Although they are fondly referred to as militants, but they say its a struggle for self determination. In this Episode, STRIAGHTalk looks into the struggle for self determination in Africa taking a cue from the Nigeria's Niger-Delta Activist, Asari Dokubo. TVC NEWS STRAIGHTalk with Asari Dokubo, a Niger-Delta Activist provides answers to boiling questions on the rise of Insurgent groups in Africa.

This is the type of men I like listening to...we should try to think about the issues in Nigeria as being a slow process! Everything happening now didn't just happened...their beginning can be traced from far away. Nigeria should have tried to solve her issues from the root. A country of Unified diversity...We should learn to process minerals and oils in areas found. Commonwealth is about using a country's resources to help states that don't have natural resources. If oil is found in Rivers state, It should be processed in Rivers state, owned by the Rivers state government, and the proceed, can be used to develop other parts of Nigeria. I am speaking as an Akwaibomite and international relations student. About the language issues, we should stop this three language thing. God knew all these will happen, that is why he put all the major natural resources in minority-considered states!

My dear, my town in Imo state is full of hydro carbon and there is an oil well in my town.
Today, November, 2021, the town does not have EVEN A SINGLE MOTORABLE ROAD !!!
In fact, one of the old roads, built by IWUANYANWU, during Mbakwe time, got so bad, that it turned into a big gully, divided a village, into two. No one cares!!!!! From Okorocha, who deputy was from this town to Iwuanyanwu, from a neighboring town who now tarred a road from his house to Owerri. These are people parading as Igbo leaders!!!
Give the resources to the owners and take taxes from them!!!!
Every, single part of Nigeria is blessed with natural and human resources. Let's get to work and find out what we are endowed with!!!
Stop robbing Peter to pay Paul.

    Mr. Asari has very important issues that cannot be ignored. Local people must have an increased stake in the resources of their community. I however think that he is very ethnocentric and myopic as regards his identity. What Africa needs is not further division into ethnically based states. Look at the examples he cited;
Eritrea separated from Ethiopia but of what benefit has that done to the ordinary Eritrean? Look at South Sudan? After separating based on color and religion from the North, they have turned to inter-ethnic fighting. You cannot always see other ethnicities as enemies. Africa is not the only continent with multiplicity of ethnicities. We have refused to see beyond it. I can almost guarantee Mr. Asari that if the south or the Ijaw separate from greater Nigeria, he would be excluded from power because of his religion which is being used to forment division between the North and the South of the country. What is the difference in Libya? They all speak Arabic(97% plus) and are Muslims(97%+). They fight among CLANS. Ethnicity is no longer the issue. Bad governance breeds all sorts of rivalries.
What we need as Africans is to tackle corruption. It is our biggest cancer. Tribalism isn't. An honest scan of the Nigerian political landscape would reveal corruption endemic among all the political elite of all the ethnic groups and religions whether southern or northern. You need to strengthen the State, not weaken it. And strengthening it means closing the loopholes that allow for corruption so that roads, schools, hospitals and other vital social infrastructure would be constructed other than governors from all States siphoning resources to British accounts.
China is diverse. India is diverse. America is most diverse but the most successful modern nation on earth. Every Ethnic group in Nigeria did not begin from where they are now. I am Ghanaian and our people's history says we came some the Eastern corridor of Nigeria and Benin. You must see beyond tribal sentiments. When you muddle real important issues like those you are talking about with tribalism, you lose the whole point. Nigeria need people with good moral values which you might have but you will do nothing to help your people by preaching tribalism. The current global and economic system would not allow Nigeria to be separated into ethnic States. Check back in recent history about the Igbo(Biafra) struggle. You have good points but extricate from your heart the burden of tribal hate. We all need to. Salaam.

Umar Mohammed but france left Roman empire and how's the situation of France? Europeans settlers in North America separated and became nations known as USA and Canada how are their situation?. they were a lot of tribalism during Roman empire but they separated became independent and formed European union (independently) The problem with black Africans is lack of knowledge and education. even the graduates can't even think properly.

