According to what Andy Wilman wrote in Top Gear Magazine, this was the very beginning of the cheap car challenge tradition. It was supposed to be a film on how good a cheap Porsche can be, but when Jeremy's car broke down so quickly, Jezza decided that old rubbish breaking down was more fun than new cars working perfectly. Thus, the cheap car challenge was born.
eddie90 Did they do that first? I remember seeing it (although I can't find it anymore), and I rather liked it. Though it perhaps wasn't really a classic cheap car challenge. The cars worked quite well, didn't break down and weren't modified in any way. It was more journalistic and less pure entertainment than this Porsche challenge and all the ones after it...

If you ask me the £100 challenge was as entertaining as all the others, especially the ending with the surprise of clarkson having spent only £1 on the car xD
megaspeed2v2 I do stand by the fact that the 100 quid car challenge was mostly intended to show how good a 100 pound car can be. Maybe that's the difference: the 100 quid challenge was ambitious, but not really rubbish. The cars were really surprisingly good, by some stretch it counts as useful consumer advice.. This one was the first of many to genuinely go by that motto.
appelpower1 I agree it was a good factual segment, but I think having a factual element also helps make these things more entertaining, when its pure jokes it wears thin fast.
After the story about his dad, I just realized that every Jeremy's porsche for challenge or special episodes are always 928
Honestly don’t blame him, if a car they built and lent me to review was the reason I got to say goodbye to my dad it would probably be my favourite car ever made.

He chose it twice, he talked about the reason he loved the 928 in the Patagonia special how he was able to because he was testing it for the 1977-2000 top gear rendition, and he found out his dad was in the hospital and he only had one chance to say goodbye to him, he got himself down to the hospital and was able to say goodbye to him because of that 928.

If I recall that's where he gained his appreciation for fast cars, cuz without a really fast car he might never have got to say goodbye. I think when he got there his dad passed away only 30 minutes later. I bet the chicken he brought for his ma was still warm

@Ezra Redgwell My thoughts exactly! :) And they wouldn't be able to find a Porsche of any kind that still runs (in Canada) for less than $4,000 Cdn. Best they could do is get a set of four tires (maybe). The prices in Canada for everything are of another world. Everything is more expensive here. There's no such thing as a "cheap" car in Canada. A Hyundai Accent starts at $15,000 in Canada.

For me, this was the episode when Top Gear crossed over from car-bore show to mainstream entertainment. It was what Hammond did to fix up his car. I actually laughed out loud.
We all know that Top Gear wasn't about cars (well, apart from some early episodes), it was about these three middle-aged guys who just happened to like cars.
Hammond always scores amazing deals. Definitely the most level headed and frugal of the group
He probably learned from Jason Dawe during his brief time on the show. He was a former used car salesman after all.

Phoenix Intergrale Also he got the hospital 30 minutes before his dad died, and said that he can thank the 170 mile top speed of 928 that he made it there before his dad died.

Thats what makes cars special...when they hold a special sentimental place in your heart for one reason or another. Although it might not be the latest and greatest but to you it is the greatest.

That was above all else the true genius of Top Gear. They really were just three average blokes that never grew past grade school lavatory humor. They reminded us of the simpler times with the friends we grew up with.

I would never have thought to turn a junk beater Porsche nobody in their right mind would want into a practical art project that appeals to car (especially Porsche) enthusiasts. What car guy out there doesn't want a table in their living room that's the engine block of a 928 with glass on top? Just hope they never watched Top Gear. As cool as it is, that engine was a mechanic's nightmare.

Jeremy liked 928s before Argentina got angry. Do you know how hard it would have been to specifically find a 928 with that number plate? It's not as if Porsche sold a zillion of them in the U.K. There were very expensive when they were new, something like £150k in today's money

Loved these challenges when I was growing up, just so entertaining and also introduced me to the world of classic cars. 18 years later at the age of 25 I have finally bought my own 1982 Porsche 944 for £9000, to think 20 years ago they were so cheap! Even project cars are over £5000 so these really have shot up in value in the last few years

i used to do work on a customers Porche 924 back in the late 80' and early 90's , and as far as im aware he still owns it as ive seen him still driving around it in a couple of years ago. they run forever those 924's
