As a blind person with almost no vision at all outside a little light perception in one eye, this is actually a pretty interesting video to watch. I play video games with varying degrees of success. It makes me wonder what ways FF9 could be modded to make it playable by a blind person. For one I'm curious, if your character hits a wall or object of some sort, does the sound of your movement stop? Some games do this, some don't. While it's far from a perfect system, Final Fantasy 16 is also another one I've had at least some success with, mostly due to the animal instinct feature that points your camera in the general direction of your objective marker. Between that and a few other tools I have at my disposal, I've managed to make it about a third of the way through the game with no help. I haven't played in a while though, mostly due to frustration points. I've heard some other people have had varying results with other FF games, though honestly I haven't really played a ton of them myself.
I'm sorry if it's a rude question sir or ma'am, I'm just tremendously curious because you said 'almost no vision'. When you found the video, is there a way you can please explain to me how much of it you could see? Ty for your understanding.
@@DiegoSouto-fy9suin case they dont respond, I think they can just detect light, but not conturs or objects, just binary basically, probably a little bit more, that's my interpretation
@@S4NSE Ah I see, got it wrong then. But the way it was phrased, sounded real curious, I was wracking my brain trying to figure out how that worked. Anyway, ty.
@@DiegoSouto-fy9su Hey of course! :) So I could see none of the video. Literally all I can see is light. So say... if there's a bright enough light in a room, or the sun if it's bright enough, stuff like that. I can't make out any shapes, shadows etc.
A fun bit of background trivia about Broodles freaking out during that Deathguise fight in the intro. That run had an incentive to do Necron blindfolded, and Freya's trance bar was very close to full, so there was a high chance that he would have to deal with it on the Necron fight, just like in his full run as explained in the video. So getting it out of the way beforehand, which was looking unlikely at that point, made him very happy. :)
The sensory deprivation issue TheBroodles would've encountered is a common issue amongst blind people called Non-24. Your cycadean rhythm is telling your body it's night time after a few hours because the lack of light penetration for your eye balls. Tricking your brain into thinking it's time to sleep, or you're attempting to sleep but your brain won't shut off. Good on him for knowing when he needed breaks and over coming 2 challenges at once
Everything Final Fantasy speedrun or challenge run related always blows my mind. I'm a completionist, so whenever I play or replay these games, something in me just compels me to look at every nook and cranny and take my time, I simply can't conceive there are people out there doing the exact opposite with absurd precision after a ton of work. Great video.
Oh yeah, it's crazy. I remember finding a video a couple years ago about someone who went to extreme lengths to beat Pokemon Fire Red from the perspective of someone blind and deaf. Like... to the point where they had memorised the exact number of button presses they'd need, to account for all the RNG possibilities that Pokemon games typically have. Video below: ua-cam.com/video/6gjsAA_5Agk/v-deo.html
Never let a disability stop you from achieving what you want. For example, this man has a crippling gaming addiction and he still managed to achieve a world record. We can all take inspiration from this guy's determination.
This has been my favorite game for almost 2 and a half decades now, finished it dozens of times, and have still never gotten excalibur, and this dude did it blindfolded...
I know muttski did a run on ddr mat but this is something else. I remember that incentive that luz did at gdq, just that was insane, let alone the entire game.
This kind of challenge would almost certainly be impossible to do with the Dynamic battle mode that comes with the PC version... with the moguri mod used as well? I'm not sure honestly if it's from the rerelease getting new features or if moguri mod adds it. But it would make a blind run impossible likely. 1. It keeps the active battle mode in that time is always progressing except in certain menus in battle. 2. Enemies and allies can take actions at any point so long as their atb meter is full. This means you can stack attacks. Makes eating enemies for blu magic super easy for quina, since you can use eat while another character yeets the enemies health. Works even when they KO. 3. There can be some other interesting effects that occur as well. Like with the move chestnut that the mandragoras use. It normally does 0 damage unless they have been harmed. They also have about 660 or so HP. What can end up happening is they use their chestnut move at the same time as you hitting them. So you hit them, maybe even with a stacked attack, but they still get to use their move they started. So the math flips, and they suddenly are using a 100% power chestnut. Say good bye to your character it targetted. This can also work in reverse with Quina via pumpkin head if I understand the mechanic correctly. Granted, this is no longer a vanilla game at that point. But the mode is quite interesting to play the game with, because it really changes up how the battles can go down. You can be doing great, then suddenly get a really bad luck kind of result because of timing. Skill in the game gets tested a lot in this sense, because you need to understand just what is going on at any given moment to best utilize the timing of dynamic to turn the tables back in your favor again. I learned this all the hard way you could say... grinding levels with low level characters using mandragora's disgusting amount of EXP they give when you beat them solo. 2 mandragora battles can take out a 4 person team if you aren't careful. 3 mandragoras can really do it really fast if you really aren't careful. They switch between 3 attacks. One silences, the other already mentioned, and blizzard. Blizzard isn't a huge problem on its own, but because of that stacking effect again... well... Zidane and Steiner hit a mandragora. That mandragora was using chestnut. Chestnut hits Zidane for 100% hp damage done to the mandragora. Zidane is down to yellow hp range. 2nd mandragora is using blizzard. It also hits Zidane, because protect girls causes him to intercept the attack going to Garnet/Dagger at that point usually. Zidane is now KO. 3rd mandragora starts it silence attack a moment later. This hits Garnet instead of Zidane, because he's already out of action in the battles timeline. Garnet can not heal or revive now without using an echo screen on herself or having someone else use it. Pheonix downs only revive a few hp. So you get Garnet to use a pheonix down while Steiner is recovering his atb. Quina let's say is the 4th this time, uses a high potion on Zidane to get him back to half health at least. Steiner follows up with an echo screen to undo silence on Garnet. Zidane is recovering. 2 mandragoras remain. Those 2 decide to use blizzard, both hitting Garnet. Garnet is down or near KO. Zidane and Steiner save their ATB to hit the next mandragora combined before it can attack again. They tend to swap back and forth between chestnut, and then either silence or blizzard. Almost always back and forth like this. So it's a bit of a gamble. This time it's a good gamble. That mandragora is down, but it's friend finished off Garnet. Oh no, you forgot to buy more potions and phoenix downs. Quina hits the mandragora, because why not. Last one right? Uh oh, it didn't KO. Now it's using chestnut and no one can attack or defend. Down goes Quina. 2 characters remain. Zidane and Steiner go in for the final hits. They both miss. Steiner takes a chestnut to the face. Steiner is down. Zidane goes for the final hit, but both of the atb's for zidane and the Mandragora are in sync right now. But wait, they usually just go back and forth you said, right? Well, yeah, they usually do. But they are also programmed to use chestnut more often when they are hurt, it seems. ( I don't know from looking at data, just from experience so far. ) Zidane hits, but isn't at full health. Mandragora ko's, but sends off another chestnut as well. Zidane KO's as well. Game over. I've had a very similar battle to this one before. It was jaw dropping at how unfair it seemed, until I thought about it and went "That was my bad." In a normal game of FFIX, something like this is almost impossible to have happen, not just because of the turn based nature of it all, but because the battle mode makes it nearly impossible to lose if you aren't an idiot. But dynamic takes that and tosses it aside and says "good luck". Blind attempts with Dynamic will never be successful. Any that attempt it, will be cheating somehow.
I remember watching Luz doing the menu blindfolded, and it was ridiculous to watch (though not as ridiculous as the aftermath of the run). But doing this ENTIRE game blindfolded? Just wow
