The way Denzel strung you along Nia was exciting to watch, lol. You were in disbelief, denial, all of the emotions. Haha, it’s always interesting to watch others view this one for the first time. It doesn’t really click until the end for most. Most just think all of Alonzo’s actions are justified. Such a phenomenal film from all, however Denzel did this thing. Mission passed. Although the movie wasn’t based on a true story Denzel’s character was loosely based on an actual corrupt LAPD cop named Rafael Perez. Perez was involved in a huge corruption scandal back in the day and was one of the cops implicated in Notorious B.I.G.s murd€r, almost twenty years ago. Keep up the good work.

Exactly! This film makes you ask yourself what exactly are the limits of this job and what do you truly consider protecting & serving? What is the difference between a punishment & a power trip for a cop & does the difference even matter to you as long as you aren’t on the recieving end? When is a cop allowed to be ruthlessly violent & who are they allowed to be ruthless to? For me personally harshing the trio in the Beetle at the beginning was enough for me to call out Alonzo but for so many people the fact that they were involved in drugs at all makes them feel Alonzo was justified in his actions. Hell, some people come away thinking that Alonzo didn’t go far enough. And yet that’s also right before Alonzo forced Hoyt to use what they just confiscated anyway with a slightly more intimidating form of peer pressure & coercion that might have led those people to the drugs. So is Alonzo better than a drug dealer because he wears a badge & dealing isn’t his full time job, or is he just as bad as them despite his “this is the way Narcotics is” justifications? Creating that kind of stark self reflection is the brilliance of this film.
I wonder how many ask the question that what does the badge even mean? This movie adds another layer to Nicholson's words in "the departed": cop or criminal, when you are faced with a loaded gun, what's the difference?
Denzel was so good in this that I was already sus in that first scene in the coffee shop. As soon as they made the first stop with the college kids I was certain he was worse than any other criminal we were going to see in the movie.

Director Antoine Fuqua works really well with Denzel. After Training Day, they would work together again on The Magnificent 7 remake (also with Hawke) and the Equalizer series. While he started as a knock-off John Woo (his first movie Replacement Killers is still pretty good though) Training Day really put Fuqua on the radar for a lot of people. It's slick, stylish, and he directs the heck out of a stellar cast. He has a few stumbles (see what you think of King Arthur 2004) but I think he's a very solid director usually.

Every time Jake starts to come to his senses, Alonzo reassures him what’s going on is ok and it’s “part of the process”. As I’ve gotten older and watched this movie more I’m seeing the true meaning of it, especially having friends who’ve been in these types of relationships. It’s damn near a snapshot of America in 2024

This film is somewhat realistic, a bit of Hollywood scripting but undercover detectives do have to similar things to this to catch drug lords, criminals etc.
An amazing film with an incredible performance by Denzel. It was interesting seeing Nia try and make sense of the film, when I like to simply sum it up. It was a criminal with a badge. To me, it's that simple.

The good old golden days of cinema. Today, we don't see such perfect raw drama anymore. Denzel and Hawke drew me right into the screen. When I saw it as a teenager. Back then, films were made with the heart and not for monetary gain.
Movies these days aren't nearly as compelling and well written as this movie, but there are some diamonds here and there. "The Passenger" is one that came out last year(2023) that has a very similar premise of something dark happening over the course of a day. It's definitely worth checking out sometime. It stars Kyle Gallner, who for years has been sort of floating around Hollywood doing small films like that one. He's recently started making a name for himself showing up in stuff like "Dinner in America" and "Strange Darling". Both fantastic movies as well.
A lot of great villain actors are nice people, but most nice actors can't do villain. Denzel can't do villain. I don't buy it. He's doing a fine technical job, but I can see the actor past the acting. I don't believe he'd be doing these things. The audience is aware the whole time that this is just a movie. Ethan Hawke too for that matter. Good job on the technical acting, but I don't buy him as a cop. At all. The actor is visible.
One of the things that makes no sense in this move is when the duo roll up on Snoop on the street, and asks him for crack, Snoop says smells like bacon. They go after him and all of a sudden Snoop knows Lonzo and Lonzo knows all about his record of past crimes. Theres no way he didnt recognize him in the car.
