For sure he definitely knows a lot of little things that most people don’t know like if you change the pick guard on one guitar it will loose top end or if you wanna loose top end or bottom end do this or that just so much great information and if he made a channel nows the time to do it because Beato will promote his channel and he will get a big jump on subscribers quickly from the start! Even if he doesn’t put the effort in to make really high quality content, editing perfectly and everything like Beato does it would still be a great idea to atleast start the channel and get subscribers coming from Beato’s channel and he can just post one video per week and just using a phone Mount to take the video of him working on customers guitars with some good lighting. Really wouldn’t take much time just hit record when he’s working on something and when he gets a rare guitar take a video of it and how to tell if it’s real, if he’s doing something weird like customer is complaining of a noise that’s a great video, making a guitar stay in tune better is great, installing new pick ups another great video specially if he went into detail about wiring and how adding a capacitor, resistor or different ohm pots to get more or less of something in your tone would be a great video, another great video well it could be a few different videos about what parts he like to use better and why like what tuners he likes, what input jacks he likes, what brand pots he likes, what bridges he likes and a really cool video would be about pick ups to use for what style of music vs what wood is in the guitar this would be something that he would have some very good options on and would be super useful for people to make the best decision when buying new pick ups I mean let’s face it if you walk into guitar center the person selling you a pick up will not know that this pick up will sound a bit muddy with the wood that’s in ur guitar or whatever all they will say and all most people online will say is the pick up sounds way better then the old pick up but for people that have a really sensitive ear like myself who can hear things that most can’t having this kinda information will really help out and sure there are many videos online but he has a certain level of notoriety so he for sure could do well.

My wife bought me a Strat copy from a mall in Kansas city. Mustang was the name on the headstock. Heaviest guitar I ever owned. Changed everything on it. Bought several others over the years but, that cheap 80 dollar guitar was the only one I ever played on stage. Had a stroke a few years back and am learning to play on that same guitar again. Bought your course yesterday Rick. Thanks to both of you for what you do.

My second guitar is a '52 Silvertone Archtop from Sears and Roebuck. Found it in Charleston, SC learning to play blues from Scott Perry. I bought it for $150 and have owned it since 1998. It is terrible to look at but plays like butter. Had neck reset and frets replaces a few years ago. I'll never give it up!!

I have 14 guitars and none of them do the same thing tonally. The one I play the most is a modded 2013 Gibson 60's Tribute Gold Top Les Paul. I put an ABR-1 bridge with a featherweight tailpiece on it. I also added a pickguard because I wore a hole in the cheapo satin finish within a year. Everything else is stock other than I had to shield all the cavities because of static noise problems. My original 1963 white and gold SG Custom is the next in the pecking order. It was my most played until I got the Les Paul. It is all stock other than I had it refretted back in the 90's because I had completely worn the frets out. That guitar is amazing. It has the original PAF pickups. I had to replace some of the machine heads because they were very worn and not stable. I did buy a very expensive set of vintage 1963 Kluson tuners for it and replace them one at a time as needed. That guitar is solid. I moved from Phoenix to Nashville and didn't even have to adjust the truss rod or bridge. What a monster.

Tele's are the working man's guitar. Sold my white MIM Tele to my son in law a few years ago who really liked it in one of my "I gotta thin the herd" moments. Regretted it in no time. Started looking and about 8 months later bought a US Tele in Silver finish for twice what I paid for the MIM (reminds me of the great Don Rich) and it looks fantastic but plays nowhere near that old MIM. I've had it checked out, set up, everything. I never learn.

I noticed recently, that I've been keeping old guitars in the corners for ages. So I started experimenting with them, taking them apart, and learning the insides. Recently I redid the whole wiring of my 2011 Gibson Les Paul. I maybe overdid it by adding a 6-way mic switch and 4 push-pull pots. The design took me 4 weeks to get done and the build took a whole day and a few fixes on later days.
I used the original mics, opened the wiring so that I could get coil taps, series wiring, etc. But now that one guitar has so many different sounds in it I totally threw away the thought of needing another guitar. And it looks all stock from the outside which is excellent.

