The one this I always admired about this game and mech assault was the model detail and how smooth the walking animation is. I still think the movement animations are still hands down better than MWO or MW5.
Definitely. The legs actually react to moving up or down terrain, instead of just clipping through the ground like they do in MWO/MW5. Compare the Daishi's movement in this to the one in MWO. They're leagues apart.

Yeah, I never played MW4 and it's cool to see this after realizing how nimble 'mechs are actually meant to be. Like, these things can crouch, right themselves if they fall over, an Atlas can yank your 'mech's arm off and beat you to death with it, hell, a good enough Spider pilot can do backflips if they feel like it. That's what makes these things useful. It's also why pilots can't hit shit in the tabletop game as soon as you start running.
Yeah, its really annoying knowing that the Mech's speed and walk-animation aren't exactly synced as well. You can see the mechs in MW5 "sliding" with each step. I'm surprised PGI, or a modder, hasn't fixed it.

I remember reading the description of the Archer in MW5 and wondered how it was supposed to strike from a distance and keep a range gap when it could only run at 64 kph, but seeing the Archer in this game running at 100 made a lot more sense, lol.

I MISS MY CHILDHOOD! (plus i always remember my Dad's the one who bought me Mechwarrior 2, that memory is forever etched on my mind).
I'm not one to demand a remake lightly (they're mostly just lazy and an admission of a studio that they can't do anything new and interesting) but this game absolutely deserves one. It's a shame that MW4 and all its expansions are abandonware and get increasingly more difficult to run on modern hardware and operating systems with each passing year.
I hate how whenever I try to live stream a let's play of MW4 Mercs, OBS shits kittens and puts it in a tiny box instead of going fullscreen resolution.
I was a tester on MW4 and BK, and looking back makes me realize how much 'mech quality varied. I used to think it was just later releases being worse, but I think that's only because my friend showed me all the worst 'mechs back in the day. (We'd both be in the multiplayer testing lab, he was still working on MW games while I moved on to Rise of Nations, and so I didn't get to really dig into Mercs/MekTek much.) But watching this video I think it's just that 'mech quality varied a lot with _every_ release; there were some derpy, bad-looking designs in MW4 and BK, and also some awesome 'mechs in the later releases. One factor was scaling. While I think the Catapult overall looked great in this series, the cockpit window is _ridiculously gigantic._ I think one or two 'mechs might've actually been scaled up from smaller sizes (with no changes to textures or anything) so that might've been what happened there. Another factor is _the source material_ varies a lot. And we aren't even talking about mechs stolen from another IP entirely (since I don't think any of those Robotech/Macross mechs made it into MW4?), just the fact that BT over the years had so many different artists of different styles drawing (and 3D modeling) the same 'mechs different ways. I love what MWO has done with the mech designs as they feel like they're trying to be taken seriously (as serious as giant walking tanks can be taken anyway), and it's that sort of "ridiculous premise, but executed completely seriously" design style that I love in my sci-fi/fantasy. I still have nitpicks, but I think they've done an amazing job with things. And well...standardizing the art style, even though that has more to do with the fact that their mechs have been re-used in both Battletech and Mechwarrior 5 (it's weird to call it "standardizing" when it's just re-using the art).
MWO designs look really generic, it can blend in alot of sci-fi settings. It doesn't feel like piloting oversized killing metal boxes made to minimum requirements, it feels more like generic power armor. Of course some designs are goofy, that's part of the battletech style, and of course when you have hundreds of mechs not every one of them is going to be the pinnacle of design.
I never remembered mechs going so god damn fast in this game. A highlander sprinting at you with reckless abandon at 97kph will be haunting my nightmares tonight.
I remember Uziel was very strong cause it could shoot 2 blue lasers very fast. Blue lasers was my favorite weapon - it desables enemy systems and damage a lot
I very much enjoyed watching this. That is the only video game I ever really played enthusiastically, and it was good to see the Warhammer, Loki,Thor, Highlander, Cauldron Born, and Shadowhawk I loved so much. I missgood old NBT Sunder.
I mean, if we could have an open ended campaign in this game, I would basically drop MW5 altogether. This game just plays better. Aiming is harder, the movement is what I expect from a battlemech and it is just nice. This game gave me my undying love for the Bushwacker back in the day.
Its design always bothered me. Too boxy, always reminded me of a misshapen toaster. Also the cockpit seem for too big for its size but there are a lot that are like that in Mw4.
ah the Daisy, my old love :) back in early 2000's when we fought countless MW4 online battles, people loved to make her a deadly alpha sniper. My personal one was a direct opposite, a double strength large pulse lasers on each arm and a punishing dual AC cannons to finish the job. Face to face with sniper i would alternate fire from my pulse lasers to constantly shake their cockpits and mess with their aim so their sniper fire flys missing to my sideways while my cannons turn their reflective armor into popcorn. They hated my arse, haha xD
I never really did the table top stuff or read any of the novels I only ever played Vengeance and Mercenaries as well as mech assault on Xbox but imo they were awesome games.
Man, the fact that there are weapon pods that are separate from a hull section and can be shot off is both an extremely neat and painful mechanic. Such as the Uziel, have a PPC in the arm mounted weapon pod, well say good bye when a well placed ai shot manages to hit it.
you know what? The Vulture II was always my least favorite :/ Its not a bad mech but i can't help but only see a parody of the absolute flawless design of the Mechwarrior 4 Vulture when i look at it. I adore that mech but thats mainly because it was the featured mech in the opening video for Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance. It had such an impression on me at the time that nothing now will ever beat it in my eyes. One mech came close though, that was the Black Heart. I love that mech.

