to think that today a Chevette HSR or a Sunbeam Lotus will fetch the highest prices as a classic car (with proper world championship rally pedigree!). Proper RWD driverscars.
How is it that I see no mention of the Alfasud? Bloody rustbucket, but, what a car especially with the twin carb 1500 engine, was that not very close to being the first hatchback ever? ( Not that the first ones were a true hatch...)
My brother and I went in opposite directions...he got a job working on Bovis homes and bought a Golf GTI I went into investment banking and bought an ice white Ferrari like Crockett's..pure driving bliss
There is nothing like watching Jeremy Clarkson stuff on a Saturday morning with a nasty hangover. He always, always makes me laugh and hurts my head and makes my cough.
Mk1 Golf Gti. Fab car. Have owned 3 of them. Shame that regulations meant that the MK5 weighed DOUBLE that of the Mk1. Have driven one. Not as much fun....not by a long shot.
No, the Cabrio is a girly car. My friend had a GTI back in the day and it was really fun. It also was the subject of one of the most fun car commercials of all time to the tune of "Little GTO" sung in German. I'd love to find this posted somewhere
It's probably called a "hot hatchback" because it lacked the one feature that made the MG B that classic car it is today, it's a true blue British open top roadster and thus cool, very cool indeed (especially in Norflok in November)
@Brera011 Yes i remember the Bagheera didnt they have 3 seats in the front. Stange sports car that rusted so bad all over but looked cool when new. Dont get me started on the Capri. I had them all mk 1 mk1 facelift mk2 and mk3 had every thing in the mk1 version from a 1600 xl a 1600 gt a 1600 gtxlr a 2000gt a 2000gt v4 a 3000 gxl and a 3000E . Yes i jacked the back up added richard grant deep snow plough front spoilers a slatted rear window visor and had pioneer TSX 30 speakers on the shelf
i once had one of those orginal Golf gti. it was all mine for 27 years.i went trough two marriages with my GTI. now, i've had Mercedes and Bmw and a couple of Audis and even a Porsche, but for pure simple fun from driving, i think it was even better then the porsche 911 i once had. , i were forced into selling it when my fourth son were born, but i will always miss my beloved Golf GTI
@MrCartman2578 oh dear, have you not checked Wikipedia. The initial Opel version of the car the Kadett was apparently not a hatchback. Since we are talking hot hatchbacks, I think you will find dear mister Clarkson is right? In fact, according to Wikipedia, the Vauxhall Chevette, in its final two years, was unusually exported to Germany, and badged as a Kadett, and best of all, it has become a cult classic with some Germans.
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH - The title of "greatest car ever made" should go to a car that is not only a design and engineering marvel but also one that has had a huge impact on the history and culture of cars and indeed the world.
I have a 2009 VW Rabbit, and even with a big 2.5L inline 5 in front and the whole car weighing 2900 lbs, it handles fantastically! It's not as good as the early Golfs and Jettas, of course, but it's by no means "wallowy."
Walter Ulbricht The Manta is not in the same category as the Golf GTI and Escort Xr3i, the Manta is a coupe and the car that it always was a competitor to was the Capri.
@@michaelrawson6261 Owned both kept the Capri.... i'd love to have my Manta back too but would choose the Capri all day every day over the Manta, simply faster and better looking.
@mofunzonecom the new chryslers r now being made with european materials by alfa romeo, well practicly everything is made by them, but its a BIG improvment. the fords r made well too, and chevy EVERYTHING literally EVERYTHING is hard and plastic
@AUTORECOVERYUK Remember the Matra Simca Bagheera? For a short period I had one. Great driving, but bad mechanics. I do remember all the cars you've mentioned and they have all become very rare like the Alfasud any many others of that era, the era when you could do your own maintenance and tuning. Still miss my '75 Capri 2 litre 4 cylinder with the black vinyl top, 4 bucket seats and all its rust.
@Brera011 Ok i put my hands up i owned a Talbot Matra Rancho a Talbot Avenger and a Talbot Tagora. Bet not many people know what a Rancho or a Tagora are. But i can sum them up in 3 simple words Rusty Crap Electrics. The 80's were great loved living the era and miss those years so so much.
i like clarkson but i don't like that comment he made about Egypt. The Egyptian pound was more expensive than the USD back in the 80s. We could've brought Britain with that :D
@ManuelFerara I take the joke hehehe great about saying the Toledo hehehe definitly the car of the world hahahah. yes i Think too that the vw must be considered the car of the century because was virtually the same car between 1938-2003. Greetings from Spain