Rick, I have the same affliction. I Love guitars, I'm a singer by trade, but truly love them, they are kinetic art. I own 14 right now and all different. Acoustics , 6 & 12 strings, Fender, Gibson , Epiphone, Sigma, Squire, Ibanez, Jackson many under $200. I find broken unwanted guitars and repair them. I do admire Dave so much. Excellent player and very knowledgeable like your self. I do play a little myself so I do enjoyed them immensely. Just playing a simple Beatle song and singing along is enough for me.

I’m just a basic beginner guitar player, and I’ve got an Affinity Squire Strat, 20th Anniversary in black and white, a 2018 Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top Pro in blue burst, and a PRS SE, Custom 22 in tobacco flame, all great starter guitars and all set up by a local luthier. They all have their own unique sounds but the PRS is just an amazing guitar for the money. The Epiphone is actually really well made too and also sounds really good. I don’t think you have to pay a fortune these days to get decent instruments, these guitars are all great instruments for what you pay. I have a couple of modelling amps and some pedals and you can get some great sounds for not a lot of money.

@@patricknicolucci5073 I actually sat with the luthier to learn what he did to set up the guitars and adjust the tonality and action etc. It was really interesting to watch. I asked him a lot of questions and he had some surprising things to say. He mentioned that some musicians he does work for actually don’t use their most expensive guitars for giging. He said a lot of them use Squire bodies and put Fender Player necks on them because the squire bodies are lighter and less work to carry around and use on stage. He just changes the pick ups and pots etc. He said my Epiphone was actually nicer than a lot of Gibsons he’s set up and played, and was pretty surprised at the quality of the instrument, even the pick ups sound great. He actually asked me if I wanted to sell it to him. He was also full of praise for the PRS SE, he said “ why would you need a $3k guitar when this thing plays so well?” Sounds like you’ve got a great collection of instruments.

Loved this pair of videos. Since you asked here’s the list of guitars I still have in order of acquisition
1980 Les Paul Firebrand (my baby…bought it in high school…all stock except for frets 14 and 15 which were damaged and repaired 3 years ago)
2010 Taylor GA4-12 (had some serious neck bend and was repaired under warranty and plays better now than ever [so loud])
2011 Martin GPCPA1 (my favorite guitar to play, my go to for open mic nights plugged in)
2015 D35 50th anniversary (East Indian, not Brazilian…a true acoustic cannon I bought used, accidentally)
2018 Waterloo wl12-mh (an amazing punchy all-hog for it’s small size)
2018 Epiphone ES335-pro (an amazingly versatile guitar with the coil splitters…can make all kinds 60s and 70s sounds…and my most inexpensive)
2011 Fender Roadhouse Deluxe Stratocaster (it does everything a strat is supposed to do, I don’t even waste my time with the s1 switch)
2019 Jimmy Page DragonTelecaster [mx] (oh come on it’s fun if weird…it’s just a tele, but it is the easiest playing electric I have)
2020 Danelectro 59x12 (jangle squared…so different than everything else. Can do pretty good mid 60s stuff like the byrds and Beatles sounds)
2021 Epiphone SG special (just for the p90s…it’s nice guitar for the price…and it’s Pelham Blue lol)
2021 Danelectro longhorn 4 string bass (finally took a swipe at playing the bass for songs like nights in white satin, rikki don’t lose this number and a day in the life…just a lot of fun for the price)

I completely agree. I don't "play" guitar I always say I play at guitar. But if someone comes in I need to make sure I have certain sounds. So I have a basic Fender Strat with a satin neck and a pre amp switch built into it. I them have an ice blue Fender Telecaster MIM American Spec I built, with a Hot P90, almost a P100 in the neck and a texmex pickup in the bridge. It has a 4 way switch with the last pos. in series. That is my favorite for now. I have a Tobacco Burst, American Clone of a Les Paul Standard with a 1st gen PRS pickup in the neck and a 68 Humbucker in the bridge. I also have 2 Yamaha Pacifica's both set up in SSH "super strat" one has pickups set up for 70's rock tones that scream clean. The other pick ups are set up as a modern Jackson SL3 Soloist metal guitar no clean here. I also have 2 basses both Ibanez P bass but one has actives. I have on order(backorder) a Steinberger Bass.

