Owned a Mark 1 Golf GTI back in 1990/1991 and then had a Pug 205 GTI 1.6 from 1992 to 1996 The Golf was great, but the Pug was incredible - best car I've ever driven. The 205 GTI is king of all hot hatches and until something better comes along, always will be.
@macnerd93 205 T16 is the ultimate rally car. It owned Quattro at it's really beginning, and the Quattro wasn't even close. The only thing I give to the Quattro is the sound.
Let's not forget that rally spectators in Portugal at the time were almost suicidal in their attempts to get close to the action, as if they were playing toreador with the cars. I wonder how much that had to do with the RS200 crash.
Group B was banned for a number of reasons. 1. the safety aspect for both competitors and spectators. 2. Bernie Eccelstone buying the rights to F1 and pretty much the FIA, didn't want a championship in the world that was bigger than F1,i.e WRC at the time. 3. because there was a market crash and car manufactures wanted to cut budgets in motorsport. 4. because the car companies could no longer afford to spend and waste millions on homolagation specials, selling road versions for buttons!
If I remember correctly, I think a few RS200's were donated to the Essex police. Imagine looking in your rear view mirror and seeing that coming up on your ass.
@macnerd93 mate 205 WILL be remembered alot more than the golf purely because of it being in Group B you cant say golf is better just because it's better built and most of them arent driven to death. golf had a soul. 205 had a racing pedigree. so bith cars will end in the history books
well clarkson is wrong the vauxhall chevette is originaly a opel kadett c city but that was far from a HOT hatch compared to the chevette hsr BUT istt still a kadett c with different lights
@JBofBrisbane Yep, they were fanatical and beyond stupid. As tragic as the accident was, it was kind of Darwinian selection in action as those too stupid to mind their own safety kind of deserved what happened to them. Their selfishness not only put themselves in danger but also made driving even more hazardous for the drivers who had to worry about spectators as well as focus on the road.
The 306 gti6 was nearly as good as the 205gti. Nearly. Then Peugeot lost the plot. Heavier, bigger, duller and ugly gurning faces. And no, I'm not commenting on der Jeremy. He is is like a beautiful waife compared to the recent Pug outings. He handles better too.
@macnerd93 Looks result of Group B at end of 1984 and 1985 when 205 appeared, and see were Quattro was placed and where was the 205. RS200 was not even close, and Stratos was since long retired(it was the 037 and Delta S4, the Stratos is from the 70's). And the typical garbage lie "I owned .. and it failed in parts " keep it for you. Are you also one of these youtubers who claim to have owned thousands of cars?

Clarkson at his best. Serious motoring journalism, not scripted cocking about with his mates.
A pleasure. The song really fits the epic sight of that rally 205.