yea the whole battletech universe has mech weigth soo wrong in many levels. A regular tank in modern times can go up to 60 tons, and its barely the sieze of a foot of many assault mechs.
As I recall for the elementals, there were technical limitations of making them weigh what they should. As I recall it was attempted. (Also tried making them speedy bois able to run 80kph. It made them *terrifying*)
I'd play it even with the dated graphics because it's not about the graphics. It's about a time when the nerds, not the marketing/accounting department ran the show. It's about atmosphere, decent challenge, and character (cheesy voice acting helps!) that contributes to the overall fun.

I looked up all the weights on the wiki just to make sure I wasn't going crazy lol. The commando is 25 tons and last I checked a suit of power armor while heavy is no where comparable to a mech. Lol and then there is the infantry....
Attention fellow viewers, do not get fooled by the stated maximum speeds of those mechs. Those only apply if you put the biggest engine into ypour machine, which leaves you with almost no further abililty to put armr or weapons in/onto it.
My dude. Thats the point. Top speed, meaning the maximum amount of speed that machine is physically capable of. Everything else be dammed. For example, when people describe the top speed of a car, they aren't taking into account various things like the weight of potential cargo. If they were then i suppose thats what they'd call an average speed. But i didn't take the average, i took the top. As in the maximum amount of speed achievable.

Probably because the game engine doesn't allow for anything lower than 20 tons for anything that walks or runs because technically they count as mechs for gameplay purposes
Well Mech Warrior 5 mercenaries might be Sluggish a bit compare to the last games....well some but I still Like the game anyways. I mean first Battle Mech game to have an open end. You can still play for as long as you want

There is a hot fix. Check to see if moddb still has mechwarrior 4 on it. I sent the guy keeping the game updated the hot fix files years ago. Funny thing is that instead of re-uploading the files he linked directly to my drop box. It was downloaded so many times I got a permaban from them for not following the rules.
I hope in the future that they put it in the behemoth2 and mech warrior five mercenaries as a DLC pack just one robot the one I mentioned that thing looks like it's tough to crack
Where can you get high quality versions of the MW4 soundtrack? Everything I've found sounds like 96 kpbs but what you played in your video sounds near transparent.
Really? Huh, i'm not surprised honestly. Just getting this game to run alone is basically brain surgery, forget getting it to run perfectly. Although it sounds like your graphics were turned down. Try running the auto-config file and make sure everything is maxed out.
I just started playing this again, had to buy a 2nd hard drive and install winxp, but I got it running :) I just had to find video and audio drivers that work with xp