The guitars I have, are the guitars I could get. I haven't usually been in a situation where I could choose what I got. Way back to when I was ten and first played a guitar, which was a black Gibson Les Paul that a high school senior let me play and taught me "smoke on the water" imagine that. I wanted to play since I was 6, but didn't own a guitar until I was 16. Which I still have, an Alvarez 12 string acoustic, which I have usually used as a 6 string.. I have venturo bruno nylon string. A Yamaha F-310P, which I found at a yard sale. Two Fender Squire strats. One I found the body in a dumpster, so I put Gibson pickups on it, instead of the usual fender strat types. I tried putting a roller saddle bridge for a Gibson les Paul on it, but it didn't work. So I am waiting to get a fender telecaster bridge to put on it. But I got the electronics to work. I painted the body myself too.
I got a New York pro, which is a cheaper version of something like 17:58 And I have an indio that has that look. I would like to own a black gibson les paul, as that was the first guitar I played. Or a telecaster, never even had the chance to play one.

I love to hang my axes on the wall, they are like art to me… so color and finish are important … I rotate them through my garage studio to my living room and kitchen / dining space (don’t worry, they don’t get heat or smoke, it’s 13 to 16 feet from the stove!) so that I play them all regularly as possible…. I started as a drummer, then picked up guitar… I have acoustics and ukuleles… but as for electric guitars ….
I buy mostly sub $500 even sub $300 guitars (an Xaviere semi hollow sunburst tele with 2 gold foils… it’s nice!), a “Grote” green “photo faux top” semi hollow tele - I put a GFS lipstick in the bridge! Sounds nice!) … at my playing level I can’t justify more expensive ones (as some of the other commenters have said) … and they are mostly sonically different to some extent… Squiers (desert sand duo sonic, surf green Jaguar, shell pink Cyclone, lake placid blue FSR $200 tele with GFS gold foil in neck) Epiphones (cherry SG, flame top Les Paul with Duesenberg trem I installed, Pelham blue P-90 ES-339 with Duesenberg trem I installed, and a sunburst P-90 Casino coupe) MIM Fender candy apple red tele and sunburst Jazz bass, MIJ Fender sunburst strat, Gretsches (silver baritone and gold top single cut electromatic with Bigsby I installed)… a red Ibanez AFS75T (from eBay for $250), a black G and L tele with a six way Freeway switch… my “jewels” are a natural Gibson V2 that was a 19th birthday gift from my parents… it stays in the garage studio! … and newest acquisition: Squier bass VI in Olympic white with mint pickguard. Collecting inexpensive guitars is cheaper than owning a boat, I know, I owned a boat.

I have friend who bought a pair of Telecasters back in like 1972 at a local store in small town Alberta, Canada. Played one and wore it out, left the other in the closet and basically forgot about it. He now has a pristine one, and its well-worn mate with softly rounded neck and frets, and a patina that no custom shop will ever match. Both are blonde with white pick guard. It’s a trip to see them side by side.
Another friend with a well cared-for ‘65 Deluxe Reverb let’s us guitar players use it if we ask nicely, and the Tele’s sound awesome through it.

Nice to see the Kiesel CT6 getting some love, this model is basically a "PRS Killer" for half the money and unlike the PRS "Custom" 22/24, you can actually customise pretty much everything on it.
Also, the whole myth of ''Kiesel stock pickups are bad'' is pretty much BS as you can see when somebody like Rick says, they're great. And even if you don't like their stock pickups ( they make a wide variety from classic PAF's to high output ceramic ones) , they give you the option to send to them whatever aftermarket pickups you like and they will install them for you, when building your guitar.

32:00 I had a Badass II bridge on a '98 MIM P-Bass for a good 15+ years...and it seemed to only have the real crispy, zingy high end (regardless of where the tone control was set). I recently took it off and put on a vintage-style bridge, and couldn't be happier!
I've had too many basses over the years (really only regret selling a Modulus Quantum 6 string with a Kahler bridge that was harder than hell to set up, and a MIJ Fender Marcus Miller J-Bass that had a terrible buzz which could have just been fixed with some different pickups), but now have an upright, 2 P-Basses (one with flats, one with rounds), a 5 string HH Sting Ray, a fretless "Frankenbass" J-Bass, a short scale 5 string, and my first electric guitar (sparkly Squier Tele) to start learning on.

