Rig Rundown - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

Americana troubadour, Jason Isbell met with Premier Guitar’s Perry Bean at the Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to go deep about his guitars, Dumble-modified amps, and why his wife is the best at picking out gifts.
This 1961 Gibson ES-335 is the first really old and really awesome guitar that Isbell obtained and is mostly original with a few key upgrades. Isbell had famed Nashville luthier Joe Glaser give the guitar a refret and install a TonePros tailpiece along with new tuners because after years of use the originals started to look like “a dead man’s toe.”
A 2014 Gibson Collector’s Choice Les Paul goldtop (#12) is patterned after a ’57-scratches and all. After loading up the guitar with a pair of OX4 PAF-style pickups, Isbell considers this the best “new” Les Paul he’s played.
Isbell tweaked this 2014 Fender Custom Shop ’60 Tele Custom (which was built by Master Builder Paul Waller) by adding a black pickguard and a Twisted Tele pickup in the neck position.

I wouldn't say he's underrated anymore...I mean he's won 4 Grammys. I opened up for him in 2009, I think he'd been away from the Truckers about two years and I knew he'd written "Outfit" and few other songs for them, but even ten years ago I knew he was gonna do big things...we played to about 100 people that night now he's out winning Grammys and playing with John Prine, Vince Gill, Keith Urban etc etc

I know people know how great Jason is as a songwriter but this guy is an awesome guitar player too. And the biggest compliment to his credit is how he is so tasteful in how he compliments his songs with his gear. Not too much. Just perfect.
And I love his Klon explanation. Even more impressed with him after watching this. And I was damn impressed to before.

This is a hell of a Rig Rundown. Never heard of the guy, but it was a great sound and I'm checking him out. Also LOVE how much detail he went into his gear. It's always great to hear artists talk about their gear with love rather than just listing off what they have.

My brother and I were lucky enough to see Jason at a benefit show at Fitzgerald's in Chicago. It was a an acoustic performance by himself in a relatively small room; he played a Martin not seen in the video here, but for the last few songs and the encore he brought out his No.1 D-18 that he talks about first. As a lifelong guitar player of 43 years, I can tell other fellow guitar players, you have never heard such a deep, rich acoustic guitar sound in your life. Doesn't hurt that Jason is an amazing player, singer, & performer...but the sound of that Martin that night? absolutely unreal, what an amazing show!

The first time I saw Jason Isbell was in '03/'04?, in New Orleans at One Eyed Jacks. Matter of fact, I thought I was going to see lead singer of the Truckers (Patterson), but was mistaken. The flyer read so and so of the Drive by Truckers, and I had just gotten the Decoration Day album. I really dug that album, so I was in. There wasn't many in attendance, and Jason was seated on stage by himself wearing a green beanie. It was a low key thing with people talking at the bar and staying away from stage center. It was apparent that he could sing and play but the performance lacked continuity. He played originals and covers but the crowd was meehhhh. On the outro of one number, Jason tapped in some sort of phase shift pedal and let it rip. He was turning the knobs and changing the Hz and intensity. I looked down the bar and saw these two girls making just the most awful grimace. It was loud and then suddenly feedback. He killed it and then there was silence. Somebody said, " I hope he doesn't play that again!" Lol, I'm glad I got to witness it. He is one of my favorite artists and always puts on a good show. He truly has perfected his craft.

For anyone who happens to be curious. I spoke to Tom Murphy recently and asked him about the "initials" thing. He said he did indeed sneak his initials in, but he did it because he had encountered fakes in the international market, so he started initialing them and adding other unique markings so he could prove the relic work was actually done by him.

I'm not a pro musician but no way I'dtake a guitar I really cared about on the road, unless I could sleep with it! Tone in at studio is less than any fears about live.

Great interview!Facts about Duesenberg guitars are wrong though...the guitars have a ROCKING bridge (not a floating bridge) so there are zero intonation problems (since the bridge does not float/move) and all Duesenberg guitars have the same scale length (25,5") the black one does not have a longer scale but a bigger body.

Immediately went to look up that capo company... and boy are those things expensive haha. They look really nice though.