Its not in the original base game, but was added with the Mektek mods. I'm pretty sure the Mektek mechs start showing up in stores the same way the normal mechs do: Progress further into the game to see more mechs show up in the shop. Edit: From what I remember, the Mektek mod mechs are always listed below the list of original mechs in the shop. The Mektek ones do not show up in campaign missions and can only be bought.
I have downloaded the 3.1 vers; but it says I have Hardware/Driver issues and it refuses to load.. the 3.0 vers works fine.. but the problem is I want MekMatch... other wise I'd just play mw5...
Coldron Born is a Seleris 7 Special NPC, and he drives a Timberwolf. also the what you have listed as the Warlord is the Atlas 2, also a Stelaris 2 Special NPC.
@@jaximusprimerib34 yea there models are in game. BUT there not playable at all. the only time they spawn is in matchs at stelaris, where they are controlled by the computer, there is no way at all to get acess to those Mechs.

The Cauldron-Born (Ebony Jaguar) was a mech from the clan expansion pack that was released for MW4:Vengeance. You are correct, it did not appear in MW4: Mercs as a playable mech. The only time you see it in the game is during the opening video and in Solaris as an enemy as you said. What i am presenting here in this video is the Mektek modded version of the game. MW4:Mercs MekTek Mech Pack Version 3.1 to be exact. In this version of the game you have the ability to play not just the Cauldron-born but also all other mechs from the MW4:Vengeance expansion packs and more! It adds tons of content like maps and weapons. This version of the game is widely considered the final form of MW4. You should try it if you can find it and get it running. Hopefully that cleared up any confusion.

The mod makers weren't even the ones that decided to use that name. That name was assigned by the game creators for its release in the clan expansion pack for MW4 Vengeance

Ah, the Annihilator; rip out the AC/10s and replace them with RAC/5s and you're essentially four A10 Thunderbolts strapped together on legs.
Rip out AC/10 and replace with clan LBX20, and you will sweep the floor even with Atlas.

I managed to get this game working recently on windows 10. youll more than likely need Microsoft DirectPlay to play it. just google it, its very easy to enable in windows. i pre installed the game so all you need to do is drag-n-drop anywhere you like, and run it.
youll need to go into the rosters and delete my profile aswell, i was too lazy to remove it.
mektek packs installed too.
Played M/W 4 (not sure if it was the mercenary version) but the Thor with ACs, Gauss rifle, & some lasers worked for me! Thanks! Cool background music! Think I still have the game disks. Was there a feature of the game where you could choose a mech, & go up against a few different mechs?🤔

*20 tons!?!? Thats a heavy dude. I don't know why MekTek didn't just copy and paste the weight from the wiki.* I think it's possible because in NBT-HC the elemental weighs 5 tons
I looked up all the weights on the wiki just to make sure I wasn't going crazy lol. The commando is 25 tons and last I checked a suit of power armor while heavy is no where comparable to a mech. Lol and then there is the infantry....
I believe it's just the minimum weight the game engine would allow.

Attention fellow viewers, do not get fooled by the stated maximum speeds of those mechs. Those only apply if you put the biggest engine into ypour machine, which leaves you with almost no further abililty to put armr or weapons in/onto it.
My dude. Thats the point. Top speed, meaning the maximum amount of speed that machine is physically capable of. Everything else be dammed. For example, when people describe the top speed of a car, they aren't taking into account various things like the weight of potential cargo. If they were then i suppose thats what they'd call an average speed. But i didn't take the average, i took the top. As in the maximum amount of speed achievable.
If only there is a mod which let's you perform Melee Attack.