I bought a Kramer for some experimental playing and forgot about the Ibanez for a long time, even though the Kramer was solid. When I would pick up the Ibanez it felt refreshing. I sold everything in the early '90s when I quit music to focus on racing. Now I regret selling out. I am playing again, but I suck:)

Lake Placid Blue - especially with a maple neck - is just about the BEST color out there! Especially once it begins to age and then you can see the sort of turquoise and green come out is so awesome!

I'm not a giant fan of them but they look great on certain Classic finishes especially that black, that is fantastic looking. Those inlays look even greener against that black finish, awesome. Cracks me up that they put a "Standard" truss rod cover on it. I gotta get me a black Classic with those Green Goblin inlays.

An amazing collection guys. Being an average wage working stiff, my collection of four electrics is a little more modest, but the source of much pride and satisfaction. 1 x Mexican Strat in arctic white (love it), Epiphone Les Paul Standard in Blue burst (nice), Epiphone 'Inspired by Gibson' 1961 Les Paul reissue SG standard in aged cherry with Gibson pickups and hardware (my newest baby) and a Squire Telecaster, black with red burst and red tortoise shell pickguard (currently, believe it or not, my favourite go to axe and sounds sweet on all settings).

I truly hate sunburst. It's a cop-out for lazy lutiers. And when the tribute came out, I fell in love with it. No bindings, no burst of any sort, just a stock basic Gibson that fulfils all my needs. Just perfect!

  • @t3hgir
    @t3hgir 3 роки тому

Since you asked Rick... what I've been playing lately
sunburst Ibanez 5 string Sr standard model with active humbuckers (i like the passive setting most), lots of tonal options. I have it in A# strung with .135-.050 for some Meshuggah full band covers I'm working on.
Stained Satin Red Jackson Dinky 8 multiscale 8 string. I recently took out the stock pickups and put in a DiMarzio D-activator 8 wired master volume only. It was a good sounding pickup, incredible searing ceramic lead tone but for the chunky djent rhythms I'm using that guitar for the pickup was a bit too hot, resulting in some fizz. I did some searching and found that some guys use neck pickups in the bridge with good results. I had the D-activator neck sitting around and since it's lower output figured why not. Now it's noticeably "djentier" with palm mutes and has more clarity. The multiscale design is pretty great, I love that the high strings are not at a higher tension like they would be on a 27 scale non fanned fret for example. I plan on eventually replacing the plastic nut with graphtech but it's a weird shape that's not standard sized. I will need to just shape one from a blank nut slab for an acoustic saddle (I saw some people doing this for 8 string DIY nuts) I usually have it tuned F standard (also Ab 7 string tuning, every string half step down) but since I'm working on covers of some 'Shuggah songs from the album Nothing I have the low F tuned to E with an .080 gauge :) Really helps keep things in tune.
Natural Gloss Alder Fender Am Strat., great rosewood board, nice neck. Handed down from my Dad, it was originally HSS, then SSS with vintage noiseless. They were okay pickups but I wanted a good set of true single coils. Eventually while it was on the bench I thought to make it like an HSH super strat since the body had routing for buckers. I replaced the bridge with a new gotoh/wilkinson, got a custom tortoise HSH guard and full electronics. Just deciding on pickups now. It's between a DiMarzio Fred, True Velvet, PAF Pro set or maybe the new Vai Utopia pickups. OR Fishman fluence HSH set...

Yay... lots of fun, I also found Dave less than enthusiastic when I asked him about swapping out the fret markers on my '03 Classic, but I rewired it '50s style with some low wind Mojo Tones. My Carvin CS4 still has the original pickups even though I keep saying I want try something else. I have this JB Player (white with double black binding) parts caster that I put together in the '80s with a stacked EMG select in the neck positoin and an SD Full Shred in the bridge with no tone control that ended up getting used more than anything else over the years. :0)

i gotta be honest...my favorite guitar is a 1996 squier 50th anniversary strat. when i bought it, it was the silk butter neck that sold me. it sounded like ass, but i put a loaded pickguard in it with 50s fender pups and a brass trem block, and this old hunk of junk really woke up. it's my workhorse guitar right now.

