow line, talk to the cooks and JR officers and shoot the breeze like he was assigned to the unit. They would tell him everything and he would radio it back to his command. If you have ever been away from civilization where there is no light pollution you would know how possible and funny that story is.
I didn't really need this knowledge, but i'll find a place to store it.
I love the use of Army Men. You should do a more urban setting, taking into consideration the nature of buildings vs. bushes. Also, if you haven't already, a video on how to survive being ambushed would rock. Thanks for all you do and have done.

Chose a ambush site which has obvious places for the enemy to take cover, naturally herding them there.
Preparing these places with suitable remote triggered mines.
Beehives, hornets nests and anthills as chokepoints.

What's the effective range of a claymore, and how far behind it is a safe distance to wait?

You want to me a minimum of 16 meters behind the claymore. It will dispense metal fragments at a 60 degree arc to approximately 50 meters. Those fragments are somewhat effective out to 100 meters and can reach up to 250 meters. Its best to have your enemy within 50 meters of the mine when its touched off, that is the area in which it is most effective.