Probably because the game engine doesn't allow for anything lower than 20 tons for anything that walks or runs because technically they count as mechs for gameplay purposes
I miss this game so much. The current games may look pretty, but just don't compare.
Hope Mech5: Clans captures some of the feeling older titles had, especially since they're going for the linear story-telling style for the campaign.
And I hope they make an anniversary game that holds all Mech warrior games

I am pretty sure there was a hotfix released for it at some point. I am not sure where to find it though unfortunately as I've never bothered to fix it myself because fuck Katrina Steiner lol
There is a hot fix. Check to see if moddb still has mechwarrior 4 on it. I sent the guy keeping the game updated the hot fix files years ago.
Funny thing is that instead of re-uploading the files he linked directly to my drop box.
It was downloaded so many times I got a permaban from them for not following the rules.

Basically I can play mix and match all mech in 1 match. Like Catapult (one with Missile) partner with Katapult (one with Cannon/Laser). Am I right?
Where can you get high quality versions of the MW4 soundtrack? Everything I've found sounds like 96 kpbs but what you played in your video sounds near transparent.

Really? Huh, i'm not surprised honestly. Just getting this game to run alone is basically brain surgery, forget getting it to run perfectly. Although it sounds like your graphics were turned down. Try running the auto-config file and make sure everything is maxed out.

I just started playing this again, had to buy a 2nd hard drive and install winxp, but I got it running :) I just had to find video and audio drivers that work with xp
That's definitely the most reliable way to do it. I wish I can get mine to run with a joystick but it won't launch with the /nosjoystick exception

it's probably impossible, but don't stop trying. I'm sure somebody has figured it out. I got this from windows 10 but I couldn't actually play it. Last time i was able was on windows 7

Its not in the original base game, but was added with the Mektek mods. I'm pretty sure the Mektek mechs start showing up in stores the same way the normal mechs do: Progress further into the game to see more mechs show up in the shop.
Edit: From what I remember, the Mektek mod mechs are always listed below the list of original mechs in the shop. The Mektek ones do not show up in campaign missions and can only be bought.

I have downloaded the 3.1 vers; but it says I have Hardware/Driver issues and it refuses to load.. the 3.0 vers works fine.. but the problem is I want MekMatch... other wise I'd just play mw5...
the problems with that game are endless, it takes a lot of tweaking to get it to work on modern systems, can be done though.
Coldron Born is a Seleris 7 Special NPC, and he drives a Timberwolf.
also the what you have listed as the Warlord is the Atlas 2, also a Stelaris 2 Special NPC.
All names and data are taken directly from the game. whether or not they are canonical is another story hence the disclaimer at the beginning.
@@jaximusprimerib34 yea there models are in game. BUT there not playable at all. the only time they spawn is in matchs at stelaris, where they are controlled by the computer, there is no way at all to get acess to those Mechs.

The Cauldron-Born (Ebony Jaguar) was a mech from the clan expansion pack that was released for MW4:Vengeance. You are correct, it did not appear in MW4: Mercs as a playable mech. The only time you see it in the game is during the opening video and in Solaris as an enemy as you said. What i am presenting here in this video is the Mektek modded version of the game. MW4:Mercs MekTek Mech Pack Version 3.1 to be exact. In this version of the game you have the ability to play not just the Cauldron-born but also all other mechs from the MW4:Vengeance expansion packs and more! It adds tons of content like maps and weapons. This version of the game is widely considered the final form of MW4. You should try it if you can find it and get it running. Hopefully that cleared up any confusion.

infact its noted that if you try and build it it with what its discribed as having in book, it ends up 20t over mass, even with clan tec.

So its not an Easter egg. The mod makers weren't even the ones that decided to use that name. That name was assigned by the game creators for its release in the clan expansion pack for MW4 Vengeance
