    This is the kind of things schools should be teaching students by the end of high school. This was common knowledge 100 years ago. People " teach your children well" ... We owe it to our children to educate them on this stuff.

    thanks for sharing. My father used almost this exact method and showed me how the roots grew on the stems to make clones like these. We did not know the words clones etc but that is what he made. I was about 13 at the time. Now I am 82 years old.

    Hello from India. Thank you sir for sharing such valuable information. I was researching on various methods and sources to obtain more plants for my orchard, but buying them has become extremely expensive. Add transport and labor costs to that and it is simply too expensive for a small farmer like me. Once I discovered air layering, I shared this idea with fellow farmers (so they could also save money) who are more experienced than me, but they said I was stupid to think a new plant can be made out of an existing one. This video not only gave me the science behind the method, but also showed a way for me on how to expand my orchard with almost no cost. You have changed the way I will farm for the rest of life. Thank you sir from the bottom of my heart.

    My father in law had the most colorful beautiful crotons. When husband and I bought our first house, dad came by with 20 potted plants. We were like no, you don't have to give us another expensive wedding gift. He smiled and told us he started those plants for us when we got married 4 yrs previously, Several Christmas palms in sets of 2, 3, and 4. Most special a dozen crotons all 2 ft tall or better and a rose bush taken from his mother's rose 40 yrs previously. Yes, air layering works. He used tin foil to wrap up a bit of dirt in sphagnum moss.

    I have used many different methods and styles to air layer fig trees and always thought that they took so long to form roots. I tried your method just as you have shown and I am ecstatic with the results and to form roots in less then 1/2 the time of every other method. It actually took 4 weeks tops and the new trees were in their pots! Great job Sir Charles.

I particularly appreciated three things about it: (1) the concise summary of exactly what materials you need up front; (2) your use of simple, easy-to-obtain items whenever feasible (a plastic bottle; string; aluminium foil) rather than expensive, "professional-grade" materials; and (3) your clear and succinct explanation of the plant biology (auxins from the top; cytokinins from the bottom; and the logic behind cutting or scoring in particular places on the plant to encourage root development). Many thanks.

    Instead of using a razor blade to cut through the cambian layer, I achieved the same results by using a pipe cutting tool typically used to cut copper pipe. It has a single circular blade that when you tighten up around the branch, the blade sinks in to the depth that you desire. Simply rotate the tool around the branch. Open up the clamp slide it to the next position and repeat the process. You will have to make a vertical slit connecting both lines in order to remove the section of cambian. Easy cheesy🌳

    I wish I knew about this before my dad sold the family home when we moved out. My grandmother planted an orange tree that yielded the most delicious fruit I've ever tasted, that tree is still there and is about 30 years old. I'm willing to travel 2500 miles to go there and ask the new owner for a chance to air layer a branch.

    Very educational & new to me. Going to the shop now to buy the kit and give it a go! I even read you can do this with cork oaks... interesting
    We recently moved from the UK to Portugal so a looot of the things you mentioned (also in the video "i'm doing everything right, yet my tree is dying") are incredibly useful to us.
    Not only very educational, but also enjoyable to watch. Keep up the good work!

    I found this video SO helpful. I'm being forced to move in 5 weeks and I'm heartbroken to leave my garden. I hope my Air-Layered Citrus trees will root in time. Since I just now discovered this they will only have 5 weeks (minus 1 day). Does anyone have any advice about what to do to still help them root if they aren't yet ready to cut but I HAVE to cut them?

      Rob. Today everyone is into air laying everywhere you see a mounded tree, in fact it's become a landscape epidemic. When suffocated root system is forced to grow copious amounts of adventitious roots throughout the added above ground mulch soil layer. But like drowning swimmers having no sense of direction, air roots incircle and strangle trunk.

    Thank you so much for this video. I previously attempted to air layer a fiddleleaf fig that had grown so large it was growing across the ceiling and was tipping its pot over from being too top heavy. It was a fail. I think there were so key points you presented which may have made it more successful. My question is what happened to the original fig tree as it looked like there were no lower leaves. Does this process always have to be done on the main trunk and at the top of tree you want to clone? Can you do this cloning on a side branch? Again this was a fantastic video!

    So much more sophisticated than what I do to fruit trees. I literally just pick up the printings off of my trees and put them in cups and then 90% of them die which is okay. I’ll have to take some stuff from this video though like the hormone powder and scoring the cambium prior to pruning something off-see if I can’t get some better results. SUPER informative.

    I thought I would share what I know.....You don’t need rooting hormones, however it does speed the process up. You can use cinnamon or aloe vera as a rooting hormone. Use the cinnamon powder on your cuttings the same as any powdered rooting hormone. Use aloe vera by breaking the leaf open and dipping your cuttings into the gel, or spreading it in between the nodes as in the air layering. Method.

    • @matthewhopkins7042
      @matthewhopkins7042 3 роки тому +5

      Usually stuff sold as 'rooting hormones' are just anti fungal agents that slow the infection of fungus and bacteria into the wound. Cinnamon and aloe vera, that you suggested, has zero effect on rooting from a hormonal point of view, they are an old wives tale way of slowing / stopping fungus and bacteria though. I have tested cinnamon extensively and it is about as effective as the most absolute dilute proper anti fungal spray I could find (i.e. putting a single drop of lime sulfur into a big spray can) so it's quite worthless. Aloe vera is probably not very effective either compared to proper chemicals. I suspect you've watched those Indian dudes who show you neat 'alternatives' to things, like using a banana, too right? Usually wasting an entire banana in the process. They LOVE cinnamon and aloe. So clearly they've never double blind tested it to see whether it even works.

    • @tinaknutsen
      @tinaknutsen 3 роки тому +3

      @@matthewhopkins7042 I have tested these methods, I doubt you tried them, because you are trying to make a buck off the stuff you sell in your link such as Clonex so you can convince other people they need to “buy” rooting hormones when in fact they don’t!!! These methods I learned through horticulture, which I took 4 years of and have seen for myself. We all have something to learn, so don’t be so narrow minded and prejudice. You think your videos are better than some Indian dude doing videos? 👍

    I’m doing this with a Norway spruce tree in both neighbor’s and our yard. I tried growing by seed from pine cone, takes too long and not always successful I have a feeling it would be more successful to try to root a cutting and that’s difficult too. Air layering is best and last option in this case.

My friend gave me some runners from an Ocean Spray strawberry plant, the very best I have ever tasted and I cloned all of the leaves by cutting them off the runner and laying them in 1/2" of water, and in three days they had roots, and a week later I planted them out in my yard. I now have 60 vigorous strawberry plants that are better tasting than any I have ever eaten. Thank you so much for your time and effort.

      Hello Steve. I wonder if your neighbor would have said 'yes' to air-layering, as cloning is generally associated as a negative word. If your neighbor does not give you the time to air-layer; you could just take a cutting and likely be successful cloning that tree! And, yes, I'll try to do an update on that air-layer soon!!