"They were Rotten and Vicious."
Clever.
I like the mk1 Golf GTI, but I love the Chvette and the Sunbeam.
to think that today a Chevette HSR or a Sunbeam Lotus will fetch the highest prices as a classic car (with proper world championship rally pedigree!). Proper RWD driverscars.
ive had 3 Escorts, a 1.4 and two RS Turbo's. God I love those cars!
Love it Simple Minds; Waterfront, 205gti and Clarkson!!
The first (hot) hatch was the Talbot/Simca/Chrysler Horizon, the Golf was actually a copy.
that is not possible; Golf was there before any of this Chrysler-shit was ever thought of. I know it, because Ihad had three of them...
@@gdp007 Again. Wrong, sir.
@@manoman0 what you.are thinking of, I guess, could be the Simca 1100. But I don,t know, If you ever tought of it...

and it was reliable. My father had a regular one, did 250.000 kms in it and only replaced perishable parts like brakes, clutch, spark plugs etc.
I am now officially a Clarkson fan thanks to this clip. BTW, the bloke defending the Ford Escort in the pub scene could be my kid brother. :)

Fiat Ritmo 130 Tc was faster than any of the stock GTI Golfs
Haffschlappe but the fiat ritmo would brekdown all the time and the VW golf gti had better build quality, more reliable and more fun
I had an Abarth Strada 130, awesome car
It's probably called a "hot hatchback" because it lacked the one feature that made the MG B that classic car it is today, it's a true blue British open top roadster and thus cool, very cool indeed (especially in Norflok in November)
My left ear was delighted by this.
The sound track is amazing
Every program he has ever been in has an amazing soundtrack.
TheAdekrijger agreed 100%
Clarkson has good taste in music.

Where is Fiat Ritmo/Strada Abarth 130 TC?
Proud VW kid since 1986
@jsuttonus What about the GLH? Reliable, fast, fun....and practical
Compared to the Lancia Delta Integrale, it is indeed!
Haven't read the thread, but GEE-TEE-EYE, FUCK YEAH!
Yeah but here in the U.S. We had Trans ams, z28s, and SS models. Firebirds, cameros, and GTO's. I could go on we had real cars
"the British invented the hot hatch" and therefore also invented the car of the century. Jeremy Clarkson presenting. Why am I not surprised.
not really, the Golf GTI Mk1 entered production 4 years earlier than those you mentioned, so it was those that copied the Golf.
I feel that they were, my sister had one; and I hated it with a vengeance. And I had a Lotus Esprit!
Wasn't the Chevette a Chevy originally and Sunbeam part of Talbot? So far for Britain being the first to create hot hatches...
Still hearing no sound at all????????
BMW 2000 tii touring first hot hatch yes?
I'd get the GTi because.. well.. a hatch is cool.
The British might have invented the 'Hot Hatch,' but the German's perfected it!
id love to own an 80s or even a 90s golf gti as my first car
What about the italians (Abarth? Alfa?)
awwww, I miss the era of colour and mono sound
Everyones entitled to their opinion. You have yours, and I have mine.
No Opel Kadett or Skoda Rapide???
@OwnageProductions03 It's only on the left side, not the right ;)
Uploaded on the day my Fiesta Zetec S was registered! :)
Thanks!
no sound????
classic clarkson this is excellent hahah ford escort type its so true
'The Reflex' by Duran Duran

lol, , Jeremy is hilarious ,
you take his words as funny jokes , nothing more hahaha
The chevette is still on the road with 89k miles
There's a difference between a hatchback and a 'hot hatch'.
LOL Jackie Stewart's comment. xD
where is Starlet Turbo? in hot hatch
my dads first car was a chevette
I still see loads of sunbeams, but their all stripped out rally cars

then i would consed! but techically a car that has space for 4 people small and with a biggish engine is the mini cooper s?
Vauxhall is a German Car Manufacturer called "Opel"
actually it's american, Opel and Vauxhall are property of GM
To be fair, the Chevette HS was completely Vauxhall's thing, which makes it British.
Correct sir
That black golf gti in the white studio is still on the road and has only done 16k

Ok the first GTI was a great hot hatchback, but man.... not the car of the century my god!
@mofunzonecom the volt wasnt even out when you posted this.
actually Austin motor company invented the hatchback in the 50's :P Britain got there first!
lol...clarkson dj .... there is sumting i thought id never c....
It's meant to be tongue in cheek, but it wasn't Opel at the time.
@mofunzonecom Your brain can't go 1mm without recharging. You are mostly right about modern american cars though.
