There was always (summer months) fresh figs on our table from as long as I can remember.... Cannot wait to pick a hundred or so from this 5-in-1 fig in the years to come.... And hopefully may even have a few I can share in a summer update... The grafts are doing GREAT! Charles :-)

As long as they are related, you can graft them. For example, any variety of apples onto and apple rootstock... any type of roses on a rose rootstock... any type of avocado onto an avocado rootstock... and any type of fruit in the prunes genus (such as apricots, cherries, almonds, peaches, nectarines and plums) can all be grafted onto the same rootstock! Charles, again you made an amazing video. Please set a reminder to send me a 5 in one fig cutting when you trim your new tree. I can't wait to see the different types of gigs you get along with how you will make another 5 in 1 fig tree for more planting.. can you do that with different tomato plants? That would be awesome because some people have very limited space for tomatoes in summer. Can you save seeds of your favorite plants and start it that way? Like a fig tree??
Thank you SO VERY much for the compliment Randy Rosiello! Regarding the fig cuttings... remind me in January as I do my fig pruning in February. Most of my plants are propagated by creating genetically identical plants by way of cutting or air-layering. Planting seeds is like children... all different. The parent plant are typically a one-in-a-million tree selected for fruit quality, consistent yields, etc, etc... A seedling is not likely to be superior to the parent plant, hence the practice of cloning the plant or tree. Charles :-)

Thank you for the compliment!!! You Chicago Hardy fig variety graft is doing remarkably well... and has grown at least a foot in the past 30 days! And hopeful that it will set some fruit this later summer!!! Grafting tape is the #1 preferred method for securing the grafting and retaining moisture at the site. The other figs you shared are all thriving in tiny 1/2 pint size pots... graduating slowly into gallons, and so forth... I will share them in my summer update on this grafted tree to compare the vigor between 1st year cuttings and 1st year grafting. Great to hear from you!!! Charles :-)

The family fig tree was brought into the US by my grandpa that visited Yugoslavia (or one of those surrounding countries) on a trip about 30+ years ago. I remember my mom planting cuttings of those figs between many of her vegetables that would get some light for the first month only... then shade for 2-3 months, and by summer these figs would come through the tomato bushes over 6-7 feet in height and continue growing through summer and early fall. Very fast growing variety. My grandpa had 8 children and each of them had a tree on their properties growing up. My grandpa always managed to keep his tree close to 7-10 feet (in-ground) by severely pruning each fall. However, most homes that grew this variety (including mine) was kept at 8-10 feet, but would grow to 20+ feet during the growing season, with typically 1 fig per leaf--so obviously very high yielding. The figs are green with a very red interior. Sweet, but not the sweetest....maybe a good thing depending on your pallet. Please keep me posted!

I wonder if you might create a new "playlist" that includes the whole "going from my grandfather's variety of fig tree to 5 in 1, to 7 in 1, to the final 10 in 1". It's too hard finding them. I still haven't found the one after you cut back the original fig tree to the Y in order to create the branches you were going to graft.

Thanks to your video I bought myself a fig plant however its only a stick (about 5 feet tall)at the moment with no leaves. Looks quite dead to be honest. will it sprout leaves and branches in spring? Any idea how I can promote the development of branches? I don't want to be left with a single stem plant. Thanks in advance
Dear Charles: How much sun should fig trees actually get during the day in the growing season? I live in Amarillo, TX. We get tons of sun all year, so I've been growing my tree in a large pot. In the winter I bring it inside the garage because we also get the killer north winds where temperatures plummeted to 0 last winter (with a wind chill of -20). Since I started watching your videos and learning about winterizing, I think next spring I can plant my tree in the front of my house which faces south and is protected from the north winds. But that area gets a lot of sun and as I'm learning so much about sun damage through your videos, I want to make sure I don't kill my fig. Thank you for your videos! Please advice.

Hello D.O. I hope to have a taste test on several of my fig varieties in my garden in the upcoming few weeks, in addition to interviewing 1-3 fig experts that should be published here soon. Stay tuned! I've just started growing (this year) the Strawberry Verte fig which I heard was ranked very high on flavor... another very popular variety is Figo Preto. I personally love the aesthetic beauty of the fruit & flavor of the Panach (a/k/a Tiger) fig which has stripped fruit that taste great! I should have a better response in the upcoming weeks.... Hello D.O. The owner of the Laguna Hills Nursery (Santa Ana), Gary, is VERY knowledgeable on fig trees and usually has a huge selection to choose from. They also carry IV Organic product there. Thank you for the compliment! :-) The approach grafting method works best when the plants grafted are active, so spring, summer and maybe early fall. Most professionals rely on the "bud grafting" technique in the fall. Late winter, you can accomplish the splice, whip-n-tongue, crown, etc methods. I love the approach grafting because the success rate is something close to 99%.... you just graft them and watch them heal. Once the callous cambium tissues are formed, your done! Mark your calendar for January, as I perform most sever pruning in February-- just weeks before the fig buds begin to swell. Also, a great time to plant the cuttings! I'd be happy to share... and I have at least 2 other much smaller container figs from this "parent" fig (clones) that I can share. Just keep caring for it, as you have been doing. Water when the soil gets dry, but never bone try. Never keep the soil too damp either, as that can cause root rot. Fertilize with an organic granular fertilizer in the spring, summer and early fall. And then just wait.... as it gets bigger and stronger, you will reap the gain! It can take 1-3 years depending on the vigor of the fig tree/ variety. Please keep me posted! Charles :-)

It's a green fig variety my grandfather brought from his travels to Yugoslavia about 30+ years ago. Tree typically grows, without pruning, to 20-30 feet... very vigorous... but not the best tasting... hence the need for grafting! :-)

Great suggestion! And I agree with you! But... my favorite grafting method is approach grafting and fitting all those pots around to create the crown would have been challenging. What's the growing zone for figs

Figs should be grown in growing zones 6 or higher; however, there are some exceptions. Here is a helpful link:

If you bring my figs into the protection of the garage (or cool basement) you can grow figs in Alaska. I keep mine in an area that is protected but still freezes. They don't seem to mind freezes near 10 degrees F. Just don't subject them to a killing frost once they start to leaf out.

Zone 7 is what most the research states; however as Richard wrote below (as well as I am aware of many customers in freezing zones where figs would not thrive) that successfully grow them in pots and over winter them indoors in the house or garage. Thank you for sharing your comments! :-) Charles
