This traditional dish, originating from Northern Vietnam, is a staple and a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Bánh Cuốn, which translates to "rolled cake," is made from a thin, steamed rice flour batter filled with a variety of delectable ingredients.
The preparation of Bánh Cuốn is an art. Rice flour is mixed with water to create a liquid batter, which is then poured onto a steaming cloth stretched over a pot of boiling water. As the batter cooks, it forms a thin, delicate sheet of rice noodle. The skill lies in the cooks ability to spread the batter evenly and quickly, ensuring the perfect texture and thickness of the rice noodle.
Once cooked, the rice noodle is carefully lifted off the cloth with chop sticks and placed onto a plate. It is then filled with a savory mixture, typically consisting of ground pork, wood ear mushrooms, and fried shallots. The rice noodle is rolled up, encasing the filling, and served hot with a side of tangy fish sauce for dipping and cinnamon pork sausage.
While Bánh Cuốn is very popular throughout Vietnam but it is particularly famous in Hanoi, where it is believed to have originated. Local street vendors and family-run establishments diligently prepare this traditional dish, preserving its cultural significance and time-honored recipes.

Bánh cuốn is my favorite Vietnamese dish. I miss it. I am Vietnamese who lives in Canada since last 30 years and there is no good Viet.restaurants in my city.
BTw, Vietnamese do take siesta at noon to 2pm.

You should enjoy local and heirloom dishes, it's more delicious than in big restaurants, although it's not as meticulous and thoughtful as the restaurant but it's very delicious, thank you for visiting Vietnam. I subscribed to the channel

What you called big cakes (brown discs) were not cakes but in fact the cinnamon pork sausages that they would cut in pieces and to be served with Banh Cuon (same as what you ate before in the Banh Cuon shop :)

If you find the fish sauce that comes with Banh Cuon or any other dish too harsh or too salty, ask them for some sugar to put in the fish sauce. It makes the Banh Cuon and other dishes so much tastier

I just returned home from a holiday in Vietnam! I found your videos when I was away and travelling solo. I love your tips and as a fellow basket lover I love your style of market shopping. Mong bà con cô bác mình giữ đúng hương vị món ăn, ví như Bún Riêu cua thì giữ đúng hương vị truyền thống, ko thêm thịt bò, vịt lộn... cho những thứ đấy nó phá vỡ hương vị của Riêu cua, lúc đấy ko còn là Bún Riêu nữa. 😊
