- Guitar cover of Spirits Away by Erra. Probably the hardest song I've covered, and also the most fun song. I'm playing with 13-59 D'addario strings. The palm mutes from 3:20 - 3:35 were an absolute bitch to get down! Tuning is in A# - Hope you enjoy!

Uhh no amp! Just a pedal that recorded to my PC edit: I should say I did have an amp but it played no effect on my recorded sound
you have any tips on playing this style of music?
I do. This style of music consists of mostly intricate rhythms and complex melodies. To get good at playing this style, not only will you have to practice a few things but you'll have to FEEL the music as well. One thing you should practice is fast rhythms. Try doing things like doubles, triplets, and quads which is when you strum one string or chord really fast either 2, 3, or 4 times, and make sure you're alternate picking when you do this (which is strumming up and down). Only doing down strums gives it a different sound but it will also slow you down, so only do it if you are trying to get the down strum sound for your rhythm. Also try alternating between palm mute and no palm mute at the right times to give your rhythm the sound you're looking for. As for the melodies, you should practice things like hammer-ons, pull-offs, sweep picking, and speed picking. These techniques are used for fast playing which is heavily incorporated in this style, and if you don't know what any of those techniques are, then just look them up. By the way, you don't have to play fast to make good metal music and some bands play fast and still suck. So remember, playing fast isn't everything, but if you can do it right, then you can make some damn good music. The final step is just practice A LOT! You can just practice the techniques by themselves but I would recommend learning and practicing songs that play the type of style you're look for because they probably use the techniques I've mentioned in their songs. Also, you could always just write your own songs. A good first step in learning how to write your own music is learning some chords and some musical scales to play in, and I'm sure you can learn some on the internet. Trying looking up the "Movable Major Scale", which is what a lot of music is written in. I hope this comment helped and if not then..... well, shit, sorry.

brad dyess Mine is pretty ghetto as well man. I just have a effect pedal with a usb port. I record direct to my computer. I have it for so long I've been able to tweak it and get it to sound pretty decent. All my gear is on my page man! But if you have any other questions, just let me know.

hey how long did it take you to learn 1:30-2:00? I cant seem to play it to save my life haha
From what I remember, the entirety of the song took me a week to learn and film this video.
Most of the covers I've done I can learn in one day, but then I usually spend the rest of the week perfecting.

Wait, are you saying it takes you about a day, to listen to the song, and figure out what they are playing, and learn it? Or tabs?