I like the spirit of Asari, I'm an Igbo and a Biafran and do not call myself a Nigerian. The unfortunate thing is that Ojukwu thought about all these a while ago but they didn't listen. Well now that he has declared that half of his lineage is Igbo in a recent interview at Owerri, I think he should join Nnamdi Kanu in the struggle because they are fighting for the same ideal and cause. Ijaw is way too small to survive on it's own and be relevant.

Askari dokubo is quite right, the problems and civil wars in Africa today is as a result of the scramble for Africa, where Africa was butchered and sliced like a meat, many kingdoms that has nothing in common culturally and politically where forced together, the same thing goes for the Middle East. As awolowo said in the 1940s, 'Nigeria is just a geographical expression'

After watching this interview my take is Dokubo Asari has valid points in terms of the resources siphoned by the northerners . Abuja was built from the wealth of the South-South. But there is a blatant neglect of the South-South by the North. Solution: Multifaceted in nature. Build extensively and expansively the South- South the way Abuja was constructed with a master plan comprehensive in nature. All the social infrastructural backbones must be built including but not limited to Good Road Networks, Great Schools, Excellent Hospitals, Awesome Railway/ Waterway systems, Beautiful Shopping Malls, Dynamic Recreational Facilities, Great Urban and Rural Amenities, Manufacturing hubs, Industrial complex’s and others. For far too long the Cabal of born to rule Northerns have undermined the development of Nigeria.

Though I do not wholeheartedly support Asari Dokubo's ideology, but I understand his struggles. I only wish he could be a little more diplomatic about it. It's a crazy world out there, and I think public comments shouldn't be inciteful.
However, I'm appalled at the interviewers bias and unprofessional demeanor. I think he needs a lesson in history and Asari's offer to teach him fell on deaf ears. He has a lot to learn. He is biased and unprofessional. I wouldn't go as far as calling him stupid, he's close. Just because you sit in an interviewer seat doesn't make you smart. Asari is clearly smarter, and he should learn from him

    • @rominiyi1385

That's what I noticed as well. A lot of people have been born into the British conception of Nigeria, and have never picked up a history book to see what that really means. They think their Nigerian Identity is something to be proud of and sacrosanct, whereas in all but name, Nigeria is still a colony of Britain.
If all your oil and gas wealth is controlled by outsiders because they are the ones who have the technology to mine, process and transport it back to their countries, while controlling the international markets where oil is traded (futures contracts and spot prices), and furthermore sell petroleum products back to you, at greatly inflated prices because they see that you are so corrupt and stupid to learn how to process it yourself; and upon all that you being stupid enough to embezzle all the money from oil sales and transfer it back to their banks so that they are getting the oil virtually free, then what are you but a colony, that does not know that you are a colony, but thinks it is a country.
Personally, I do not like Asari's presentation as it seems aggressive, although the lack of knowledge of the interviewer is infuriating. I think he could be far more diplomatic. He is far smarter than the interviewer, though. The interviewer really needs to learn some history.
      Our education system is horrendous..

Impressive interview! Esho Imoudu was not condescending by any measure by taking an easy line of questioning, and Asari Dokubo did himself proud by eloquently expressing himself. I'm of the opinion that together we stand so I do not share his view of the Ijaw people ceding from Nigeria, but what incentive has the nation given to the Ijaw people for them to want to remain part of the union. The Question of AD being the chosen spokesperson for the Ijaws is another matter but credit to him.

No doubt, this guy is being factual. I'm Yoruba by birth and know he's not an empty-headed struggler. The root of the whole aggression is injustice.....that is not to say he never did something for his own pocket as well. Anyway, we can still live together in harmony if justice returns to our country

This is so great and fantastic from Asari Dokubo, Nigeria is a failed state, and we won't forgive British if we all die in slavery, they should call their expired colony zoo country call Nigeria to order for a national conference bcuz the pain is so much that one day every one would ready to die and that would be so bloody deadly
