Great video. I remember the longer we stayed in the field my sense of smell would get so turned up. I once was talking to another platoon leader and realizing there was something different about him; I realize after being in the woods for nine days straight, in 90+ degree heat without showers, I could smell he had just returned from the barracks and that he had snuck a shower. He smelled clean from feet away. Also like you said once on patrol my platoon located an OPFOR position because they were smoking.

I'm only an airsofter but I've learned some useful tips from these types of videos. If I'm not using my ghillie suit in game, I always carry a few rubber bands with me, they can be put on your arms and you can stuff vegitation into them, helping break up the shape of the shoulders. That and some vegitation on your head and rifle is a great makeshift ghillie. I'm in the process of making a ghillie net I can roll up and keep in a pouch, then it can be unrolled and I can go prone underneath it, to help mask my position.
    Great content, Bren

Awesome pros and (the many) cons. The one thing I learned young was that failure is not an option; but, it is a damned fine teacher. Doing something wrong (and living through it and not getting anyone else dispatched) teaches you at least two things. One, what not to do. Two, what to do right. And, in my case, three, having enough gained training to train someone else. Well done my friend! Old dogs can learn new tricks! Thank you.

  • @robertthetexan8537

2 things, "A walking Blackhawk catalog". Besides being funny as hell is also absolutely true. I have seen some guys that think if they have some free PALS webbing, they feel the need to attach a pouch. If you attach a pouch, you're going to put shit in it. Keep your kit slim and trim without compromising ammo loadout and other critical items. The ass n balls comment is absolutely spot on. I think it was Ivory soap we used back in the day that had no scent/odor to it. If you use baby wipes to 3 spot yourself, use unscented baby wipes. Another great video. Keep em coming. This is good training and good tactical intel.

That was almost exactly the stuff we learned at training.
    Some adds:
People chose the first magazine they will use, covered it with foam and camo fabric.
this way its not making noise if the magazine hit stuff like rocks or while you climb things and the weapon dangle around and hit things.

Great video. If your uniform has pockets on the arms and legs, you can stuff natural materials like twigs or grass there. If you put long grass in the upper pockets on your arms, they can partially cover your head. Also it's good to jump up and down couple of times before you go out, so you can hear and eliminate any metal-on-metal rattle of your gear.

I believe their is also a 3rd option for camouflaging the face. A face viel. Now, a lot of units don’t allow it, but during some experimental operations we found that the face viel made of a mesh cloth painted in any pattern does well and doesn’t necessarily cut off your vision as much as you think and it was very effective when I’ve used it.

I have to say, this is my favorite method for hunting. I can't stand faceshields or masks that cut off my breathing, but a veil is very unobtrusive and works well. You can also sew them onto any standard baseball cap easily. I'm sure there are a lot of reasons why they're not used in the field, but for hunting, they're really comfy and effective.

Thanks for this series. Once we start going back to drill I will probably send these out to my new platoon just to prepare them to some basic concepts and hopefully reduce training time. Apparently camouflage and some basic patrol concepts are not taught as basic training anymore, even to combat engineers (heck they don't teach iron sights anymore and shoot with an M68). Some of us old guys that were in before 9/11 have a leg up when preparing for near-peer conflicts.

@@Brent0331 we did a joint training with the national guard, active duty, Marines, SF, all sorts of stuff. The BN we were with told us we had to walk around in full kit all the time because we could have "enemy air assault" at anytime. They also made us sleep in GP mediums on the edge of a field instead of in our fighting positions like we planned.
I was working as a range safety a few years ago and some kid was having a terrible time zeroing. I was trying to coach him and after about 20 rounds he told me he had never fired with iron sights before and had nonidea how to do it. I didn't know what to say.

A couple of tips: try to keep your camo pattern as consistent as possible, this includes your face, the more you camo matches over your entire body the harder it is to see you. The brim of your boonie hat and helmet create a shadow that is easily distinguishable from the rest of you, your boonie hat brim should be trimmed back as far as possible to less'n that shadow. The helmet should have a camo cover that over-laps the edges and should be cut in an irregular pattern (all the way around)and not straight across the brim, back and sides.
Additional tip: the cotton poly blend fabric can be waterproofed for a extended period of time by rubbing a non-scented candle into the fabric and melting with a hairdryer or worst case a camp fire. The fabric does become slightly stiffer and may increase heat retention,to avoid this just apply to the neck, upper back and shoulder area as well as your boonie hat and helmet cover.

You're not kidding about the effectiveness of a camouflaged weapon. I remember hunting with my father one time when he had just covered his rifle in camo tape. At the end of the day, he had left his spot to come find me so we could go back to the lodge. I saw him from a long way off, but didn't see his rifle. The whole time, I watched him and wondered what he had done with his rifle. He was almost within speaking distance and I almost asked him "Where's your rifle?" when I finally saw that he was carrying it like usual. I couldn't see the rifle for the life of me with that camo pattern on it!