  • @plefevre

Don't try to justify it Rick, just roll with it man. We all understand, your wife may not but hey, you're gonna do it anyway. I bought a 1975 Les Paul Custom 25th Anniversary in Cherry burst when I was 16 from a local store and kept it until I was about 35. I had a young family and needed the dough. Really wish I still had it, it was a beauty. I started buying Strats about 6 years ago, never owned a Fender before, I always considered myself a Gibson guy. Now I love Strats. I've got 3 at the moment, an Olympic white MIJ, a 2019 Electron green Player Series and a David Gilmour replica CAR with EMG DG20 pickups that I built myself from separate 50's style parts. I hope to add a Les Paul or two back into my collection sometime soon.

Rick, I always try to justify having around 25 guitars and basses so don't feel bad. At least you buy for a purpose, I buy impulsively because I see someone playing a certain model or something to that effect. When I do buy I usually buy the Epiphone or Squier budget models because I can't justify the price of a Gibson or Fender just because of my impulses. I used to play live alot and I only had a few basses that suited me well for live sound, a Rickenbacker 4003 and Fender Precision. I bought a Epiphone Firebird VII(Red) because Mike Campbell used to have on in the early 70s, I modified my Gold Top Epiphone with Gibson clear bobbin P90s to try to sound like Mike Campbell. Everyone has their reasons and the only one you should have to answer to is yourself. Who Knows maybe you will influence someone to buy their dream guitar.

Thanks Rick and guitar dojo guy (Dave). I'm focusing on my guitar skill so I only have two acoustics (metal resonators), so now I have the 5 watt world thing going on. Oh saw he had posted too. There's more but I'll expand it it below. Rick did play a role in rekindling my guitar interest.
Funny thing the first video I saw was with Dave was the wtf gibson one and called him guitar dojo since that stood out from subsequent videos. Also Rhett is pretty cool (saw his channel as well)
in college I met my friend, he has tons of guitars, his fam is old money so instead of collecting planes, trains, and automobiles (and boats), like his forefathers, he has a guitar thing. When we graduated, I started working (and had picked up guitar) and we'd shop, but usually it was him shopping and me drooling or getting that one guitar or amp every 6 mo or so. I had dozens of guitars, several amps and was starting pedal picking . . . .and he had hundreds of each. We both could barely play* and I got into video gaming, and sold most of my collection, partly to pay for the monster PC I was building and monitors and speaker system.
*I knew basic rhythm and cowboy chords plus other chords up an down the neck in college my spanish friend would carry his guitar and serenade girls to get phone numbers so I would be back up / wingman for him (his family makes guitars in spain and he was the international / exchange student studying business).
Years later, strangely enough I saw Ricks main chan last year and thought about playing. I recalled the moments . . . My rich buddy called me and we talked about guitars and he was on a another buying spree and so I went with him. In the shop saw this chrome (nickel plated brass) metal resonator and played it. They had a bluegrass guy pick it up and it sounded like a banjo in his hands. But in mine it was this metal ring meets bell tone, strange but I liked it. So took it home.
Been playing since ... even in a band

Love looking through your guitars. I have a 5 string Jazz same color as yours. I love the color and how it plays. I have the fancy version with the noiseless pickups. It works for me. I can turn up one pickup and the other off and no hum. Had a Mexican jazz had to run both pick ups at the same level to get rid of the hum.

You know, in my humble opinion there is nothing more sexy that a black Gibson Les Paul with cream pick up rings, pick guard and a cream switch ring. I did it to my black Les Paul custom. Not real fond of the cream pickups, though, but I do like the exposed coils. Black coils would look better, I think anyway. I have 8 electric guitars and all but my 1989 Explorer have had mods that I did or had done. As well as 4 acoustics. Guitars are awesome, I play a different one every day in bed when I wake up and have my coffee.
